A Day of Awe and Art in Zao Onsen
Today was nothing short of spectacular, a perfect blend of natural wonders and delightful cultural experiences. Pieter and I set out early, eager to explore the famed landscapes of Zao Onsen. It's days like these that remind me why I love travel so much—the sheer joy of discovery and the chance to immerse myself in something completely different. As a sustainability consultant, I'm always looking for ways to appreciate and protect our planet, and today was a beautiful reminder of what's worth preserving.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Omiya Ryokan, fueling up for our mountain adventure [itinerary]. The traditional Japanese spread was both delicious and nourishing, providing the perfect start to what promised to be an unforgettable day. I made sure to pack my reusable water bottle, ever mindful of minimizing our environmental footprint. It’s a small thing, but every little bit counts, right?

Journey to Okama Crater
The highlight of the morning was undoubtedly our visit to Okama Crater, also known as the 'Five-Color Pond'. The journey itself was an adventure, involving a scenic bus ride and a thrilling ropeway ascent to Jizo Sancho Station. As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly breathtaking, with lush greenery stretching as far as the eye could see. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty. I made a mental note to research more about the local flora and fauna; understanding the ecosystem is crucial for responsible tourism.

At Jizo Sancho Station, we paused to take in the panoramic views and appreciate the Zao natural botanical garden. The alpine plants, thriving in the cool mountain air, were a testament to nature's resilience. Pieter, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the mechanics of the ropeway, while I was captivated by the delicate balance of the ecosystem. We even spotted a few hikers preparing for their trek, their faces filled with anticipation.

The walk from Jizo Sancho Station to Okama Crater was invigorating. The air was crisp and clean, and the scenery was simply stunning. And then, there it was – Okama Crater, a mesmerizing sight to behold. The crater lake, nestled between Mount Katta, Mount Goshiki and Mount Kumano, shimmered with an ethereal green hue, its color changing with the shifting sunlight. I learned that the lake is about 1,080 meters in circumference and 27 meters deep.
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
The sheer scale of the crater, combined with the serene beauty of the lake, was truly awe-inspiring. We spent a good hour simply soaking in the views, snapping photos, and marveling at the forces of nature that had created this magnificent landscape. I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of preserving such places for future generations. It’s not just about the views; it’s about protecting the delicate balance of these ecosystems.
A Sushi Revelation at Sushi Kiraku
After our mountain adventure, we descended back to Zao Onsen, our stomachs rumbling with anticipation for lunch. Today's culinary destination was Sushi Kiraku, a local gem known for its fresh, high-quality sushi. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the town, the restaurant exuded a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

We settled in at the counter, chatting with the friendly chef as he expertly crafted each piece. The sushi was divine, the fish melting in our mouths with a burst of flavor. Pieter, who usually prefers cooked dishes, was converted into a sushi enthusiast after just one bite. I savored every morsel, appreciating the artistry and skill that went into each creation. I opted for a selection of seasonal specials, while Pieter, played it safe with salmon and tuna. We also tried a seasonal hot pot with local vegetables. It was the perfect midday treat.
Sushi Kiraku is run by an elderly couple and is beloved by the community. The sushi menu is diverse and colorfully plated. They even have a selection of vegetarian sushi that is just as delicious as the standard choices. Consistently highly rated and listed as one of Yamagata's treasured restaurants, Kiraku Sushi is a must go-to for dinner.
Exploring Local Crafts at Zao Specialty Museum Notoya
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to explore the charming streets of Zao Onsen. Our aim was to soak in the local atmosphere and perhaps find a unique souvenir to remember our trip. It wasn't long before we stumbled upon Zao Specialty Museum Notoya, a treasure trove of regional crafts and local products.

As someone who appreciates sustainable and ethically sourced goods, I was immediately drawn to the museum's commitment to showcasing local artisans. The shelves were filled with an array of handcrafted items, from traditional kokeshi dolls to locally made ceramics and textiles. I spent ages browsing the displays, admiring the skill and artistry that went into each piece.
I ended up purchasing a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, its design inspired by the surrounding mountains. It was the perfect reminder of our time in Zao Onsen, and I knew it would take pride of place in our home in Delft. Pieter, on the other hand, opted for a selection of local teas, eager to share the flavors of Japan with our friends back home. Yakiniku Delights at Hachiman
As evening approached, we made our way to Hachiman for dinner, a yakiniku restaurant recommended by several locals [itinerary, 2]. Located on Takayu Street, Hachiman is easily accessible and invites diners to enjoy a cozy yakiniku experience with outstanding flavor. Hachiman showcases some of Yamagata's most famous ingredients- Zao beef, lamb, and Yamagata pork. The owners are long-time residents of Zao Onsen who previously ran the izakaya Touen.

The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the aroma of grilling meat filled the air. We ordered a selection of Zao beef, lamb, and Yamagata pork, eager to sample the local specialties. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, and the experience of grilling it ourselves added an element of fun to the meal. We savored each bite, appreciating the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chefs. I paired my meal with a glass of local sake, while Pieter opted for a refreshing Japanese beer.
As we sat there, enjoying our meal and reflecting on the day's adventures, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a wonderful place. Zao Onsen had exceeded all our expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and culinary delights. It was a day we would cherish for years to come.
