A Fond Farewell

As our journey through the Moulay Idriss region draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve had. Today, our final day, was filled with a mix of cultural immersion, historical exploration, and culinary delights, perfectly encapsulating the essence of our Moroccan adventure. It's hard to believe that two weeks have flown by so quickly, but every moment has been etched into my memory, a testament to the beauty and richness of this land.

Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Cafe machhour. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the sweet scent of Moroccan pastries, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Olivia and I sat outside, soaking in the morning sun and watching the town slowly come to life. It was a simple pleasure, but one that allowed us to fully appreciate the tranquility of Moulay Idriss before diving into our final day of exploration.

Exploring Kasabah Senhaji

After breakfast, we decided to visit Kasabah Senhaji. This beautifully designed hotel, set just 3.7 kilometers from Volubilis, offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Although we weren't staying there, we were drawn in by its reputation for embodying authentic Moroccan hospitality. The traditional architecture and thoughtful décor, featuring local crafts, created a warm and inviting atmosphere.

We wandered through the gardens, admiring the views and soaking in the peaceful ambiance. It was easy to see why Kasabah Senhaji is considered a perfect retreat for those looking to explore the historical and cultural landmarks nearby. The hotel’s location is indeed advantageous, offering convenient access to both Moulay Idriss and the ancient ruins of Volubilis.

A Visit to the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa

Next on our itinerary was the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa in Meknes. This historic religious complex is dedicated to Mohammed al-Hadi ben Issa, the founder of the Isawiyya order of Sufism. The mausoleum is a significant pilgrimage site and a testament to the enduring legacy of al-Hadi ben Issa.

The complex includes a zawiya, a mosque, and the mausoleum itself. The architecture is a blend of different styles, reflecting the various periods of construction and renovation it has undergone. As we walked through the courtyard, we were struck by the serenity and spiritual significance of the place. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the inner sanctum, we were able to appreciate the beauty and grandeur of the complex from the outside.

Travel is not just about seeing new places, but about opening your mind to new perspectives and understanding different ways of life.

The history of Mohammed al-Hadi ben Issa is fascinating. Born in 1467, he was a descendant of Idris I of Morocco and became a prominent figure in the Sufi tradition. His teachings emphasized patience, reliance on God, and the importance of community. The Isawiyya order, which he founded, spread throughout Morocco and beyond, leaving a lasting impact on the region's religious landscape.

Lunch at Volubilis Restaurant

For lunch, we decided to try the Volubilis restaurant, drawn by its proximity to the historical site and its promise of Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant offered a relaxed atmosphere and a menu filled with traditional dishes. Olivia and I shared a tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices that are characteristic of Moroccan cooking.

While the service was satisfactory, the highlight was undoubtedly the food. The tagine was perfectly cooked, with tender meat and fragrant vegetables. It was a satisfying and authentic meal that provided a taste of local culinary traditions. The beautiful view also added to the experience.

Shopping at The Anou Cooperative

In the afternoon, we visited The Anou Cooperative, a unique shop that supports local artisans. This cooperative is dedicated to providing fair compensation and opportunities for Moroccan craftspeople, allowing them to thrive independently. It’s an artisan-led e-commerce platform that helps artisans overcome traditional barriers and access the global market.

We were impressed by the variety and quality of the goods on display. From intricately woven carpets to hand-crafted pottery, each item told a story of skill and tradition. Olivia, with her background in graphic design, was particularly interested in the patterns and techniques used in the textiles. We ended up purchasing a beautiful rug, knowing that our money was going directly to support the artisan who created it.

Dinner at La Baraka

As our final evening in Moulay Idriss approached, we chose to dine at La Baraka, a restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and welcoming ambiance. The restaurant is celebrated for its traditional dishes and use of fresh, local ingredients.

We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, followed by a couscous dish that was both flavorful and satisfying. The couscous was perfectly cooked, and the accompanying vegetables and meat were tender and aromatic. The staff were attentive and friendly, adding to the overall positive experience. La Baraka truly provided a culinary journey that highlighted the best of Moroccan flavors.

Reflections on Our Journey

As we savored our final meal, Olivia and I reflected on the incredible journey we’ve had in the Moulay Idriss region. From exploring ancient ruins to immersing ourselves in local culture, every moment has been enriching and unforgettable. We’ve learned so much about the history, traditions, and people of this fascinating part of Morocco.

One of the most rewarding aspects of our trip has been the opportunity to connect with local artisans and support their work. The Anou Cooperative, in particular, stands out as a model for fair trade and sustainable development. By purchasing directly from the artisans, we were able to contribute to their livelihoods and help preserve their cultural heritage.

We've also been deeply moved by the spiritual atmosphere of Moulay Idriss. The town's history as a pilgrimage site and its significance in Moroccan Islamic heritage have created a unique and profound sense of place. While we couldn't enter the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, we were able to appreciate its beauty and importance from the outside.

As we prepare to leave tomorrow, we carry with us a deep appreciation for the Moulay Idriss region and its people. This journey has been more than just a vacation; it has been an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with a culture that is both ancient and vibrant. We will cherish the memories we’ve made here and look forward to returning someday to continue exploring the wonders of Morocco.

There are no plans for tomorrow, as we will be heading back home, cherishing the memories we have made in this beautiful country.

Final Thoughts

Our time in the Moulay Idriss region has been a truly transformative experience. We’ve explored ancient ruins, immersed ourselves in local culture, and connected with the spiritual heart of Morocco. As we prepare to leave, we carry with us a deep appreciation for this remarkable place and its people. Until next time, Morocco!
