A Solo Renaissance Journey in Florence
Day 7: Florentine Farewell: Discovering Hidden Gems on My Last Day
Unveiling the serene beauty of San Miniato, artistic wonders at Strozzi Palace, and spiritual depths of Museo di San Marco.
A Day of Serene Discoveries
As my Florentine adventure draws to a close, I decided to dedicate my final day to exploring some of the city's lesser-known, yet equally captivating, treasures. I wanted to soak in the atmosphere away from the bustling crowds, reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had this past week. It was a day of quiet contemplation, artistic appreciation, and spiritual enrichment, a perfect way to bid farewell to this enchanting city.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Saporium Firenze. The restaurant's commitment to seasonal ingredients was evident in every bite, and it set a delightful tone for the day ahead. Fuelled up, I was ready to embrace the quieter side of Florence.
My first stop was the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, perched high above the city. The brisk morning air invigorated me as I made my way up, the promise of panoramic views spurring me onward. The walk itself was a journey, each step revealing more of Florence's beauty.
Reaching the Basilica di San Miniato, I was immediately struck by its serene presence. Far from the throngs of tourists, this ancient church offered a moment of peaceful reflection. The Romanesque architecture, with its intricate green and white marble facade, was a sight to behold. Inside, the play of light through the stained-glass windows created a tranquil atmosphere, inviting introspection.

I wandered through the basilica, admiring the ancient mosaics and the crypt, feeling a deep connection to the history that permeated every stone. The views from the churchyard were simply breathtaking, offering a sweeping panorama of Florence bathed in the soft morning light. I could see the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Arno River snaking through the city, a reminder of all the incredible sights I had explored during my stay.
The beauty of Florence lies not only in its famous landmarks but also in its hidden corners, waiting to be discovered.
Leaving San Miniato, I headed towards Strozzi Palace, eager to immerse myself in the world of art once more. The palace itself is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, its imposing facade hinting at the artistic treasures within. Today, the Palazzo Strozzi was hosting the Tracey Emin Exhibition. The Palace also offers a wide range of exhibitions and collateral activities, and has revitalized the Palace courtyard with a café, comfortable benches for sitting, wireless internet connection, and a comprehensive program. I decided to take a guided tour of the exhibition.

After a light lunch at La Buchetta Food & Wine Restaurant, a charming spot known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine, I made my way to the Museo di San Marco. This museum, housed in a former monastery, is home to an extraordinary collection of frescoes by Fra Angelico, one of the greatest painters of the Renaissance. As I stepped inside, I felt a sense of reverence wash over me.

The Museo di San Marco was founded in 1436 and built following a project by the architect Michelozzo. The convent played an important role in the religious and cultural life of the city, as highlighted by the story of Friar Gerolamo Savonarola, who made the convent his headquarters. The museum occupies a large area of the Dominican convent of San Marco and maintains its atmosphere intact. I wandered through the tranquil corridors and into the monks' former cells, each adorned with exquisite frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ. The Annunciation, a masterpiece of Renaissance painting, was particularly moving, its delicate brushstrokes and vibrant colors conveying a sense of divine grace. The museum also includes the former Library on the first floor, built by Michelozzo for Cosimo de' Medici, where a considerable number of illuminated choir books are displayed. I spent hours lost in the beauty of Fra Angelico's art, feeling a deep sense of peace and inspiration.
As evening approached, I decided to indulge in a pre-departure dinner at Golden View Firenze. I secured a table with a view of the Ponte Vecchio. The lights of the city twinkled on the Arno, creating a magical atmosphere. I savored every bite of my meal, reflecting on the incredible journey I had undertaken this past week. The restaurant's menu featured a delightful array of dishes, from the Pescheria, Insalatina di puntarelle, gambero rosso e mandorle to preset menus such as Menù degustazione - dalla terra. Each bite was a celebration of Italian culinary artistry.

After dinner, I ventured to the Atrium Bar at the Four Seasons Hotel for a nightcap. I was keen to try one of their signature cocktails, a tribute to Florence's history. I opted for the Firenze Capitale, a mix of coffee-infused vermouth, bitter liqueurs, and saffron, a liquid ode to the city's brief reign as Italy's capital. Sipping my cocktail, I thought about all the incredible experiences I've had during my solo adventure. I made a toast to Florence, a city that has captured my heart with its beauty, history, and charm.
