A Day of Discovery and Delight

Today was a whirlwind of exploration, a perfect blend of intellectual stimulation, breathtaking views, and, of course, mouthwatering Tuscan cuisine. Florence continues to enchant me with its ability to offer something new and exciting around every corner. It's days like these that remind me why I booked this solo adventure in the first place.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Oliviero 1962.
I opted for a classic Italian breakfast: a cappuccino and a freshly baked pastry. The restaurant had a charming, old-world feel, and it was the perfect way to start my day before diving into the world of science and history. I must say, starting the day with a good coffee is essential for me, especially knowing I'll be walking around all day.

Unveiling Scientific Wonders at Museo Galileo

My first stop was the Museo Galileo. As someone with a keen interest in both history and technology, I was particularly excited about this museum. It houses an impressive collection of scientific instruments, many of which belonged to Galileo himself. Seeing the tools he used to make groundbreaking discoveries was truly awe-inspiring. From telescopes to globes, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the scientific revolution.

I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the exhibits, marveling at the ingenuity and craftsmanship of these historical instruments.
The museum wasn't overly crowded, which allowed me to take my time and really absorb the information. I even downloaded the museum's app, which provided insightful audio commentary and enhanced my experience tenfold.

Scaling New Heights at Campanile di Giotto

Next on my itinerary was the Campanile di Giotto, Giotto's Bell Tower. I knew climbing it would be a bit of a workout, but I was eager to see the panoramic views of Florence from the top. The tower stands tall at almost 85 meters above Florence.
The climb was indeed challenging, with 414 steps winding their way to the summit. However, with each step, the anticipation grew, and the views became more and more rewarding.

Unfortunately, the Campanile di Giotto was closed for maintenance work. I was quite bummed out about it, but I guess it just gives me another reason to come back to Florence! So instead, I decided to take a stroll around the Piazza del Duomo, admiring the architecture and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. There's always something to see and experience in this city.

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the unexpected detours and discoveries along the way.

A Culinary Interlude at Il Vezzo

By this point, I was ready for lunch, so I headed to Il Vezzo, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that made me feel right at home. I decided to try one of their pasta specialties, and it was absolutely divine. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, and it was clear that the ingredients were locally sourced.

Il Vezzo was born with the aim of creating something new, something different from what the already 'crowded' Centre of Florence offered. I was very happy with my choice. The staff was friendly and attentive, making me feel like a valued guest. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge before continuing my Florentine adventure.

Shopping Spree at Rinascente Firenze

After lunch, I indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Rinascente Firenze. This department store is known as the Store of Craft, and it certainly lived up to its name. From high-end fashion to artisanal goods, Rinascente offered a wide array of products to tempt any shopper. I spent some time browsing the various floors, admiring the craftsmanship and unique designs.

The building itself is beautiful, and Rinascente is located between the Cathedral and the bell tower designed by Giotto, on one side, and Piazza della Signoria on the other. I ended up purchasing a beautiful leather-bound journal, a perfect souvenir to document my travels. Rinascente is more than just a department store; it's a cultural experience in itself.

Sunset Spectacle at Piazzale Michelangelo

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Piazzale Michelangelo, a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the city. The walk up was a bit steep, but the reward was well worth the effort. As I reached the top, I was greeted by a breathtaking view of Florence bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. The Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and Palazzo Vecchio all stood majestically against the colorful sky.

I found a spot along the balustrade and simply soaked it all in. The atmosphere was magical, with fellow travelers and locals alike sharing in the beauty of the moment. Piazzale Michelangelo is truly a must-visit destination in Florence, offering a unique perspective on this stunning city. It's one of the best places to visit in Florence in February, and I was the only person there!

A Tuscan Farewell Dinner at Coquinarius

To cap off my day, I enjoyed a delightful dinner at Coquinarius, a restaurant known for its convivial cuisine and natural wines. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the menu featured a range of Tuscan specialties. I opted for a traditional dish, and it was bursting with flavor. The service was exceptional, and the staff made me feel like part of the family.

Coquinarius is a bar and restaurant with a 30% minimum natural wine in their offer. The place is small and lovely, with Italian cuisine in the center of Florence with a very good selection of natural wines. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery. Before heading back to the Golden Tower Hotel & Spa, I took one last look at the illuminated cityscape, feeling grateful for the experiences of the day.

Tomorrow marks my final day in Florence, and I plan to make the most of it. My itinerary includes visits to the Basilica di San Miniato, Strozzi Palace, and Museo di San Marco. I'm also looking forward to trying out a new restaurant for lunch and ending the day with a drink at Atrium Bar. Stay tuned for my final reflections on this solo Renaissance journey!
