Arrival in Zao Onsen: A Promising Start
After a long journey from Delft, involving a flight to Tokyo and a scenic train and bus ride to Yamagata, Pieter and I finally arrived in Zao Onsen. The anticipation had been building for months, and I couldn't wait to immerse myself in the beauty and tranquility this onsen town promised. Even though I realized I forgot the sunscreen, I was still excited to start exploring!
The bus dropped us off near the center of town, and the first thing that struck me was the fresh, clean mountain air. It was a welcome change from the city, and I could already feel my shoulders relaxing. The temperature was pleasant, around 27°C, perfect for a bit of summer exploration despite the chance of rain. We easily found our way to Omiya Ryokan, our home for the next ten nights. The ryokan looked even more inviting than the pictures online, with its traditional architecture and serene garden.

Checking in was a breeze, and the staff was incredibly welcoming, offering us tea and explaining the amenities. Our room was a beautiful blend of traditional and modern, with tatami mats, comfortable futon beds, and a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. Pieter was particularly impressed with the massage chairs available in the public area.
After settling in, we decided to take a stroll through the town. Zao Onsen is compact and easily walkable, with charming streets lined with souvenir shops, restaurants, and traditional buildings. The atmosphere was peaceful and inviting, and I immediately felt a sense of calm wash over me. It's exactly the kind of escape Pieter and I needed.

A Culinary Introduction
Our first culinary experience was at Tomitaya for lunch. This restaurant came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. We both opted for their famous soba noodles, which were freshly made and incredibly flavorful. The broth was light yet rich, and the noodles had the perfect texture. It was a delightful introduction to the local cuisine, and I knew we were in for a treat throughout our stay.

Later in the afternoon, we explored some of the local shops. Zao Souvenir Center Marushichi caught my eye with its array of local crafts and delicacies. I picked up a few small gifts for friends back home, including some of their popular cherry jam. Pieter, of course, was drawn to the selection of local sake, and we purchased a bottle to enjoy later in our room.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand gestures, but in the simple act of immersing oneself in a new culture, one small, delightful experience at a time.
For dinner, we chose Zaonoie, a local ramen restaurant. The ramen was hearty and comforting, perfect for a cool evening in the mountains. The broth was rich and savory, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. It was a satisfying end to our first day in Zao Onsen.

Exploring Zao Onsen: First Impressions
As we wandered through the town, I couldn't help but notice the prevalence of onsen-related paraphernalia. Steam rose from various points, hinting at the therapeutic waters beneath the surface. I learned that Zao Onsen's hot springs are renowned for their high acidity and mineral content, believed to heal skin conditions and gastrointestinal disorders. While I don't have any specific ailments, I was definitely looking forward to experiencing the rejuvenating effects myself!
The town itself has a charming, rustic feel. Many of the buildings are traditional Japanese style, with wooden facades and tiled roofs. Narrow streets wind through the town, leading to hidden shops and restaurants. I appreciated the lack of large chain stores; Zao Onsen felt authentic and unique.
One thing that struck me was the number of kokeshi dolls available in the souvenir shops. These traditional wooden dolls are a local specialty, and I found myself drawn to their simple yet elegant design. I learned that they are often given as gifts to symbolize friendship and good luck.
Omiya Ryokan: A Haven of Tranquility
Returning to Omiya Ryokan after dinner, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. The ryokan truly felt like a haven, a place where I could relax and recharge. We decided to take advantage of the onsen facilities before bed. The hot spring bath was exactly what my tired muscles needed after a day of travel and exploration. The water was hot and slightly sulfuric, and I could feel my skin tingling as I soaked. Pieter enjoyed the massage chair after the bath.
Afterward, we donned our yukatas (light cotton kimonos) and relaxed in our room, sipping on the local sake we had purchased earlier. The sake was smooth and flavorful, a perfect complement to the peaceful atmosphere. We chatted about our first impressions of Zao Onsen, both agreeing that it had exceeded our expectations.
As I lay in my futon, listening to the gentle sounds of the night, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to escape and immerse myself in Japanese culture. Zao Onsen had already captivated me with its beauty, charm, and tranquility, and I knew that the next ten days would be filled with unforgettable experiences.
Looking Ahead: Tomorrow's Adventures
Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Zao Onsen. We're particularly excited about visiting the Zao Onsen Dairotenburo, a large outdoor hot spring bath. I've heard it's a truly unique experience, surrounded by nature. We also plan to hike to Dokko Marsh, a scenic spot known for its natural beauty. And in the evening, we're looking forward to trying some local craft beer at Zao Brewery.
I'm also keen to visit Sukawa Onsen Shrine, one of the historical centerpieces of Zao Onsen. It’s said to have been founded around 834-847 and has a fascinating history. It will be interesting to learn more about the local history and traditions.
As I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation for the days ahead. Zao Onsen has already proven to be a special place, and I can't wait to discover all that it has to offer. Good night from Zao Onsen!
