Kyoto, Until Next Time

As our eleven-day journey through Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve had. From ancient temples to vibrant markets, this city has captivated Olivia and me with its unique blend of tradition and modernity. Today, our last day, was a culmination of all that we’ve come to love about Kyoto.

Our final day in Kyoto began with a delightful breakfast at Anzukko. This cozy spot, tucked away near Sanjo Station, is renowned for its inventive gyoza. I opted for the classic Anzukko Gyoza, while Olivia, ever adventurous, tried the Camembert cheese gyoza. The crispy, thin-skinned dumplings were bursting with flavor, providing the perfect start to our day. It was a small, intimate space, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home. I made a mental note to try and recreate the potato salad when we got home – creamy, smoky and comforting. It was a great way to fuel up for a day of exploring some of Kyoto's most serene and spiritual sites.

Our first stop was the Katsura Imperial Villa, a place I'd been particularly excited about. Securing reservations in advance was essential, and I was glad I'd planned ahead. The villa is a masterpiece of Japanese architecture and garden design. As we strolled through the meticulously manicured gardens, I was struck by the harmony between the buildings and the natural landscape. The villa's design incorporates elements from the Tale of Genji, and each building is carefully positioned to offer unique views and perspectives. The experience was both educational and inspiring, offering insights into Japanese architectural styles. Olivia, with her graphic designer's eye, was particularly taken with the way the light played across the shoji screens, creating an ever-changing display of patterns and shadows.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its ancient structures, but in the way it seamlessly blends history with the present.

Next on our itinerary was the Shimogamo Shrine, one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kyoto. Surrounded by the Tadasu no Mori forest, the shrine exudes a sense of tranquility and peace. As we walked through the forest, the towering trees sheltered us from the city's hustle and bustle, creating a serene oasis. The shrine itself is steeped in history, dating back to the 6th century. We learned about the Kamo clan, who were the shrine's patrons, and the various deities enshrined here. The shrine's architecture, with its bright vermillion gates contrasting against the lush greenery, was a sight to behold. Olivia was particularly fascinated by the Kawai Shrine, dedicated to the goddess of beauty, where we saw ema votive tablets shaped like hand mirrors, each adorned with colorful drawings and wishes for improved looks. I couldn’t help but chuckle, imagining Olivia secretly hoping for a little extra boost in the beauty department.

Our final shrine visit of the day was to Kifune Shrine, nestled in the mountains north of Kyoto. The journey to Kifune was an adventure in itself, involving a train ride and a bus trip through winding mountain roads. As we approached the shrine, the scenery transformed into a winter wonderland, with snow-covered trees and a crisp, cold air. Kifune Shrine is dedicated to the god of water, and its location alongside a flowing river adds to its mystical atmosphere. The stone staircase leading up to the main hall, lined with red wooden lanterns, was particularly striking against the white snow. We drew omikuji (fortune slips) and, following tradition, tied them to a designated spot on the shrine grounds. The shrine was beautiful, and the winter landscape made it even more magical. The famous Kibune winter landscape was truly worth the visit, capturing the icy magic!

After a day of spiritual exploration, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Yoshikawa for lunch. This renowned tempura restaurant offered a delightful culinary experience. We sat at the counter, watching as the chefs expertly prepared each dish. The tempura was light and crispy, and the ingredients were fresh and seasonal. From the delicate prawns to the flavorful vegetables, each bite was a delight. The restaurant's elegant ambiance and attentive service added to the overall experience. Olivia, who is usually not a big fan of fried food, was pleasantly surprised by how light and non-greasy the tempura was. It was a perfect midday treat, providing us with the energy we needed for the rest of our day.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Rōji Tempo. This charming shop offered a curated selection of local crafts and souvenirs. From traditional ceramics to handmade textiles, there was something for everyone. I picked up a beautiful tea set for my mother, while Olivia found a unique piece of jewelry for herself. It was a great way to support local artisans and bring home a piece of Kyoto's culture. The shop's cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a pleasant and memorable shopping experience.

As evening approached, we decided to try a cocktail bar called The Roots of all evil. We had heard great things about their gin selection and innovative cocktails, and we were not disappointed. The bar had a cozy, stylish atmosphere, inspired by the roots drawing water from the earth. I ordered their signature cocktail, THE ROOTS, featuring burdock. Olivia opted for a botanical cocktail, which was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. The bartender was knowledgeable and passionate about gin, and he shared some interesting facts about the different craft gins they offered. It was a perfect spot to unwind and reflect on our day.

For our final dinner in Kyoto, we chose French Dining Top of Kyoto, a revolving restaurant located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel. The restaurant offered panoramic views of the city, which slowly rotated as we dined. The French cuisine was exquisite, and the service was impeccable. We savored each course, enjoying the elegant atmosphere and the stunning scenery. It was a perfect way to celebrate our last night in Kyoto. Olivia and I reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip, from the serene gardens of the Golden Pavilion to the bustling streets of Nishiki Market. As the city lights twinkled below us, we felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared.

As our time in Kyoto comes to an end, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. I'm sad to leave this enchanting city, but I'm also grateful for the memories we've created. Kyoto has a way of capturing your heart, and I know that we'll be back someday. Tomorrow, we head back to Toronto, carrying with us the spirit of Kyoto and a longing to return. Until then, arigato, Kyoto, for the memories and the magic.

This trip has reinforced my belief that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new cultures and connecting with the world around us. As a data analyst, I often find myself immersed in numbers and statistics, but travel allows me to step outside that world and engage with people and places on a more personal level. And as someone who grew up in the historic city of Évora, Portugal, I have a deep appreciation for the preservation of cultural heritage, which is something that Kyoto does so well. The city's ability to balance tradition and modernity is truly remarkable, and it's something that I hope to see more of in the world.

Olivia and I are already planning our next adventure, and I'm excited to share our experiences with you all. Stay tuned for more travel stories, tips, and insights from around the world. Until then, happy travels!
