Florentine Majesty: Pitti Palace and Beyond

Today was a deep dive into the opulent world of Florence's past. I set out to explore the grandeur of the Pitti Palace, lose myself in the art of the Palatine Gallery, and find serenity in the Giardino Bardini. It was a day of contrasts, from the bustling halls filled with masterpieces to the quiet corners of a hidden garden, and I couldn't wait to soak it all in.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cantinetta delle Terme. Fuelled by strong coffee and a delicious pastry, I made my way towards the Oltrarno district, eager to immerse myself in the day's itinerary. The air was crisp, carrying the promise of a beautiful day, perfect for exploring.

First on the agenda was the imposing Pitti Palace. This massive structure, once home to the Pitti family and later acquired by the Medici, now houses several museums. As I approached, I was struck by its sheer size and the imposing facade. It felt as though the palace was a silent guardian of Florence's rich history.

I started with the Palatine Gallery, eager to feast my eyes on the Renaissance masterpieces within. The gallery is arranged in a series of lavishly decorated rooms, each one a feast for the eyes. Paintings by Raphael, Titian, and Rubens adorned the walls, their vibrant colors and intricate details drawing me in. I spent hours wandering through the rooms, marveling at the skill and artistry of these masters. The sheer volume of art was overwhelming, but in the best possible way. I found myself particularly drawn to Raphael's portraits, their subjects seeming to gaze back at me with knowing eyes.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

After the Palatine Gallery, I ventured into the Royal Apartments, a glimpse into the lives of the Medici and their successors. The rooms were opulent, filled with ornate furniture, tapestries, and frescoes. I could almost imagine the grand balls and political intrigues that once took place within these walls. It was fascinating to see how the palace had evolved over time, each ruling family leaving their mark on its design and decoration. According to recent news, the royal apartments have been reopened to the public after some renovation work, so I was lucky to be able to see them.

Leaving the Pitti Palace, I sought refuge in the Giardino Bardini, a hidden gem perched on a hillside overlooking the city. The garden is a series of terraces, each offering a different view of Florence. As I climbed the steps, I was rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Arno River. The air was filled with the scent of flowers, and the only sounds were the chirping of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves. It was a welcome contrast to the bustling city below.

The Giardino Bardini is divided into three distinct gardens: a formal Italian garden, an English woodland, and an agricultural park. I wandered through each one, enjoying the different landscapes and perspectives. The Italian garden was meticulously manicured, with symmetrical flowerbeds and geometric fountains. The English woodland was more wild and natural, with winding paths and hidden grottoes. The agricultural park featured a newly planted orchard, a nod to the garden's past as a working farm. The garden is also hosting an exhibition of photographs by Marcello Fara, titled Shapes of Nature, which I found particularly interesting.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back down the hill, my heart full of art and beauty. Before heading back to the Golden Tower Hotel & Spa, I decided to stop by Mad - Souls & Spirits, a cozy bar known for its creative cocktails. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring, sipping on a expertly crafted drink in a relaxed atmosphere.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Ristorante Borgo San Jacopo, a Michelin-starred restaurant located near the Ponte Vecchio. The restaurant offered stunning views of the Arno, and the food was exquisite. I savored each bite, reflecting on the day's adventures. The tagliatelle with sea urchins was a particular highlight, a dish I won't soon forget. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with Florentine splendor.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Museo Galileo, the Campanile di Giotto, and Piazzale Michelangelo. I'm excited to delve deeper into Florence's scientific history and enjoy more panoramic views of the city. I'm also planning to do some shopping at Rinascente Firenze, to pick up some souvenirs for Olivia and myself.

This solo trip has been an incredible experience so far. Florence is a city that truly captivates the senses, and I feel so fortunate to be able to explore it at my own pace. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!

I must admit, I did forget my sunglasses back in Toronto, and with the sun reflecting off the Arno, I found myself squinting more than once today. A minor oversight, but a reminder to double-check my packing list next time! Despite this, the beauty of Florence shone through, making it a day I'll cherish for years to come.
