Tilcara's Treasures: A Day of Discovery
Today was all about embracing the unique culture and stunning landscapes of Tilcara. From the gentle pace of a llama caravan to the explosion of flavors in local restaurants, it was a day filled with authentic Argentine experiences. Join me as I recount our adventures, shared with my wonderful wife, Olivia, and the memories we created together.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kactus, a cozy spot known for its excellent food and friendly service. I opted for the Ejecutivo breakfast, while Olivia enjoyed a smoothie. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the perfect start to a day of exploration.
With our stomachs full, we set off for an experience I had been particularly excited about: the Caravana de Llamas. This wasn't just a walk; it was a journey back in time, following ancient indigenous trails with these gentle, noble animals. Olivia and I learned that llamas are not for riding, but are used to carry equipment. Our guide, Santos Manfredi, shared stories of the region, the traditions of llama herding, and the secrets of living in harmony with these Andean creatures.
Walking with llamas is more than a picturesque moment; it's a reconnection with nature, history, and the ancestral customs of northern Argentina.
The landscape was breathtaking, the silence broken only by the soft padding of the llamas' feet and the occasional call of a bird. We walked through valleys and along hillsides, the llamas carrying our gear with an effortless grace. Olivia, ever the artist, was captivated by the colors of the hills, the textures of the earth, and the way the light played across the landscape. I, on the other hand, was fascinated by the history of the trails we were walking, imagining the countless generations who had travelled these paths before us.
The Caravana de Llamas ended near the iconic Cartel de TILCARA, the town's sign. Of course we stopped to take some photos, capturing the moment and the incredible views. We then strolled through the town, soaking in the atmosphere and browsing the local shops.
For lunch, we chose El Nuevo Progreso, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Argentine cuisine. This wasn’t just any meal; it was an experience crafted by Florencia Rodríguez, a chef passionate about showcasing Andean ingredients. Olivia and I shared a tamal de gallo y maíz morado, and a milanesa. The flavors were intense, the ingredients fresh and local, and the presentation beautiful.
In the afternoon, we explored the local market, a vibrant hub of activity where locals and tourists mingled. We sampled local cheeses, tasted empanadas, and haggled for souvenirs. It was a feast for the senses, a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells.
No visit to Tilcara is complete without trying the local alfajores, so a stop at El Molle Alfajores was essential. This small factory is known for its artisanal alfajores made with regional products. We bought a selection of different flavors, from the classic dulce de leche to the more adventurous quinoa and maize morado.
As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Parrillada La Tilcareña for dinner. The scent of grilling meat filled the air, and the atmosphere was lively and convivial. We ordered a mixed grill, a carnivore's delight featuring local beef, chorizo, and morcilla. The meat was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, and the flavors were rich and smoky.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Tilcara had captured my heart. It's a place where ancient traditions meet modern life, where the landscape is both dramatic and beautiful, and where the people are warm and welcoming. Olivia and I felt a deep connection to this place, a sense of belonging that I hadn't expected.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Monolito al Trópico De Capricornio Paralelo and Cumbre EL.CONO, TILCARA. I am also looking forward to trying out SARA-SISA Bar Café Cervecería.
As I write this, I'm sipping a glass of local wine, the stars shining brightly overhead. I feel grateful for this opportunity to explore Argentina with Olivia, to immerse ourselves in its culture, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the simple things in life: good company, good food, and a beautiful place to call home, even if just for a little while. This trip is not just a vacation; it's a journey of discovery, a chance to learn, to grow, and to connect with the world around us. And I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
