Day 7: A Day of Serenity: Gardens, Shrines, and Hidden Bars in Kyoto
Immerse yourself in Kyoto's tranquil beauty with visits to lush gardens, historic shrines, and a hidden bar, a perfect solo exploration.
Finding Peace in Kyoto's Green Spaces
Today was a day dedicated to exploring the quieter, more contemplative side of Kyoto. After a week of bustling temples and crowded markets, I was eager to lose myself in nature and find some inner peace. It turned out to be a truly rewarding experience, filled with unexpected discoveries and moments of serene beauty.
My day began, as usual, with breakfast at The Chapter Kyoto, a Tribute Portfolio™ Hotel. The hotel's breakfast buffet has become a comforting routine, a familiar start before venturing into the unknown each day. I fueled up with some fresh pastries and strong coffee, steeling myself for a day of walking and exploration.

My first stop was the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. It's funny; I almost skipped it, thinking, How different can a botanical garden be? But I'm so glad I didn't! The gardens are truly a hidden gem, especially during this time of year. The cherry blossoms were just starting to bloom, creating a delicate pink canopy over the pathways. It was a photographer's dream, and I spent a good hour snapping photos of the blossoms from every angle.

The Kyoto Botanical Garden, opened in 1924, is one of the oldest and most comprehensive botanical gardens in Japan. As I wandered through the meticulously curated landscapes, I was struck by the sheer variety of plant life. There were traditional Japanese gardens, a European-style garden, and even a conservatory filled with tropical plants. It was a journey around the world in a single afternoon. The air was filled with the sweet scent of plum blossoms and the gentle hum of bees flitting from flower to flower. I found a quiet bench near a pond and simply sat there, soaking it all in. It was a perfect moment of tranquility.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of settings.
Leaving the gardens, I headed north towards Shimogamo Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest and most important Shinto shrines. Getting there involved a pleasant walk through the Tadasu-no-Mori forest, a primeval woodland that surrounds the shrine. The towering trees, some of them centuries old, created a cool, shaded canopy overhead. It felt like stepping back in time, away from the modern city and into a world of ancient spirits and natural beauty.

Shimogamo Shrine, officially known as Kamo-mioya Shrine, dates back to the 6th century, long before Kyoto became the capital of Japan. As I approached the main hall, I could feel the weight of history and the palpable sense of reverence that permeated the air. The shrine is dedicated to the deities Kamo-Taketsune-no-Mikoto and his daughter, Kamo-Tamayori-hime, who are believed to protect the city and its inhabitants. I took my time exploring the various structures within the shrine complex, admiring the intricate architecture and the serene atmosphere. I even stopped by the Kawai Shrine, a small sub-shrine dedicated to beauty and feminine well-being, where I saw ema (votive tablets) adorned with colorful drawings of faces. It was a charming and whimsical touch.
After Shimogamo Shrine, I decided to venture further north to Kifune Shrine, nestled in the mountains above Kyoto. The journey itself was an adventure, involving a train ride on the Eizan Railway and a scenic bus ride through winding mountain roads. Kifune is known for its association with water and is dedicated to the deity of rainfall, Takaokami-no-Kami. The shrine has a mystical atmosphere, enhanced by the sound of the rushing Kibune River and the towering cedar trees that surround it. It's believed to be over 1,600 years old, founded by the goddess Tamayori-hime.

One of the unique features of Kifune Shrine is its water lot, or *omikuji*. Instead of receiving a pre-printed fortune, you purchase a blank slip of paper and dip it into the shrine's sacred water. As the paper absorbs the water, your fortune magically appears. Mine revealed a message of encouragement and good luck, which I took as a positive omen for the rest of my trip. I also explored the Okunomiya, the inner sanctum of the shrine, which is said to be located on the site where the goddess Tamayori-hime's boat came to rest. The Okunomiya has a large rock, known as the boat stone, which is said to be where the goddess' yellow boat is buried.
As evening approached, I made my way back to the city center, feeling refreshed and invigorated by my day in nature. For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a fine dining experience at French Dining Top of Kyoto, located atop the Kyoto Granbell Hotel. The restaurant offers panoramic views of the city, and the cuisine is a fusion of French techniques and Japanese ingredients. It was a delightful culinary journey, and the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

After dinner, I was in the mood for a nightcap, so I sought out Concrete Bar, a hidden gem recommended by a local I met earlier in the week. Tucked away in a small alleyway near Sanjo Station, Concrete Bar is a cozy and intimate space with a laid-back atmosphere. The bartender was a friendly and knowledgeable mixologist who crafted a delicious cocktail based on my preferences. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The bar is known for its cheap drinks and great owner, a little hideaway tucked away in a small corridor.

I must admit, walking back to the hotel tonight, I felt a pang of sadness knowing that my Kyoto adventure is drawing to a close. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Nijo Castle, Rengeo-in (Sanjusangendo) Temple, and the Kyoto International Manga Museum. I might also try to find the Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store. I intend to make the most of my remaining days here, soaking up as much of Kyoto's culture and beauty as possible. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible city, and I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you.
It's moments like these, wandering through ancient shrines and discovering hidden bars, that make travel so enriching. As I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm reminded of the importance of slowing down, embracing the unexpected, and finding beauty in the simplest of things. And who knows what tomorrow will bring? That's the magic of solo travel – the freedom to chart your own course and discover hidden gems along the way.
