Finding Beauty in the High Altitude of Tilcara

Today was a day of exploration and immersion into the natural and artistic heart of Tilcara. Olivia and I set out to discover the hidden gems of this charming town, and it's safe to say, we weren't disappointed. From unique artisanal crafts to the serene beauty of a high-altitude botanical garden, Tilcara offered a sensory feast that captivated our senses.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Rockola. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of local pastries filled the air as we stepped inside. It was a cozy spot, filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a taste of Tilcara. Olivia went for the traditional medialunas, while I opted for a slice of torta negra, a rich, dark cake that was the perfect fuel for our morning adventures. Energized, we set off to explore the artisanal scene at Cartel Tilcara. The place was a vibrant hub of creativity, showcasing the talents of local artists and artisans.

We spent a good hour wandering through the stalls, admiring the intricate weavings, colorful ceramics, and unique jewelry. Olivia, with her keen eye for design, was particularly drawn to a set of hand-painted ceramic bowls, each depicting scenes from the Quebrada de Humahuaca. I found myself captivated by a collection of woolen ponchos, each one a testament to the skill and artistry of the local weavers. It was tempting to buy everything in sight, but we settled on a few carefully chosen pieces that would serve as reminders of our time in Tilcara.

Next on our list was the Altura Botanical Garden, nestled at the foot of the Pucará de Tilcara. As we made our way towards the entrance, the landscape began to transform, the town giving way to a tapestry of cacti, shrubs, and wildflowers. The garden itself was a testament to the biodiversity of the region, showcasing a remarkable collection of plants native to the Puna and the Quebrada de Humahuaca. We wandered along the winding paths, marveling at the resilience of these high-altitude species. Olivia, ever the artist, was busy snapping photos of the vibrant blooms and the unique textures of the cacti. I was fascinated by the informative signs that detailed the medicinal properties of many of the plants.

One of the highlights of the garden was the Piedra Campana, a peculiar rock formation that emits a bell-like sound when struck. I couldn't resist giving it a try, and the clear, resonant tone echoed through the garden, adding a touch of magic to the already enchanting atmosphere. As we explored further, we came across a section dedicated to plants used in traditional Andean cuisine. It was fascinating to learn about the various herbs and vegetables that have sustained the people of this region for centuries.

By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite, so we headed to Bienmesabe for a well-deserved meal. This restaurant was cozy and inviting, and we were immediately drawn to the aroma of wood-fired pizza. We decided to share a pizza topped with local cheese and vegetables, along with a bottle of Argentine Malbec. The pizza was delicious, the crust perfectly crisp, and the toppings bursting with flavor. It was the perfect way to refuel before our afternoon adventures.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we found ourselves at Viejo Olivo, a charming wine bar that came highly recommended. The bar had a rustic yet elegant ambiance, with exposed brick walls, wooden tables, and soft lighting. We settled into a cozy corner and ordered a selection of local wines and tapas. The wines were a revelation, each one showcasing the unique terroir of the Jujuy region. The tapas were equally impressive, featuring a creative blend of local ingredients and flavors. Olivia particularly enjoyed the empanadas filled with llama meat, while I was partial to the humitas, a traditional Andean dish made from corn, cheese, and spices.

The evening culminated in a delightful dinner at Senador Tilcara. The restaurant exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere, with its soft lighting and rustic décor. We were immediately impressed by the menu, which featured a tempting array of regional specialties. Olivia decided to try the llama stew, while I opted for the quinoa risotto. Both dishes were expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. The llama stew was tender and savory, while the quinoa risotto was creamy and rich. We paired our meal with a bottle of Antropo Malbec reserva, which complemented the flavors perfectly. For dessert, we shared the pear dessert served with vanilla ice cream. The staff was friendly and attentive, making our dining experience even more enjoyable.

As we walked back to our guesthouse under the starlit sky, we reflected on the day's adventures. Tilcara had truly captured our hearts with its unique blend of art, nature, and culture. We were already looking forward to tomorrow, when we planned to explore the Plaza Cnel. Manuel Álvarez Prado and hike the Camino a la Garganta del Diablo. But for now, we were content to savor the memories of a day well spent, filled with beauty, discovery, and delicious food. I'm also looking forward to visiting Arte Nativo tomorrow; Olivia is keen on finding some authentic textiles to bring home.

We also discovered today that Tilcara is gearing up for several festivities throughout December, including pre-Christmas celebrations and local cultural events. It seems we've arrived at a vibrant time, adding an extra layer of excitement to our stay.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to find a portable charger when we get to a bigger town. My phone is constantly running out of battery with all the photos and videos I'm taking. And maybe some new sunglasses – the sun here is intense!

Tilcara has a certain magic to it that's hard to describe. It's a place where time seems to slow down, where the beauty of nature is all around you, and where the warmth of the local people makes you feel right at home. I'm so glad we decided to come here, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
