Solo Adventure to Þingvellir: Embracing Iceland's Natural Wonders
Day 2: Iceland's Whispers: Exploring Þingvellir's Heart
Discover Þingvellir's geological wonders, historical depths, and serene beauty on a solo exploration of Iceland's treasured national park.
A Day of Discovery in Þingvellir
Today was a day of deep connection with Iceland's soul. Þingvellir National Park unfolded its layers, revealing both its breathtaking beauty and its poignant history. From the crystal-clear depths of Silfra to the somber echoes of Drekkingarhylur, every moment was a reminder of nature's power and humanity's story etched into the landscape.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Thingvellir Tourist Information Centre Café. The traditional lamb soup was exactly what I needed to fuel up for the day's adventures. It wasn't just the warmth of the soup, but the friendly atmosphere of the café that set a positive tone for the day. Sipping my coffee, I glanced over my itinerary, a mix of natural wonders and historical sites awaiting exploration.
First on the list was Hakið, Þingvöllum, the main viewpoint overlooking the park. As I drove, the landscape transformed into a vast expanse of lava fields and distant mountains. Arriving at Hakið, the panoramic view was simply breathtaking. The sheer scale of the Almannagjá gorge, the meeting point of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, was awe-inspiring. It was easy to see why this place holds such significance, both geologically and historically. I took a moment to appreciate the silence, broken only by the wind, feeling the immense weight of the earth beneath my feet.

The clarity of Silfra is so profound that it feels like floating in air, suspended between two worlds.
Next, I ventured to Silfra, the famous fissure known for its crystal-clear waters and the unique opportunity to snorkel or dive between tectonic plates. Though I opted not to dive this time, the allure of the water was undeniable. I watched as divers geared up, their excitement palpable. The water's clarity was astonishing, with visibility stretching over 100 meters. It felt like looking into another world, a serene, blue abyss where the earth's raw power is subtly displayed. I made a mental note to return with proper gear and experience this extraordinary place from within its depths.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Þrastalundur, a restaurant known for its stunning views of the Sog River. I savored a delicious meal while soaking in the tranquil scenery. The restaurant was bustling with families and travelers, all enjoying the warmth and hospitality. It was a perfect spot to recharge before continuing my exploration of Þingvellir.

After lunch, I walked to Drekkingarhylur, also known as the Drowning Pool, a place of somber history. The pool, surrounded by serene nature, stands as a stark reminder of Iceland's grim past. In the 17th and 18th centuries, women convicted of certain crimes were executed here. Standing by the tranquil water, it was hard to imagine such brutality occurring in such a beautiful setting. A memorial plaque lists the names of the women who lost their lives here, a poignant tribute to their memory. It was a sobering experience, prompting reflection on justice, morality, and the weight of history.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to a well-deserved dinner at Restaurant Varma in Hveragerði. The drive was scenic, passing through rolling hills and charming villages. Varma offered a cozy and intimate atmosphere with a menu that highlighted Scandinavian cuisine. I enjoyed a delicious meal of fresh fish, perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. The staff were friendly and attentive, making the dining experience truly memorable.

Before heading back to my campsite, I made a detour to Ölverk Pizza & Brewery for a relaxing evening. Located in Hveragerði, this geothermal-powered brewery is known for its craft beers and wood-fired pizzas. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with both locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the evening. I sampled a few of their unique brews, each with its own distinct flavor, and indulged in a delicious pizza with unconventional toppings. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Back at the campsite, as I settled into my tent, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Þingvellir had revealed its many facets, from its geological wonders to its historical depths, leaving me with a profound appreciation for this unique place. Despite forgetting my portable water filter and an extra memory card, the day unfolded perfectly.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Hestagjá, Þingvallakirkja (Þingvellir church), and Peningagjá. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Thingvellir National Park Visitor Center. As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about Pieter and how much he would have enjoyed this day. I made a mental note to bring him here someday, to share in the beauty and history of Þingvellir.
