A Step Back in Time in Tilcara

Today marked the beginning of our Argentinian adventure in Tilcara, and what a start it has been! From exploring ancient ruins to savoring local flavors, every moment was filled with discovery. Olivia and I, along with the family, are already captivated by the charm and history of this place. The altitude is definitely something to get used to, but the stunning views more than make up for it. We're eager to share our experiences as we continue to explore this beautiful region.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at A La Payla Restaurant. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and local pastries filled the air. I opted for a strong espresso, needing that extra kick to combat the altitude. Olivia chose a selection of local teas, intrigued by the regional flavors. The kids, of course, went straight for the pastries, their faces covered in powdered sugar within minutes. A La Payla had a very authentic feel, a perfect way to start our day immersing ourselves in the local culture. I even managed to practice my Spanish with the friendly staff, a skill I'm determined to improve during this trip. The breakfast was simple but delicious, providing us with the energy we needed for a day of exploration.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the famed Pucará de Tilcara. The Pucará is an ancient pre-Inca fortress, and as we approached, I could feel the weight of history. Perched atop a hill, it offered panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. The kids were immediately excited, scrambling up the stone steps, their imaginations running wild with stories of ancient warriors and lost civilizations. Olivia, with her keen eye for detail, was fascinated by the stonework and the intricate construction of the fortress. As we explored the ruins, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity of the people who built this place so long ago. The views were simply breathtaking, stretching out across the vast landscape. The clear air and bright sun made the colors of the surrounding hills even more vibrant. We learned about the Omaguaca people who originally inhabited this fortress and their eventual conquest by the Inca Empire. It was a fascinating lesson in history, brought to life by the very stones beneath our feet.

Sometimes, the best way to understand the present is to walk through the echoes of the past.
Following our historical immersion, we ventured to the Quebrada de la Cruz. This stunning natural formation was a feast for the eyes, with its towering cliffs and vibrant colors. The kids were fascinated by the rock formations, pointing out shapes and figures in the stone. I took the opportunity to capture some photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the landscape. Olivia, ever the artist, was sketching in her notebook, trying to capture the essence of the Quebrada's beauty. The Quebrada de la Cruz offered a different perspective on the region, showcasing the raw power and beauty of nature. We spent a peaceful hour simply soaking in the scenery, enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. As we walked along the trails, we spotted various birds and small animals, adding to the sense of being immersed in nature.

For lunch, we stopped at Los Puestos Restaurante. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. The aroma of grilled meats and savory spices wafted through the air, making our mouths water. I ordered a traditional Argentinian asado, eager to sample the local cuisine. Olivia, always adventurous with her food choices, opted for a llama stew, a regional specialty. The kids, predictably, chose empanadas, a safe bet for even the pickiest eaters. The food was delicious, the meat tender and flavorful, the stew rich and hearty. The empanadas were a hit with the kids, who devoured them in minutes. Los Puestos offered a true taste of Argentina, a culinary experience that we all enjoyed. The lively atmosphere and friendly service added to the overall experience, making it a memorable meal.

After lunch, we explored the Paseo Artesanal De Pucará, a local artisan market. The market was a riot of colors and sounds, filled with vendors selling handmade crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. Olivia was in her element, browsing through the stalls, admiring the intricate designs and vibrant colors. The kids were fascinated by the various trinkets and toys, eager to take something home as a reminder of our trip. I purchased a hand-woven scarf, a perfect memento of our time in Tilcara. The market was a great place to interact with the local community, to learn about their traditions and customs. We even tried some local sweets, a delicious way to end our visit to the market. I found a beautiful, hand-painted bowl that I knew would look perfect in our dining room back in Toronto.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Chicha Libre Resto Bar for dinner. The restaurant had a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, with live music adding to the ambiance. We secured a table on the rooftop terrace, eager to enjoy the sunset views. The menu offered a variety of local and international dishes, catering to all tastes. I ordered a steak, cooked to perfection, while Olivia chose a vegetarian dish, made with local ingredients. The kids opted for pasta, a familiar favorite. The food was delicious, the service attentive, and the views spectacular. As the sun set over the mountains, we raised our glasses in a toast to our first day in Tilcara, grateful for the experiences and memories we had made. Chicha Libre was the perfect place to end our day, a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience that left us feeling content and satisfied.
