Tetouan's Treasures Unveiled

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of Tetouan, a city that effortlessly blends the modern with the ancient. I was eager to explore beyond the familiar blue hues of Chefchaouen and discover the hidden gems of this nearby city. With my camera in hand and Olivia's enthusiasm by my side, we set out to uncover the cultural heart of Tetouan.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant Marisco Twins. It’s funny, even in a new city, the familiar aroma of coffee and the promise of a good meal can make you feel right at home. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast – some flavorful pastries and strong coffee, while Olivia chose a lighter, fruit-based option. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration.

A Morning of Modern Art

After breakfast, we hopped in a taxi and made our way to the Tetuan Modern Art Center. I was excited to see what contemporary Moroccan art had to offer. The center itself is housed in a magnificent Spanish-castle-like building that once served as the railway station to Ceuta, which added an extra layer of intrigue to our visit. Inside, the galleries were filled with a diverse range of artworks, from paintings and sculptures to digital installations. It was fascinating to see how Moroccan artists are interpreting their heritage and culture through a modern lens. Olivia, with her graphic designer's eye, was particularly captivated by the use of color and form in many of the pieces. We spent a good couple of hours wandering through the exhibits, discussing our favorite works and soaking in the creative atmosphere.

Wandering the Ancient Medina

Next on our list was Tetouan's old Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site. I was particularly interested in seeing Tetouan's old Medina map and navigating its labyrinthine streets. Leaving the art center, we plunged into the heart of the Medina, a world away from the city's modern boulevards. The Medina is a maze of narrow, winding alleyways, each turn revealing a new surprise – a hidden courtyard, a bustling market, or a stunning example of traditional Moroccan architecture. The blend of Moroccan and Andalusian influences was evident in the whitewashed buildings, adorned with colorful tiles and intricate wooden doors. We got wonderfully lost, letting the sights, sounds, and smells of the Medina guide us. The March sun warmed our faces as we explored, and the air was filled with the aroma of spices, fresh bread, and mint tea.

We stumbled upon a local artisan crafting intricate metalwork, his hands moving with practiced ease. He invited us into his workshop, a tiny space filled with tools and half-finished pieces. He explained his craft with such passion, and it was a privilege to witness his dedication to preserving traditional techniques. Of course, I couldn't resist purchasing a small piece as a memento of our visit. Olivia, ever the savvy shopper, haggled with good humor, securing a fair price for both of us.

Lunch at Bab Kasaba

By lunchtime, we were ravenous. We decided to try Restaurant Bab Kasaba, drawn in by its inviting atmosphere and the promise of authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with comfortable seating and a relaxed vibe. I ordered a tagine, a slow-cooked stew of meat and vegetables, while Olivia opted for a fresh salad. The food was absolutely delicious, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning of exploration.

Aromatic Discoveries

In the afternoon, we sought out La Botica De La Abuela De Aladdin, a shop I'd read about that sells handmade soaps, oils, and perfumes. As soon as we approached, the air was filled with an intoxicating blend of scents. Inside, the shop was a treasure trove of natural products, each one carefully crafted by the owner. I was fascinated by the variety of scents and ingredients, from fruity and floral to musky and exotic. Olivia, always on the lookout for unique gifts, spent ages browsing the shelves, carefully selecting a few items to take home. I ended up buying a solid perfume with a warm, spicy scent that reminded me of Évora, my hometown in Portugal. It was a perfect way to carry a little piece of Morocco with me.

Dinner at Restaurant Jbaria

As evening approached, we made our way to Restaurant Jbaria for dinner. This restaurant came highly recommended for its traditional Moroccan dishes and cozy atmosphere. We weren't disappointed. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with local ceramic tiles and intricate woodwork, creating a warm and inviting space. I ordered the lamb tagine, which was melt-in-your-mouth tender and packed with flavor. Olivia chose the couscous, a classic Moroccan dish of semolina grains served with vegetables and meat. Both dishes were exceptional, and we savored every bite. The service was impeccable, and the staff made us feel like honored guests.

Reflections on Tetouan

As we walked back to our accommodation, the city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The air was cool and crisp, and the sounds of the city had quieted down. I reflected on our day in Tetouan, a city that had surprised and delighted me at every turn. From the modern art center to the ancient Medina, from the bustling markets to the tranquil restaurants, Tetouan had offered a glimpse into the heart and soul of Morocco.

I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures in Chefchaouen. We plan to explore Khandak Semmar, a historic landmark, and Place El Haouta, a vibrant square known for its local charm. And, of course, no day is complete without sampling the local cuisine, so we'll be trying out Cafeteria Lhawta for breakfast, Restaurant Hamsa for lunch, and RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ for dinner. Olivia is particularly excited about visiting Galitos, a local bar, in the evening. It promises to be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.

I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible country and share my experiences with you all. Until tomorrow, boa noite from Morocco!

I did forget my travel adapter and rain jacket, which would have been useful today. I'll have to remember to pack them next time!
