Whispers of the Past

Today marked the beginning of our Kyoto adventure, and what a start it was! From the moment we stepped off the train, I felt an energy here that's unlike anywhere else I've been. It's a blend of reverence and vibrancy, a sense that the past is not just remembered, but still very much alive. Olivia and I were both eager to dive right in, and Kyoto certainly didn't disappoint.

Our first stop was the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine (Thousand Torii Gates), famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountainside. The crisp January air nipped at our faces, but the sun was shining, casting long shadows that danced between the vermillion structures. As we walked, the path became a tunnel of color, each gate inscribed with the names of donors. It was truly breathtaking.

I love capturing moments, so I was in my element, snapping photos left and right. Olivia, ever the artist, was more interested in the details – the subtle carvings, the way the light played on the wood, the tiny fox statues (kitsune) that seemed to watch us from every corner. We climbed for what felt like hours, though I know it was probably closer to one, stopping frequently to catch our breath and admire the views of Kyoto sprawling below. The higher we climbed, the fewer people we encountered, adding to the sense of tranquility.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of reflection amidst the beauty of the world.

For breakfast, we had a delightful experience at Kizahashi, located in our hotel, The Thousand Kyoto. The Japanese breakfast set was a work of art, each small dish bursting with flavor. I particularly enjoyed the perfectly grilled fish and the delicate tofu. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

After Fushimi Inari, we headed to Kiyomizu-dera, another of Kyoto's most celebrated temples. Perched on a hillside, the temple offers stunning panoramic views of the city. The wooden stage, constructed without a single nail, was particularly impressive. Legend has it that leaping from the stage will grant your wish if you survive the 13-meter drop – needless to say, we admired it from a safe distance! The temple complex was bustling with visitors, but there was still a sense of serenity amidst the activity. We wandered through the various halls and pagodas, taking in the intricate details of the architecture and the beautiful gardens. The Otowa Waterfall, where visitors can drink from three separate streams of water for health, longevity, and success, was another highlight.

For lunch, we ventured to Yasakadori Enraku, a charming restaurant tucked away near Kennin-ji Temple. We savored a delicious and refined meal in a private room. The delicate dashi flavors were exquisite, and the setting was perfect for a quiet respite. Olivia particularly enjoyed the oden and Kyoto pickles, while I was captivated by the fresh sashimi.

In the late afternoon, we strolled through the Kyoto Crafts Store, a treasure trove of traditional Japanese crafts. Olivia, with her keen eye for design, was immediately drawn to the intricate textiles and ceramics. I was fascinated by the delicate artistry of the lacquerware. We ended up buying a beautiful tea set to bring back to Toronto, a reminder of our time in Kyoto. I am always on the lookout for unique gifts, and I think this will be a perfect reminder of our trip.

As evening approached, we made our way to Kikunoi Roan for dinner, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant renowned for its exquisite kaiseki cuisine. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of refined elegance. Each course was a work of art, a delicate balance of flavors and textures that showcased the best of seasonal ingredients. The chef's attention to detail was remarkable, and the service was impeccable. It was an unforgettable culinary experience, and I can see why it earned its Michelin stars.

To cap off our first day, we decided to seek out a unique nightcap. We found ourselves at L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its French bartender and magical cocktails. The atmosphere was intimate and dimly lit, and the bartender, a charming Frenchman, put on a show as he mixed our drinks. It felt like stepping into another world, a hidden gem in the heart of Kyoto. Olivia ordered a concoction with exotic fruits, while I opted for an Old Fashioned with a Japanese twist. Both were expertly crafted and utterly delicious. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

It’s funny, I almost forgot the portable phone charger at home. I made sure to double check my bag after that!

Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by the seamless blend of old and new in Kyoto. Ancient temples stand alongside modern shops, traditional crafts are reimagined with contemporary designs, and Michelin-starred restaurants offer innovative takes on classic cuisine. It's a city that honors its past while embracing the future, and I can't wait to explore more of its hidden corners.

Tomorrow, we're heading to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. I've seen so many pictures of it, and I'm eager to experience its ethereal beauty firsthand. We'll also visit Tenryu-ji Temple and the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama. I'm particularly excited about the monkey park – I've always had a soft spot for primates! For dinner, we're planning to try Arash's Kitchen, and perhaps another bar in the evening, The Common One Bar Kyoto. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to share it with you all.

“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” – Aldous Huxley. It's a sentiment that resonates deeply with me, as I believe that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about challenging our own assumptions and broadening our perspectives. Kyoto has already begun to work its magic, and I'm excited to see what other insights and experiences await us in the days to come.

The events happening this month make the city even more lively. I read that the Toka Ebisu Festival from January 8th to 12th is a must-see, hopefully we will be able to witness it during our stay. Also, the Hatsumode (first shrine visit of the New Year) celebrations at various shrines such as Fushimi Inari Shrine, Heian-jingu Shrine, and Yasaka-jinja Shrine are very popular.

Good night from Kyoto!
