A Day of Discovery in Moulay Idriss

Today, Lena and I set out to further explore the enchanting town of Moulay Idriss, a place that seems to hold a unique blend of history, spirituality, and everyday Moroccan life. After several days of immersion, the town has revealed itself to be a place where ancient traditions meet the vibrant pulse of modern life, and I was eager to capture more of its essence.

Our day began, as most days here do, with a delightful breakfast at Haytam. The reviews I had read were mixed, but Lena and I always try to keep an open mind. It turned out to be a simple yet satisfying start to the day. I opted for the brochettes, while Lena enjoyed a traditional Moroccan pancake. With our stomachs full, we were ready to explore.

First on our itinerary was the Khemis Gate. While technically located in Meknes, it felt like a fitting starting point, a symbolic entrance into the wider region's historical tapestry. The gate itself is a marvel, showcasing the intricate designs and grand architecture that define Moroccan craftsmanship. As we stood there, admiring the detailed zellij work and the imposing structure, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history it has witnessed.

Travel isn't always pretty. It isn't always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart, but that's okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks upon your memory, upon your consciousness, upon your heart, and upon your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

Next, we ventured to DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN. Though we weren't staying there, I was curious to see this renovated historic building that blends traditional Moroccan architecture with modern comforts. The building was impressive. It felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by original artifacts and thoughtful design. Lena was particularly taken with the rooftop terrace, which offered a breathtaking view of the medina. I could easily imagine spending hours there, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the panoramic vista. Although we did not stay there, we were able to envision what it would be like to stay in such an authentic place.

For lunch, we chose Cafe Restaurant Ksar Pharaon. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering a delightful blend of traditional Moroccan dishes and modern cafe favorites. I decided to try a tagine, which was rich with flavor. Lena opted for a couscous dish, light and fluffy. The ambiance was warm and inviting, adorned with local decor that added to the overall charm. The staff were attentive and eager to help, making our dining experience all the more enjoyable.

After lunch, we decided to immerse ourselves in the local shopping scene, with a visit to زيارة باب مولاي إدريس. This wasn't just a shopping trip; it was an exploration of local crafts and traditions. The shop was filled with a variety of items, each telling its own story. I was particularly drawn to a small, intricately carved wooden box, which I purchased as a memento of our time here. Lena found a beautiful handwoven scarf, its colors reflecting the vibrant hues of Morocco.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Grillade Albanna for dinner. The aromas wafting from the kitchen were irresistible. I chose grilled meats, while Lena savored a flavorful couscous. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists alike sharing meals and stories. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, surrounded by good food and good company.

Reflecting on our day, I realized how much this region had to offer. From the historical grandeur of Khemis Gate to the serene ambiance of DAR INES, and the culinary delights of Cafe Restaurant Ksar Pharaon and Grillade Albanna, every moment was a sensory experience. Even the simple act of shopping at زيارة باب مولاي إدريس became an opportunity to connect with local culture.

As we walked back to our homestay, Lena and I discussed our plans for tomorrow. We are planning to visit the Haroune Aqueduct and Lahdim Square. I am excited to see these historical sites and experience more of what this region has to offer. I am especially looking forward to trying La Colombe Blanche, a bar that I've heard good things about. With only a couple of days left on our trip, we want to make the most of every moment.

The evening was filled with the quiet joy of shared experiences. Lena sketched in her notebook, capturing the essence of the day's adventures, while I organized my photos, eager to share them with you all. We sipped mint tea, a ritual that has become a comforting routine, and savored the sweetness of the moment. As I write this, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this region and share its stories with you. Each day brings new discoveries, new connections, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and complexity of Moroccan culture. It's a journey that has changed me in ways I am only beginning to understand, and I am excited to see what the final days of our trip will bring.

Tomorrow marks our last full day in the Moulay Idriss Region, and while I'm excited to see what awaits us, I also feel a tinge of sadness knowing that our time here is coming to an end. But as I've learned on this trip, every ending is also a new beginning, and I look forward to carrying the spirit of Moulay Idriss with me wherever I go.
