Discover the historical wonders of Meknes with João and Olivia! Explore ancient gates, serene basins, and savor local flavors in Morocco.
Echoes of History in Meknes
Today was a day of stepping back in time, as Olivia and I ventured into the heart of Meknes. The city's rich history whispered from every corner, inviting us to explore its ancient wonders. It's amazing how much history is concentrated in one place; it felt like walking through the pages of a history book.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa. This characteristic Moroccan house offered panoramic views that stretched across Volubilis and the surrounding landscapes. The air was crisp, and the morning light painted the hills in hues of gold as we enjoyed traditional Moroccan fare. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration.
Fuelled and ready, our first stop was the Bassin Souani صهريج السواني. This immense water basin, built in the 17th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail, is an incredible feat of engineering. As we approached, the sheer size of the basin was awe-inspiring. It stretches 149 by 319 meters, with a depth of about 3 meters. I tried to imagine what it must have been like during its prime, providing water to the royal gardens and surrounding areas. Olivia, ever the artist, was captivated by the stunning stonework and intricate arches, a true reflection of the artistic prowess of the era.

Wandering through the serene gardens that envelop the basin, we found tranquility amidst the historical grandeur. Lush greenery and vibrant flowers added splashes of color to the site, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and contemplation. We took a leisurely stroll along the pathways, soaking in the rich history and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. The ingenuity of the water management techniques from that era was truly remarkable.
The stones of Meknes whisper tales of sultans, artisans, and the enduring spirit of Morocco.
Next, we ventured towards the Khemis Gate. As one of the twelve gates encircling the medina of Meknes, Bab el-Khemis, or Khemis Gate, stands as a prominent symbol of the city. Built in the 17th century during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail, this grand entrance reflects the architectural finesse of the time. As we approached the gate, we were struck by its impressive design, characterized by intricate tile work and soaring arches that showcased the craftsmanship of the era. The vibrant colors and detailed mosaics narrated stories of the city's storied past. Olivia was particularly drawn to the green zellij that filled the arch, a hypnotic respite from the dull shades of brown and yellow that adorned most of the other places here.

The gate served as a portal to the bustling medina, where we immersed ourselves in the local culture. The energy of the medina was infectious, with vendors selling everything from spices to handcrafted goods. I picked up a beautiful leather journal, hoping to capture more of our Moroccan adventures in its pages. Olivia, of course, found a unique piece of jewelry, a silver pendant with intricate Berber designs.
For lunch, we stopped at Grillade Albanna. This restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and warm hospitality. We savored traditional dishes, expertly crafted with local ingredients and cherished recipes. I opted for the kefta, while Olivia enjoyed a flavorful tagine. The tastes of Morocco continued to impress us, each meal a delightful exploration of local flavors.

As the day wound down, we found ourselves at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق. Here, amidst the lively chatter of locals, we sipped on traditional mint tea. The sweetness of the tea and the aromatic mint provided a perfect ending to our day of exploration. Reflecting on our adventures, I felt a deep connection to Meknes, a city that effortlessly blends history with modern life.

Tomorrow, we plan to continue our historical journey by visiting the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and Lahdim Square. I am particularly excited to see the mausoleum, a site of great historical and religious significance. I'm also looking forward to experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of Lahdim Square. Each day in Morocco brings new adventures, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds.
As we walked back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had so far. Morocco is a land of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet modern life, and every corner holds a new discovery. I'm excited to continue sharing our journey with you all, and I hope you're enjoying the ride as much as we are.
