Stepping Back in Time in Kyoto

Today was a day of pure magic, the kind where you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Kyoto has a way of doing that, doesn't it? It's not just about seeing the sights; it's about feeling the history, breathing in the culture, and letting the city whisper its secrets. Join me as I recount our adventures exploring ancient temples, charming streets, and the vibrant heart of Kyoto.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. It was a delightful start, fueling us up for a day of exploration. The restaurant had a cozy, local vibe, and the traditional Japanese breakfast set the perfect tone for the day. Pieter and I shared stories about our plans, excited about seeing Kiyomizu-dera. It’s funny, even after all our travels, the anticipation of discovering something new never fades.

From there, we made our way to the iconic Kiyomizu-dera. The temple is nestled in the hills east of Kyoto and founded in 780, deriving its name from the pure waters of the Otowa Waterfall. The approach to the temple was an experience in itself. The lanes of the Higashiyama District were bustling with activity, a vibrant mix of tourists and locals alike. Shops lined the streets, selling everything from traditional pottery to sweets and pickles. It was tempting to stop at every single one, but we were on a mission to reach the temple.

As we ascended, the anticipation grew. The temple's entrance was marked by a monumental red and white Niomon Gate, flanked by imposing statues of Buddhist guardian kings. The intricate details and vibrant colors were a feast for the eyes. Passing through the gate, we entered a different world, a realm of ancient history and spiritual significance.

Kiyomizu-dera is renowned for its wooden stage that juts out from the main hall, thirteen meters above the hillside. Stepping onto the stage, I was immediately struck by the panoramic view of Kyoto. The city stretched out before us, a tapestry of traditional buildings and modern skyscrapers, framed by the surrounding hills. It was breathtaking. I could see why this spot is so famous, especially during the cherry blossom season. I could only imagine the sea of pink blossoms that would erupt here in just a few days.

The main hall, constructed without the use of nails, houses a small statue of the eleven-faced, thousand-armed Kannon, the temple's primary object of worship. It's a humbling experience to stand in the presence of such an ancient and revered artifact. The air was thick with incense, and the murmur of prayers created a serene atmosphere. It was a moment of quiet reflection amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

Visiting Kiyomizu-dera is more than just seeing a temple; it's about feeling the pulse of Kyoto's history and spirituality, a reminder of the enduring beauty and resilience of Japanese culture.

Behind the main hall, we discovered Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. It was amusing to watch people, especially young couples, trying their luck at the love stones. The legend says that if you can walk from one stone to the other with your eyes closed, you will find true love. Some made it look easy, while others stumbled and laughed, adding to the lighthearted atmosphere.

As we explored the temple grounds, we came across the Otowa Waterfall, located at the base of Kiyomizu-dera's main hall. The waters are divided into three separate streams, and visitors use cups attached to long poles to drink from them. Each stream is said to have a different benefit: longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life. We opted for longevity, hoping to have many more adventures together.

Leaving Kiyomizu-dera, we descended into the charming streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. These narrow, sloping lanes are lined with traditional wooden buildings, housing craft shops, teahouses, and restaurants. It was like stepping back in time, a glimpse into old Kyoto. The streets were bustling with people, but the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting.

Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka are more than just pretty streets; they are a living testament to Kyoto's rich history and cultural heritage. The traditional wooden buildings, the cobblestone pathways, and the absence of modern distractions all contribute to a unique and immersive experience. It’s a place where you can slow down, appreciate the beauty of simplicity, and connect with the past.

We wandered through the streets, browsing the shops and admiring the traditional crafts. There were pottery shops, selling delicate teacups and vases, sweet shops offering matcha-flavored treats, and souvenir shops filled with colorful trinkets. I picked up a small, hand-painted fan as a memento of our visit. Pieter found a beautiful calligraphy set, a nod to his interest in Japanese art. It's these little things that make our travels so special, the chance to discover unique treasures and bring a piece of the destination back home with us.

Legend has it that if you fall on Sannenzaka, you will die within three years, and if you fall on Ninenzaka, you will die within two. We made sure to tread carefully, not wanting to tempt fate. The streets were indeed a bit slippery, especially in our walking shoes, so we took our time, enjoying the scenery and the atmosphere.

For lunch, we stopped at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi, a restaurant that came highly recommended. The reviews didn't lie. We enjoyed the meal in Kiyamachi-dori along the Takase River. The relaxed atmosphere was perfect for a midday break. All the seats were at the counter, and we had a great view of the chef's cooking techniques. The food was delicious, and the service was attentive. It was a memorable dining experience that added to the day's enjoyment.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at Bar Fishbowl. It was a quirky little spot with a unique atmosphere. The bar had a fishbowl theme, with aquariums and marine decor creating a whimsical ambiance. They had a wide selection of Japanese whiskeys and craft beers, and we sampled a few, enjoying the laid-back vibe. Pieter, ever the beer enthusiast, was in his element, trying different local brews and chatting with the bartender about the intricacies of Japanese brewing.

For dinner, we chose Chihana, drawn in by its reputation for exquisite Japanese cuisine. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a serene atmosphere that invited relaxation. The chefs and waitresses were incredibly attentive, making us feel welcome and cared for. The food was a work of art, each dish a delicate balance of flavors and textures. From the sashimi to the grilled mackerel, every bite was a culinary delight.

The service was exceptional, even by Japanese standards. The chefs and waitresses paid great attention to us and came across as genuinely enthusiastic about the food. We felt incredibly welcome and enjoyed the experience immensely. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

The evening in Kyoto was calm, but I did notice that the Kyoto Kimono Trunk Show was on today. It sounded very interesting, but maybe I will visit it tomorrow before we head out to our next destination.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Heian Shrine, Philosopher's Path and Nanzen-ji Temple. I am especially looking forward to the Philosopher's Path, because I heard that it will be beautiful at this time of the year!
