Exploring the Heart of Morocco: A Journey to Moulay Idriss
Day 13: A Day of Reverence and Relaxation in Moulay Idriss
Discover the spiritual heart of Morocco in Moulay Idriss, a day filled with history, natural beauty, and culinary delights with Olivia.
Sacred Sites and Sunset Views
Today was a day of deep reflection and simple pleasures in Moulay Idriss. Olivia and I explored historical landmarks, savored local cuisine, and soaked in the serene atmosphere of this holy city. It’s amazing how a place can be so steeped in history and yet feel so incredibly peaceful.
Our day began with a traditional Moroccan breakfast at Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon. The café, whose name pays homage to the Roman ruins of Volubilis, offered a delightful start to the day. I enjoyed a strong coffee while Olivia savored the fresh orange juice and pastries. The warm hospitality and the aroma of freshly baked bread made it a perfect way to kick off our explorations.

Fuelled up, we set out to visit the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er. As non-Muslims, we couldn't enter the mausoleum itself, but simply being in its vicinity was a powerful experience. The spiritual significance of this site, where Moulay Idriss I, the founder of Morocco's first Islamic dynasty, is buried, was palpable. I took a moment to reflect on the rich history and cultural heritage of this sacred town.

We then decided to immerse ourselves in nature with a visit to Bab Rmila Natural Park. Located a short distance from Moulay Idriss, the park offered a refreshing escape with its lush vegetation and serene paths. We strolled through the park, enjoying the clean air and picturesque scenery. The sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling created a peaceful ambiance, a welcome contrast to the bustling city.

“Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where history and nature intertwine.”
For lunch, we chose Grillade Albanna, a local restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan dishes. I opted for the grilled meats, while Olivia enjoyed a flavorful tagine. The food was simple, yet delicious, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients. It was a satisfying meal that gave us a true taste of Moroccan cuisine.

In the late afternoon, we returned to Moulay Idriss and decided to unwind at La Colombe Blanche. This guesthouse and restaurant is known for its stunning views of the town. We sat on the rooftop terrace, sipping mint tea and enjoying the panoramic vistas. The sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the white-washed houses and the surrounding hills. It was a magical moment, a perfect way to end the day.

Before dinner, we stopped by La Colombe Blanche, a charming spot recommended by a local. We enjoyed a couple of drinks, soaking in the laid-back atmosphere and chatting with fellow travelers. The place had a friendly vibe, and it was nice to connect with people from different parts of the world.
For our final meal of the day, we ventured to SCORPION HOUSE. The climb up the narrow medina streets was quite the workout, but the views from the house were well worth the effort. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and the food was some of the best we’ve had in Morocco. I tried the Moroccan salad, while Olivia raved about her tagine. The combination of delicious food, stunning views, and warm hospitality made it a truly memorable dining experience.

As we walked back to our accommodation, the town was quiet and peaceful. The stars were out, and the air was cool and crisp. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we had today. Moulay Idriss had touched my soul, reminding me of the importance of history, culture, and connection.
Tomorrow marks the last day of our Moroccan adventure. We plan to visit Kasabah Senhaji and the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa, soaking in as much of the local culture as possible before we head home. We’ll also be stopping by The Anou Cooperative to pick up some souvenirs. I’m looking forward to one last day of exploration and discovery with Olivia.
