Kyoto's Golden Embrace: Day One Unveiled

My journey to Kyoto began today, and what a start it has been! Immersing myself in the city's serene beauty, I explored ancient temples, wandered through meticulously designed gardens, and savored the exquisite flavors of Japanese cuisine. It's a sensory feast that promises a deeper understanding of this captivating culture.

The morning dawned with a sense of anticipation. After a smooth flight from Munich to Osaka and a comfortable train ride to Kyoto, I checked into The Chapter Kyoto, a Tribute Portfolio™ Hotel. The hotel's onsite restaurant provided a convenient and delightful start to the day with a traditional Japanese breakfast. It was a nourishing beginning, setting the stage for a day of exploration and discovery.

My first stop was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As the bus approached, I could already glimpse the shimmering gold reflecting in the morning sun. The temple, with its top two floors covered in gold leaf, stood majestically overlooking a large pond. Formally known as Rokuon-ji, it was originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Following his death, it was converted into a Zen Buddhist temple. The history of the temple is fascinating, having been rebuilt several times, most recently in 1955 after being burned down by a monk. The gardens surrounding Kinkaku-ji are a fine example of Muromachi Period landscapes, inviting visitors to explore winding paths and discover constantly shifting perspectives. I spent a good hour wandering around, taking in the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings. The reflection of the golden pavilion on the pond was truly mesmerizing.

Kyoto is a city where ancient traditions and modern life intertwine, creating a unique tapestry of experiences that captivate the soul.

Next on the itinerary was Ryoan-ji, the site of Japan's most famous rock garden. Originally an aristocrat's villa during the Heian Period, it was converted into a Zen temple in 1450. The rock garden, a rectangular plot of pebbles surrounded by low earthen walls, features 15 rocks laid out in small groups on patches of moss. One of the intriguing aspects of the garden is that from any vantage point, at least one of the rocks is always hidden from view. The meaning of the garden is unclear, with some believing it represents islands in a sea or a tiger carrying cubs across a pond. I sat on the wooden veranda of the Hojo, the head priest's former residence, and contemplated the garden. The simplicity of the design and the ambiguity of its meaning were both calming and thought-provoking. It’s a space that encourages introspection, something I find myself needing more and more these days, given the fast-paced nature of my life back in Munich.

After Ryoan-ji, I visited Ninna-ji Temple, a World Heritage Site founded in 888 by Emperor Uda. It is the head temple of the Omuro school of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism. Ninna-ji has a rich history, having been reconstructed in the 17th century after being destroyed by fire during the Onin War. The temple is known for its five-story pagoda and its orchard of late-blooming dwarf cherry trees called Omuro cherry trees. Although it's a bit early in the season for the full bloom, I could see the beginnings of the blossoms, a promise of the beauty to come. The temple itself features beautifully painted screen walls and a walled garden, offering a glimpse into the past.

For lunch, I headed to Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, a tonkatsu restaurant located near Kyoto Station. I had heard great things about their healthy and high-quality tonkatsu, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, a testament to its popularity. I ordered the Katsukura Tonkatsu Set, which included a breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet, rice, miso soup, and cabbage salad. The tonkatsu was perfectly cooked, with a crispy exterior and a moist, tender interior. The miso soup was hearty and flavorful, and the cabbage salad was refreshing. What sets Katsukura apart is the ability to blend your dipping sauce at the table, grinding your own sesame seeds and adding a special tonkatsu sauce. It was a delightful culinary experience and a satisfying break from sightseeing.

As evening approached, I made my way to Kikunoi Roan for dinner. This two-Michelin-starred restaurant is known for its exquisite kaiseki cuisine, a traditional Japanese multi-course meal. The restaurant is run by Yoshiharu Murata, the younger brother of Kikunoi chef Yoshihiro Murata, and offers a more casual setting than the main restaurant. The first floor features counter seating, allowing diners to witness the chefs' swift and delicate movements. I opted for the chef's tasting menu, which featured a series of beautifully presented dishes showcasing seasonal ingredients. Each course was a work of art, both visually and gastronomically. The flavors were subtle yet complex, and the presentation was impeccable. The experience was a true celebration of Japanese culinary artistry. I learned that Roan Kikunoi was one of the first restaurants to serve authentic Kaiseki cuisine at a counter. Throughout the meal, I witnessed the chefs' swift yet delicate movements and quiet conversations. The proximity to the guests and clever use of a compact space meant every dish reached me at its absolute best.

After such an elaborate and refined dinner, I decided to experience Kyoto’s nightlife. I ventured to Bar K6, a renowned establishment known for its sophisticated atmosphere and expertly crafted cocktails. The bar exudes an old-world charm, reminiscent of an American film, with its cozy decor and knowledgeable servers. I enjoyed a classic highball, expertly prepared, while soaking in the ambiance and engaging in conversation with fellow patrons. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights.

As I reflect on my first day in Kyoto, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. The city's beauty, history, and culinary scene have already left a lasting impression. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, with a visit to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Tenryu-ji Temple, and Okochi Sanso Garden on the itinerary. For dinner tomorrow, I am looking forward to Arash's Kitchen for lunch and Gion Nanba for dinner. But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Tenryu-ji, and Okochi Sanso Garden. I'm particularly excited about the bamboo forest; Lena always raved about it after seeing it in a documentary. I also intend to visit the Kyoto Crafts Store. I'm hoping to find a special souvenir for Lena there, something that captures the essence of Kyoto's artistic spirit.

Good night from Kyoto!
