A Solo Renaissance Journey in Florence
Day 4: A Day Among Giants: Art, Gardens, and Florentine Fare
Immerse yourself in Florence's artistic heart, from Santa Croce's tombs to Boboli Gardens' beauty, capped with Tuscan culinary delights.
Whispers of the Renaissance
Today was a deep dive into the heart of Florence, a day where history, art, and nature intertwined to create an experience that resonated with my soul. It was a day of discovery, reflection, and simply being present in a city that breathes art from every pore. From the hallowed halls of Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence to the serene paths of the Boboli Gardens, Florence offered a symphony of experiences that I'm eager to share.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Belcore. I opted for a simple yet satisfying meal of fresh pastries and a strong cappuccino, fueling up for the day's adventures. The restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, setting a positive tone for the day. Eric B. from TheFork mentioned that Belcore has great food and fantastic waiters, who keep surprising with small extras, which I can attest to.
First on the agenda was the Basilica of Santa Croce. As I approached, the sheer scale of the basilica was breathtaking. The facade, with its neo-Gothic style, stood proudly against the clear February sky. Inside, the atmosphere was hushed, reverent. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, casting colorful patterns on the ancient stone floor. Santa Croce is more than just a church; it's a pantheon, the final resting place of some of Italy's most celebrated figures. To walk among the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli is to walk through the very foundations of the Renaissance. I found myself lingering at each monument, contemplating the legacies of these giants.
The Basilica of Santa Croce, constructed around 1294, stands as the largest Franciscan church globally. It replaced an earlier building and was funded by Florence's wealthiest families. Despite its intended reflection of the austere Franciscan lifestyle, Santa Croce boasts 16 richly decorated chapels, showcasing contributions from renowned artists like Giotto di Bondone. The basilica is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Historic Florence.
I was particularly moved by the tomb of Leonardo Bruni, a Chancellor of the Republic, sculpted by Bernardo Rossellino. It struck me as a poignant reminder of the humanism that defined the era, a celebration of earthly achievement and intellectual curiosity. It was interesting to know that Ugo Foscolo, who died in England, was reburied here in 1871; in his celebrated *Sepolcri* he had written of the Santa Croce tombs as 'urns of the strong, that kindle strong souls to great deeds', and had thereby given rise to the secular view of the basilica as a Pantheon of civic memories.
To wander through Santa Croce is to trace the footsteps of giants, to feel the pulse of a city that has shaped the course of history.
Leaving the Basilica, I made my way to the Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air sculpture gallery in the Piazza della Signoria. The Loggia dei Lanzi, also called the Loggia della Signoria, is a building on a corner of the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy, adjoining the Uffizi Gallery. Built between 1376 and 1382, the Loggia dei Lanzi offered a striking contrast to the solemnity of Santa Croce. Here, under the open sky, stood masterpieces of sculpture, each telling its own dramatic story. Benvenuto Cellini's *Perseus with the Head of Medusa* was particularly captivating. The bronze figure, with its intricate details and powerful symbolism, seemed to pulse with life. The Loggia was teeming with tourists, all craning their necks and snapping photos, but I found a quiet corner to simply observe, to let the artistry sink in.
The Loggia dei Lanzi's name originates from the Landsknechts (Lanzichenecchi in Italian, corrupted to Lanzi), German mercenary pikemen who served as the personal guard of Grand Duke Cosimo I. These soldiers were often stationed at the loggia, thus giving it its colloquial name. After the construction of the Uffizi at the rear of the Loggia, the Loggia's roof was modified by Bernardo Buontalenti and became a terrace from which the Medici princes could watch ceremonies in the piazza.
Before heading to my next destination, I popped into Boutique Nadine, a charming shop I had read about. It was conveniently located, and I was eager to see what treasures it held. Boutique Nadine, with two locations, specializes in carefully selected vintage pieces and supports designs and jewellery from local emerging designers. The shop had a curated collection of vintage clothing, bags, and shoes, alongside unique accessories and interesting ornaments. Nadine L. from Edmonton, if you ever visit Florence, make sure to visit Boutique Nadine!
My final stop for the day was the Boboli Gardens, a sprawling oasis of green behind the Pitti Palace. As I stepped through the gates, I was immediately transported to another world. The gardens, with their manicured lawns, fountains, and sculptures, offered a respite from the bustling city. Despite being February, the gardens were still lush and vibrant, a testament to the mild Florentine climate. The Boboli Gardens are open from Monday to Sunday, and close at 4.30 pm in January, February, November, and December.
I wandered along winding paths, discovering hidden grottoes and panoramic viewpoints. The Fountain of Neptune, with its imposing figure of the sea god, was a sight to behold. I spent hours simply strolling, breathing in the fresh air, and marveling at the beauty that surrounded me. The Boboli Gardens, developed between the 15th and 19th centuries, span 45 hectares of land, making them the largest open-air museum in Florence, filled with sculptures, fountains, and grottoes. The Upper Botanical Garden and the Viale dei Cipressi are beautiful areas to explore on foot.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city, I made my way to Vini e Vecchi Sapori for dinner. I had heard rave reviews about this traditional trattoria, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The restaurant was cozy and intimate, with wooden tables and exposed brick walls. The menu featured classic Florentine dishes, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. I decided on the *pappardelle al ragu di anatra* (pappardelle with duck ragu), a hearty pasta dish that was simply divine. The service was warm and attentive, making me feel like a cherished guest. Spectacular service is something that people note in their reviews, and many reviewers find that prices are democratic for what you receive. The cute decor and quiet atmosphere let guests feel relaxed here.
The day's end found me reflecting on the Chianti Classico Collection 2025 event that took place today at Stazione Leopolda. It was an event dedicated to the press and industry professionals, followed by a day open to the public. The event included meeting more than 200 producers and tasting more than 700 signature Gallo Nero labels, including Chianti Classico vintages, Riserva and Gran Selezione, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico and Olio DOP Chianti Classico.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Pitti Palace, Giardino Bardini, and Palatine Gallery. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Mad - Souls & Spirits, a bar recommended for its unique atmosphere and crafted cocktails. It promises to be another day filled with art, history, and culinary delights.
As I walked back to the Golden Tower Hotel & Spa, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Florence had cast its spell on me, and I was eager to see what tomorrow would bring. It's moments like these, when I'm immersed in beauty and history, that I feel most alive. And it's these moments that I'm so grateful to share with you, my readers.
