A Day of Fire and Earth

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through Iceland’s raw volcanic landscapes punctuated by moments of culinary warmth. Pieter and I set out early, eager to explore more of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula's dramatic scenery. Little did we know that the day would be a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

Our first stop was Stapinn for breakfast. It’s a family-run restaurant in Arnarstapi, and I must say that it was a great decision to start our day here. The atmosphere was so welcoming, and the food was delicious. I had some freshly baked pastries with a cup of coffee, while Pieter opted for a traditional Icelandic breakfast. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we headed towards Berserkjahraun, a 4,000-year-old lava field that promised a landscape unlike any other. The drive itself was stunning, with the road winding through rolling hills and past quaint Icelandic farms. As we approached Berserkjahraun, the landscape transformed dramatically.

The lava field stretched out before us, a vast expanse of jagged, moss-covered rocks. The contrast between the bright green moss and the dark, volcanic rock was striking, creating a surreal and almost otherworldly scene. It felt like stepping onto another planet. Pieter, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping away at the unique formations and textures. I, on the other hand, was captivated by the sheer scale and rawness of the landscape. We wandered through the field, marveling at nature's artistry and imagining the volcanic forces that had shaped this place millennia ago. The air was crisp and clean, carrying with it the scent of the sea and the earth. It was so quiet and peaceful.

As we explored, I couldn't help but think about the saga connected to Berserkjahraun. The story of the two berserkers tasked with clearing a path through the lava field is a testament to human strength and determination, but also to the darker side of human nature. It added another layer of depth to the experience, making the landscape feel even more ancient and mysterious. According to the Eyrbyggja Saga, a farmer made a deal with two Swedish berserkers: their reward for clearing a path through the rugged lava field would be the hand of his daughter in marriage. But instead, they met a treacherous end. It's a chilling tale that resonates even today, adding a layer of intrigue to the already dramatic landscape.

After spending a few hours exploring Berserkjahraun, we decided to move on to our next destination: Eldborg Crater Trailhead. The drive was relatively short, but the anticipation was building. I had read about Eldborg Crater, a perfectly formed volcanic crater that rises dramatically from the surrounding landscape. The hike to the crater was described as moderate, and I was a little nervous, given my recent bout of illness. But Pieter, ever the encouraging partner, assured me that we could take it at our own pace.

The trail began at Snorrastaðir farm, a charming Icelandic farmstead that seemed to have been plucked straight from a postcard. From there, the path led us through a lava field, but this one was different from Berserkjahraun. It was covered in low-lying shrubs and wildflowers, adding a touch of color and vibrancy to the landscape. The trail was rocky and uneven, but the views were worth every step. As we climbed higher, we could see the crater looming in the distance, its perfectly symmetrical shape standing out against the horizon.

The final ascent to the crater rim was steep and challenging, but there were chains in place to help hikers along. I was grateful for the extra support, as my legs were starting to feel the burn. But finally, we reached the top, and the view was simply breathtaking. The crater stretched out before us, a massive bowl of volcanic rock and ash. The walls were steep and imposing, and the bottom of the crater was a dark, mysterious abyss. It was hard to believe that this was the site of a violent volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. Today, it was a place of peace and tranquility, a testament to the healing power of nature.

We spent some time walking around the crater rim, taking in the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. We could see the Snæfellsjökull glacier in the distance, its icy peak shimmering in the sun. It was a truly unforgettable sight, and I felt a sense of accomplishment for having made it to the top.

By this time, we were both starting to feel hungry, so we decided to head to Grundarfjörður for lunch. We had heard about Mæstro - Street food, a popular food truck that served delicious Icelandic hot dogs. As a Sustainability Consultant, I am always keen on supporting local businesses that offer authentic food. We found the food truck near the harbor and ordered two lamb hot dogs with all the fixings. They were absolutely delicious, the perfect combination of savory and sweet. We sat at a picnic table by the harbor, enjoying our lunch and watching the boats bobbing in the water. It was a simple but perfect moment, a reminder of the joys of travel and the pleasure of discovering new flavors.

Our next stop was a bit of a detour, but one that I had been looking forward to all day. We drove to RJÚK ANDI, a small shop that I had read about online. RJÚK ANDI is known for selling a variety of unique and handcrafted items. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of colorful, locally made goods. I was immediately drawn to a display of hand-knitted sweaters, each one unique and beautiful. I ended up buying a cozy wool sweater for myself, a perfect souvenir of our trip to Iceland.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made one last stop at the Lava Rocks Formations along Snæfellsvegur. These formations, sculpted by centuries of volcanic activity and erosion, presented an otherworldly landscape that was truly captivating. The intricate shapes and patterns in the rocks told a story of the Earth's fiery past, and I felt a sense of awe and wonder as I wandered through the terrain.

Finally, as the day drew to a close, we drove to Arnarbær for dinner. Located next to the camping site, this restaurant is known for its local Icelandic cuisine and seafood. We both opted for seafood dishes, eager to taste the flavors of the Icelandic coast. The food was delicious, fresh, and flavorful, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am struck by the incredible diversity of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. From the raw volcanic landscapes of Berserkjahraun and Eldborg Crater to the charming villages and delicious cuisine, there is something for everyone here. It's a place that challenges and inspires, a place that stays with you long after you've left.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Sönghellir Cave, Súgandisey Island Lighthouse, and Helgafell. It sounds like another day full of exciting discoveries, and I can't wait to share it with you all. And perhaps we'll cap it off with a visit to Hvanneyri Pub for a taste of local nightlife!
