A Fond Farewell to Þingvellir
As my final day in Þingvellir National Park drew to a close, I found myself overwhelmed with a mix of emotions. This solo journey had been everything I hoped for and more—a chance to connect deeply with nature, reflect on my commitment to sustainability, and challenge myself in ways I hadn't anticipated. The raw beauty of Iceland has left an indelible mark on my soul, and I'm eager to share the last chapter of this adventure.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Thingvellir Tourist Information Centre Café. The café offered a selection of pastries and strong coffee, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. It was surprisingly vegan-friendly, which I appreciated. After breakfast, I decided to revisit the Thingvellir National Park Visitor Center. I wanted to absorb as much as possible about the park's history and geology before heading out for the day. The interactive exhibits were incredibly informative, and I spent a good hour learning about the tectonic plates and the Alþing.
With a map in hand and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River. The drive to Hveragerði, the town nearest to the trailhead, was scenic, with rolling hills and glimpses of distant glaciers. It took about 45 minutes to get there from Þingvellir. Once I arrived at the parking area, the real adventure began.
The hike to the hot springs was invigorating. The trail wound through a landscape dotted with steaming vents and bubbling springs. The air was filled with the scent of sulfur, a constant reminder of the geothermal activity beneath my feet. The path was well-maintained, but there were some steep inclines that definitely got my heart pumping. Along the way, I passed the Djúpagilsfoss waterfall, a picturesque cascade tumbling into a narrow canyon. It was a perfect spot to pause and take in the stunning views.
As I continued, the landscape transformed into a surreal, almost otherworldly scene. Steam billowed from the earth, creating a hazy atmosphere that added to the mystique of the place. Finally, after about an hour of hiking, I reached the Reykjadalur thermal river. The water was invitingly warm, and I couldn't wait to soak my tired muscles.
There were wooden structures for changing, which made the experience much more comfortable. I found a spot where the water temperature was just right and eased myself in. The sensation of the warm water against the cool air was heavenly. I spent a blissful hour relaxing in the river, surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the valley.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
After the rejuvenating soak, I hiked back down, feeling refreshed and invigorated. The return journey was much easier, as it was mostly downhill. Back in Hveragerði, I grabbed a quick snack before heading towards my next destination: Hveradalir Geothermal Area.
The drive to Hveradalir was an adventure in itself. It involved navigating some F-roads, unpaved mountain roads that require a 4x4 vehicle. Thankfully, the streams were small and easily crossed. The landscape transformed dramatically as I ascended into the highlands. The vibrant colors of the mountains—yellow, green, orange, and red—were breathtaking. Steam rose from the earth, creating a surreal and magical atmosphere.
Hveradalir felt like another planet. I spent hours hiking through the geothermal area, marveling at the bubbling mud pots, hissing steam vents, and colorful mineral deposits. The trails were well-marked, but I made sure to wear sturdy hiking boots, as the terrain was uneven and muddy in places. The views were simply spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and glaciers.

As the day wore on, I made my way back towards Þingvellir, stopping briefly at Vinaskógur, the Friendship Forest. This small forest was founded in 1990 as a symbol of friendship and peace. World leaders and dignitaries have planted trees here over the years, and it was a peaceful place to reflect on the importance of international cooperation. It was opened in 1990 when the President of Iceland and the Queen of the United Kingdom each planted a tree.

For my final dinner in Þingvellir, I chose SILFRA RESTAURANT & BAR, located near Thingvallavatn lake. The restaurant is known for its modern Nordic cuisine and its emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the views of the lake were stunning. I savored every bite, knowing that this was my last taste of Iceland for now. I enjoyed some fresh Arctic Char. The flavors were clean and simple, highlighting the quality of the ingredients.

Reflecting on my solo adventure, I realized how much I had grown and learned. I had faced challenges, embraced new experiences, and discovered a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Pieter would be so thrilled to hear about everything I've seen and done. This trip has reinforced my commitment to sustainable travel and inspired me to continue exploring and sharing my experiences with others.
As I prepare to leave Þingvellir, I carry with me a heart full of gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose. Iceland, with its majestic landscapes and geothermal wonders, has captured my imagination and ignited my soul. I know that I will return someday, but for now, I bid you farewell, with a promise to continue sharing my journey towards a more sustainable and connected world.
Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Reykjavik to catch my flight back to Amsterdam. It's time to return to Delft and share my experiences with Pieter, and get back to my work as a sustainability consultant, refreshed and inspired by the raw beauty of Iceland.
I'll miss this place, but I know I'll carry its spirit with me always.
