Echoes of Þingvellir's Soul

Today, Þingvellir revealed more of its layered soul. The park hums with a quiet energy, a blend of geological wonder and historical weight. It’s a place where the earth speaks, and the echoes of the past resonate in every stone. My exploration today felt like a conversation with Iceland itself, a dialogue conducted in whispers and awe.

My day began, as it has each morning here, with a simple breakfast at the Thingvellir Tourist Information Centre Café. Grabbing a quick bite, I prepared myself for a day filled with exploration. The café was already bustling with fellow travelers, their voices a mix of anticipation and excitement for the adventures ahead. It’s a comforting reminder that while I'm traveling solo, I'm sharing this experience with countless others, each drawn to Iceland's unique allure. I made a mental note to grab a portable water filter at the visitor center shop, remembering that I had forgotten to pack one.

My first stop was Hestagjá, the Horse Gorge. The gorge is thought to have been used as a corral for horses during the gatherings of the Alþing, Iceland's ancient parliament. Standing there, I could almost picture the scene: horses safely grazing within the natural enclosure, the air filled with the sounds of the assembly. The gorge itself is a stunning example of the park’s geological drama, a deep rift in the earth showcasing the power of tectonic forces. It's a humbling experience to stand between the North American and Eurasian plates, a visible reminder of the planet's constant, restless nature.

The land here breathes history, a palpable sense of the past mingling with the present.

Next on my itinerary was Þingvallakirkja, the Þingvellir Church. This charming wooden church has a history stretching back to Iceland's conversion to Christianity around the year 1000. The current building dates back to 1859, but a church has stood on this site for centuries. I stepped inside, drawn by the simple beauty of the interior. Sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating the wooden pews and the altar. It was a place of quiet contemplation, a sanctuary amidst the grandeur of the national park. The churchyard, with its weathered headstones, added to the sense of history and peace.

Before heading to lunch, I popped into the Thingvellir National Park Visitor Center. I browsed the exhibits detailing the park's history, geology, and ecology. It was fascinating to learn more about the Alþing, the world's oldest parliament, which met here for centuries. The visitor center also had a shop, where I picked up a few souvenirs and, thankfully, remembered to buy an extra memory card for my camera. I had almost forgotten it again!

Lunch at SILFRA RESTAURANT & BAR was a welcome break. The restaurant offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape, which enhanced the experience of enjoying a hearty Icelandic meal. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in this unique environment. I overheard some other tourists discussing the Secret Solstice music festival that sometimes takes place nearby in May.

My final stop for the day was Peningagjá, the Money Gorge. This crystal-clear fissure is a popular spot for visitors to toss coins and make a wish. The tradition dates back to the early 20th century, and the water is so clear that you can see the coins shimmering on the bottom. I tossed in a coin, closed my eyes, and made a wish for continued curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world around me. It felt a little silly, but also strangely hopeful. I couldn't help but wonder if any credit cards were at the bottom as well.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Lindin Restaurant. The food was delicious, the atmosphere cozy, and the perfect way to reflect on the day's adventures. I thought about Pieter, back in Delft, and wished he could be here to experience this with me. Maybe someday we can return together.

Þingvellir is more than just a national park; it’s a place where Iceland's history and natural beauty converge. Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the park's panoramic views, including the Hrafnagjá Observation Deck and Thingvallavatn Panorama. I also want to visit Öxarárhólmi. I might even check out Einstök Bar in the evening. I am looking forward to another day of discovery in this extraordinary landscape. For now, I am content to let the whispers of Þingvellir lull me to sleep, dreaming of tectonic plates, ancient assemblies, and the enduring spirit of Iceland.
