Finding Paradise in Akchour: A Day of Waterfalls and Wonders

Today was an escape from the blue embrace of Chefchaouen, a venture into the rugged beauty of the Rif Mountains. I've always been drawn to nature's artistry, and the promise of cascading waterfalls and emerald pools was too alluring to resist. It was a day of hiking, savoring local flavors, and discovering a different facet of Morocco's charm.

The day began, as most do here, with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Morisco. The terrace offered stunning views of the square. Olivia would have loved this place. I opted for the *ftour beldi*, a traditional Moroccan breakfast with goat cheese, eggs, and olive oil. It was the perfect fuel for the adventures ahead. My friends and I piled into our pre-booked taxi and began the 45-minute drive towards Akchour.

The landscape transformed from the blue-washed buildings of Chefchaouen to rolling green hills dotted with small villages. It reminded me a bit of the drive up to Serra da Estrela back home in Portugal, except with a distinct Moroccan flair.

Arriving in Akchour, the air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the bustling medina. We set off on the trail to the Grande Cascade D'akchour, the main waterfall.

The hike was moderately challenging, with some rocky sections, but the scenery was well worth the effort. The trail wound along the river, crossing wooden bridges and passing by smaller cascades. I could hear the rush of water and the calls of birds, a symphony of nature that soothed my soul. It was the perfect weather for the hike, with pleasant temperatures making it ideal for outdoor activities. The sun was shining, and the chance of rain was minimal, making the conditions nearly perfect.

Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that lead us off the beaten path and into the heart of nature's embrace.

Along the way, we stopped at a few of the small stalls selling refreshments. I grabbed a freshly squeezed orange juice, its sweetness a burst of energy. It was amazing to see tables set up on top of small waterfalls where people could dine with their feet in the emerald pools.

Reaching the Grande Cascade was breathtaking. The water cascaded down the rocks into a shimmering pool below. I took out my camera, snapping photos from every angle, trying to capture the beauty of the scene. I wish Olivia were here to see this with me. She would have loved photographing this. I even dipped my toes in the cool water, a refreshing reward after the hike. I can see why many recommend visiting Akchour between March and May, as the temperature is just right and the waterfalls are at their best.

After spending a couple of hours at the waterfall, we made our way back down the trail. Hunger was starting to set in, so we decided to have lunch at Restaurant Parador, known for its amazing views of the mountains.

The restaurant was very well located. We ordered a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, and savored the flavors as we looked out at the stunning scenery. The tagine was delicious, a mix of savory and sweet, and the perfect way to end our Akchour adventure.

Back in Chefchaouen, before heading back to our Maison D'hôtes Afassi, I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs.

I stopped by Jabir shop chefchaouen, a small store I had read about.

The owner was incredibly kind and helpful, and I found a beautiful handcrafted leather bag for Olivia and some spices to bring back to Toronto. It's these little interactions that make traveling so special.

For dinner, we decided to try Bab Souk, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine.

The restaurant had a lovely view of the Grand Mosque. I ordered the soup, which was perfectly cooked and comforting. The staff was pleasant, and the atmosphere was relaxed, making it a perfect end to a busy day.

As I sit here, reflecting on the day, I feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had. Akchour was a reminder of the beauty and tranquility that can be found just outside the bustling city. It was a day of nature, good food, and good company. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Bab El Ain and Place Moulay El Mehdi, continuing my exploration of Chefchaouen's hidden corners, and perhaps find a cozy café to relax and soak in the atmosphere. I might check out Café & restaurant Meftah. But for now, I'm content with the memories of today, the sound of waterfalls, and the taste of tagine lingering in my mind. I am falling in love with Morocco more and more each day.
