A Day of Discovery in Tilcara

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the unique charm of Tilcara. From exploring ancient caves to delving into the region's history and indulging in local cuisine, it was a day filled with adventure and cultural enrichment. Olivia and I, along with the family, were eager to uncover the hidden gems of this Argentine treasure.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant El Patio. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional Argentine flavors were the perfect way to start our explorations. I opted for a strong coffee and some medialunas, while Olivia enjoyed a freshly squeezed orange juice. The kids were excited about the pastries, and the friendly service made us feel right at home.

Fueled up and ready, our first stop was the Cueva y Laberinto de Huichaira. The landscape was stunning, offering a moderate hike with rewarding views. The kids were absolutely thrilled, scrambling over rocks and exploring every nook and cranny. Olivia, ever the artist, was captivated by the natural rock formations, snapping photos at every turn. I must admit, navigating the terrain at 2,500 meters above sea level was a bit more challenging than my usual Toronto walks, but the breathtaking scenery made it all worthwhile.

The journey is the destination, and today, every step in Tilcara felt like discovering a new piece of its soul.

After our adventurous morning, we headed to the Museo Arqueológico Eduardo Casanova. As a history enthusiast, I was eager to learn more about the pre-Hispanic cultures of the region. The museum's collection was impressive, showcasing artifacts from various South American cultures, including the Tiahuanaco culture of Bolivia and the Diaguita culture of northwest Argentina. Olivia was fascinated by the ancient textiles and ceramics, while the kids were intrigued by the tools and weapons used by the early inhabitants. It was a great educational experience for all of us.

For lunch, we chose Restaurante EL HUMAHUAQUEÑO, a place known for its authentic, homemade flavors. We started with the empanadas de carne fritas, which were perfectly balanced – flavorful without being greasy. Olivia and I decided to try the daily menu, which included a hearty beef stew and a comforting soup. The kids enjoyed milanesa, a classic Argentine dish. The portions were generous, and the food felt like a warm hug from a local grandmother.

With our bellies full, we spent the afternoon at Hilandería Warmi - Tilcara. I was keen to support local artisans and find a unique souvenir to take back home. The shop was filled with beautiful textiles made from llama and sheep fibers. Olivia, with her keen eye for design, helped me pick out a stunning ruana for my mother. The kids were fascinated by the weaving process, and the staff was kind enough to explain the traditional techniques used in creating these intricate pieces. It was more than just a shopping trip; it was an immersion into the local craftsmanship and culture.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Restaurant Sirviñacu for dinner. The atmosphere was lively, with live music adding to the ambiance. We started with some local wine and empanadas, followed by traditional dishes like cazuela de llama and cordero. Olivia and I shared a bottle of Malbec, savoring the rich flavors and reflecting on our day's adventures. The kids enjoyed pasta, and the friendly service made it a delightful dining experience for everyone.

The weather in Tilcara today was pleasant, with highs around 20°C. The sun shone brightly, making our outdoor explorations all the more enjoyable. Although there was a slight chance of rain, it held off, allowing us to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the region.

One thing I've learned about traveling is that sometimes the things you forget end up being minor inconveniences rather than major setbacks. I did miss having my portable charger today, especially with all the photos and videos we were taking. And sunglasses would have been great to have while exploring the Cueva y Laberinto de Huichaira. But, these were minor things and didn't take away from the joy of the day.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Cartel Tilcara and the Altura Botanical Garden. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Tilcara’s unique landscapes and learning about the local flora. We might even stop by Viejo Olivo, Bar de Vinos y Tapas, for a relaxing evening.

Tilcara has a way of captivating you with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. As we walked back to our guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding, creating memories that will last a lifetime. From the ancient caves to the vibrant textiles and the delicious food, Tilcara has truly captured our hearts. And as we prepare for another day of exploration, I can't wait to see what other treasures this charming town has in store for us.

The town is preparing for Carnival which starts in late February, but we'll be long gone by then. It sounds like an amazing event though, with people dressing up as devils to celebrate Mother Earth. Maybe we'll have to come back another time to experience it.

Tilcara is more than just a destination; it's an experience that touches the soul. Good night from Argentina!

I will make sure to have my portable charger and sunglasses with me tomorrow!
