Following the Sun to the Tropic of Capricorn
Today was all about embracing the spirit of exploration, both geographical and culinary, here in Tilcara. Olivia and I set out to experience a blend of the region's unique landmarks and authentic flavors, eager to soak in as much of the local culture as possible. It's days like these that make travel so rewarding, piecing together the essence of a place through its sights, sounds, and tastes.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante EL HUMAHUAQUEÑO. This place is a true gem, embodying the spirit of traditional Argentine *bodegones*. It wasn't about luxury, but about honest, homemade food served in generous portions. I opted for the *empanadas de carne fritas*, and Olivia chose the daily special, a comforting soup that, according to her, warmed the soul. The empanadas were perfectly balanced – a delicious filling without being too greasy. It was the ideal start to a day of adventure. We even overheard some tourists being a bit rude to the staff, but the staff handled it with grace.

Fueled up, we drove to the Monolito al Trópico de Capricornio Paralelo. It's not every day you get to stand on a spot where the sun's rays fall directly overhead during the solstice. The monolith itself isn't huge, but it marks a significant geographical point. The surrounding landscape was stunning, with the vibrant colors of the high-altitude desert creating a surreal backdrop. We took some photos and soaked in the unique atmosphere. It's a humbling experience to be at the intersection of nature and human history, especially knowing that ancient civilizations once thrived here.

Next on our list was Cumbre EL.CONO, TILCARA. The climb was invigorating, offering panoramic views of Tilcara and the surrounding valleys. Reaching the summit, we were rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree vista. The crisp mountain air and the sense of accomplishment made it all worthwhile. Olivia, with her background in graphic design, was particularly captivated by the play of light and shadow on the landscape. I tried to capture the moment with my camera, hoping to do justice to the beauty that unfolded before us.

Travel is about the places you go, but also the moments you share.
After our trek, we were ready for lunch. We headed to La Picanteria, a local spot known for its Argentine cuisine. It was a cozy, unpretentious place, perfect for refueling after our morning adventures. I decided to try a traditional stew, rich and hearty, while Olivia opted for a lighter salad with local cheeses. The flavors were authentic and satisfying, giving us a true taste of the region.

As the afternoon waned, we sought out SARA-SISA Bar Café Cervecería for a relaxing break. The atmosphere was laid-back and welcoming, a perfect spot to unwind. We sipped on local craft beers, reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar had a quirky charm, with colorful décor and a friendly vibe. I even struck up a conversation with a local artisan, learning about the traditional crafts of the region.

For dinner, we chose La peña de Rolito, enticed by its reputation for regional dishes and live folk music. The restaurant was lively and filled with both tourists and locals. We arrived early, which was a good call, as it filled up quickly. The music created a festive atmosphere, and we found ourselves tapping our feet along with the rhythm. I ordered the *cordero a la brasa* (grilled lamb), and Olivia went for the *ravioli with lamb stew*, a regional specialty. Both dishes were delicious, showcasing the hearty flavors of northern Argentina. The portions were generous, and the service was efficient, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. Apparently they sometimes even let stray dogs in, which luckily didn't happen while we were there.

After dinner, we lingered at La peña de Rolito, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the music. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery. As we walked back to our accommodation, the stars were out in full force, a reminder of the vastness and beauty of this region. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared today, a feeling that only travel can evoke.
Tomorrow, our final day in Tilcara, we plan to visit Plaza Sargento Antonino Peloc and experience Cabalgatas Pachacuti. It's bittersweet knowing our time here is coming to an end, but we're determined to make the most of every moment. We'll also grab breakfast at Chicha Libre Resto Bar and lunch at Restaurant Sirviñacu. And, of course, we'll need to pick up some souvenirs at Kuntur | Artesanias con diseño.
As I reflect on today, I'm struck by the simple joys of travel – the thrill of discovering a new landscape, the pleasure of savoring authentic flavors, and the connection with local culture. Tilcara has truly captured our hearts, and I know we'll carry these memories with us long after we leave.
I'm also reminded that I forgot my sunglasses and portable charger! Good thing Olivia remembered hers, or I'd be in trouble. I'll have to make a note to double-check my packing list next time. It's the little things that can make a big difference on a trip like this.
The Carnival of Tilcara is coming up in February, so maybe we'll have to come back! It sounds like a vibrant and exciting event. Or maybe we'll try to come back for the Inti Raymi festival.
Embark on an 11-day family journey to Tilcara, Argentina, exploring vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and local traditions.
