Meknes Beckons
Today was a journey back in time, a deep dive into the heart of Moroccan history and culture. Leaving the serene landscapes of the Moulay Idriss region behind for a day, Olivia and I ventured into the imperial city of Meknes. We were ready to immerse ourselves in its rich heritage, explore its magnificent monuments, and savor the flavors of its traditional cuisine. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and delightful experiences that I am excited to share.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Roman City [i]. The spread was a delightful mix of Moroccan and continental fare, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. I enjoyed some strong coffee, reminiscing about my favorite cafes back in Évora, while Olivia savored the fresh pastries. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the historical treasures of Meknes.
Our first stop was the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail [i, 13]. As we approached, the grandeur of the structure was immediately apparent. The mausoleum is a testament to the opulence and power of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who made Meknes his imperial capital in the 17th century. The intricate mosaics and elaborate carvings that adorned the walls were breathtaking.

The courtyards, interconnected and beautifully decorated with marble columns and a central fountain, exuded a sense of tranquility and reverence. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the tomb itself, the antechamber was more than enough to leave us in awe. The play of light through the windows, illuminating the detailed plasterwork and zellij tiles, created a mesmerizing effect. It was a truly magnificent space that spoke volumes about the artistry and craftsmanship of the time.
Visiting the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is more than just sightseeing; it's stepping into a world where history, art, and spirituality converge.
Leaving the mausoleum, we made our way to Lahdim Square [i, 13, 29]. This bustling square is the heart of Meknes, a vibrant hub where locals and tourists alike gather to experience the city's lively atmosphere. As we stepped into the square, we were immediately enveloped by a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and smells. Street performers entertained the crowds with acrobatic feats, while vendors showcased their wares, from colorful rugs and ceramics to traditional Moroccan slippers.

Olivia, ever the artist, was captivated by the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the handicrafts. I, on the other hand, was drawn to the food stalls, where the aroma of spices and grilling meats filled the air. We spent a good hour wandering through the square, soaking in the energy and haggling for souvenirs. Olivia managed to snag a beautiful hand-painted bowl, while I couldn't resist buying a bag of freshly roasted almonds.
For lunch, we chose La Baraka, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine [i, 5]. The restaurant offered a stunning view of Moulay Idriss, adding to the overall experience. We ordered a tagine and some Moroccan salads, savoring the rich flavors and spices that are characteristic of the region. The tagine, slow-cooked to perfection, was tender and flavorful, while the salads were a refreshing mix of fresh vegetables and herbs.

After lunch, we decided to explore Lahdim Square further. We found a cozy café with an outdoor terrace and settled in for some mint tea. As we sipped our tea, we watched the world go by, observing the interactions between locals and tourists, and marveling at the architectural beauty of the square. The Bab Mansour gate, a magnificent example of Moroccan architecture, stood proudly at one end of the square, its ornate decorations and grand scale serving as a perfect backdrop.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to SCORPION HOUSE for a pre-dinner drink [i, 2]. This bar, known for its unique ambiance and stunning views, was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing. The climb up the narrow medina streets was an adventure in itself, but the views from the terrace were well worth the effort.

We sipped on some local wine, enjoying the panoramic vistas of Moulay Idriss and the surrounding landscapes. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler who shared some interesting insights about the region. It was a truly memorable experience that added another layer to our Meknes adventure.
Dinner was at Volubilis Restaurant, where we indulged in more traditional Moroccan dishes [i]. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the food was exceptional. I opted for a hearty couscous, while Olivia chose a flavorful pastilla. Every bite was a celebration of Moroccan culinary artistry, a testament to the region's rich gastronomic heritage.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's experiences. Meknes had captivated us with its imperial grandeur, its vibrant culture, and its culinary delights. It was a city that seamlessly blended history and modernity, offering a unique glimpse into Morocco's rich past and promising future.
Tomorrow, we're heading back to Moulay Idriss to explore Zerhoun and Dar Moulay Idriss [i]. I'm particularly excited about visiting Zerhoun, as I've heard it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Olivia is looking forward to Dar Moulay Idriss, eager to learn more about the history and culture of this sacred town. We'll also be stopping by The Anou Cooperative, where we hope to find some unique, locally made crafts [i].
The call to prayer echoed through the night as we made our way back to our accommodation, a melodious reminder of the spiritual heart of Morocco. It’s funny how travel can sometimes feel like a pilgrimage of sorts, a journey to discover not just new places, but also new parts of ourselves. Tonight, as I close my eyes, I carry with me the echoes of Meknes, a city that has etched itself into my memory, a city that has whispered stories of sultans and souks, of art and aromas, of a Morocco that is both timeless and ever-changing.
I am also reminded that I need to buy a sun hat. I keep forgetting to protect my head, and the sun is quite strong. I should also consider getting a local SIM card to avoid roaming charges.
Until tomorrow!
