Gates and Gatherings in the Blue City

Today was another enchanting day in Chefchaouen, a city that continues to captivate Olivia and me with its unique charm and vibrant culture. As we near the end of our Moroccan adventure, each day feels like a precious gift, filled with new discoveries and unforgettable experiences. Today, we explored historical landmarks, savored local cuisine, and soaked in the lively atmosphere of this blue-washed haven.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. It was a delightful start, with freshly made crepes that had both sweet and savory options. I went for a traditional Moroccan crepe filled with honey and almonds, while Olivia chose a Nutella crepe, of course! The friendly owner made us feel right at home, and the cozy atmosphere set the perfect tone for the day. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can be such a delightful experience when shared with great company in such a unique setting.

“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.”

Fueled and ready, we set out to explore Bab El Ain, one of Chefchaouen's famed gates. As we approached, I couldn't help but feel a sense of stepping back in time. Bab El Ain, which translates to The Water Gate, has historically been the main point connecting the old medina with the newer parts of the city. The gate itself is a testament to Moroccan craftsmanship, with its intricate details and sturdy structure. I learned that the name comes from a nearby spring that once provided water to the tanneries established by the Spanish. Walking through the gate, I imagined the countless people who had passed through it over the centuries, each with their own stories and purposes. The energy of the place was palpable, a blend of history and the everyday life of Chefchaouen.

Next on our itinerary was Place Moulay El Mehdi, a central square known for its vibrant atmosphere. As we arrived, the square was bustling with activity. Locals and tourists alike mingled, creating a lively and welcoming environment. The square is named after Moulay El Mehdi, a significant figure in Moroccan history, and serves as a focal point for various cultural and social events. We took a leisurely stroll around the square, admiring the Spanish architecture and the central fountain, which added a touch of elegance to the scene. Olivia, ever the artist, was particularly taken with the play of light and shadow on the surrounding buildings, capturing the essence of the square with her keen eye.

For lunch, we ventured to Chez Foad, a restaurant recommended by several locals for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. Situated near Place Outa el Hammam, Chez Foad offered a cozy and inviting atmosphere. We decided to try the tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, and it did not disappoint. The rich flavors of the slow-cooked meat and vegetables, infused with aromatic spices, were a true delight. Olivia opted for the chicken skewers, which were equally delicious. The meal was made even better by the friendly service and the stunning views of the surrounding area. I made sure to try the Moroccan mint tea, a refreshing and integral part of Moroccan culture.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, we found ourselves at Café & restaurant Meftah, a spot known for its panoramic views and relaxed ambiance. We settled into a comfortable corner, ordered some traditional Moroccan pastries and mint tea, and simply soaked in the beauty of Chefchaouen. The café offered breathtaking views of the Rif Mountains and the blue-washed cityscape, creating a magical setting. The atmosphere was laid-back and inviting, making it the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. As we sat there, sipping our tea and enjoying the pastries, we reflected on our journey so far, feeling grateful for the experiences we had shared and the memories we had created.

Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we decided to extend our evening at Café & restaurant Meftah, drawn in by its inviting ambiance. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the evening air and the stunning views. I opted for a traditional Moroccan tagine, while Olivia decided on a light salad. The food was delicious, but the real highlight was the atmosphere. The soft lighting, the gentle music, and the murmur of conversations created a sense of warmth and community. It was the perfect way to end our day, feeling connected to the people and the place.

As we walked back to Maison D'hôtes Afassi, the air was filled with the sounds of the city winding down for the night. The narrow streets, illuminated by the soft glow of streetlights, took on an ethereal quality. We reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this magical city. We chatted about our plans for tomorrow, which include a visit to Park Sidi Abdelhamid and Bab Chaouen. The day will end with a visit to CHAOUEN GIFTS, where we plan on buying some local gifts to take home to our families in Canada and Portugal. As we drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what tomorrow would bring, knowing that Chefchaouen still had many secrets left to reveal.
