Wandering Through Chefchaouen's Heart

Today was another incredible chapter in our Chefchaouen adventure. The city continues to surprise me with its hidden corners and vibrant culture. From exploring historical sites to indulging in local cuisine, every moment was a feast for the senses. The blue city truly lives up to its reputation, and I'm excited to share the highlights of our day.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Caféteria Lhawta. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of locals chatting animatedly filled the air. I ordered a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea, which set the perfect tone for the day. Olivia, as always, opted for something sweet, a local pastry that she declared was the best she'd had so far.

Fueled and ready, we set out to explore Khandak Semmar, a historical site that offered panoramic views of Chefchaouen. The walk up was a bit of a climb, but the scenery along the way was worth every step. The blue-washed buildings seemed to cascade down the hillside, creating a mesmerizing effect. At the top, we were rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the Rif Mountains in the distance. I spent a good hour there, snapping photos and soaking in the tranquility.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant life that unfolds within them.

Next on our itinerary was Place El Haouta, a bustling square where the heart of Chefchaouen truly beats. The square was alive with activity – vendors selling colorful wares, locals engaging in lively conversations, and children playing games. I couldn't resist browsing the stalls, picking up a few souvenirs for friends and family back in Toronto. Olivia, with her keen eye for design, found a beautiful hand-painted bowl that she plans to use as a centerpiece for our dining table. It was fascinating to observe the daily rhythms of the city, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Toronto.

For lunch, we ventured to Restaurant Hamsa, a local favorite known for its authentic Moroccan dishes. The restaurant was tucked away in a narrow alleyway, adding to its charm. We ordered a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, which was served in a clay pot. The flavors were rich and complex, a delightful blend of spices and herbs. Olivia, who is always up for trying new things, even sampled a bit of harissa, a spicy chili paste. Her reaction was priceless – a mix of surprise and delight.

In the late afternoon, we decided to take a break and unwind at Galitos, a popular bar in town. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with locals and tourists mingling freely. I ordered a local beer, while Olivia opted for a refreshing mint lemonade. We sat outside, watching the world go by and reflecting on our adventures so far. It was a perfect way to recharge before our evening plans.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ for dinner. The restaurant was housed in a beautifully restored Andalusian-style building, complete with intricate tile work and lush courtyards. The ambiance was elegant and romantic, perfect for a special evening. We indulged in a multi-course meal, sampling a variety of Moroccan delicacies. The highlight was the pastilla, a savory-sweet pie filled with pigeon meat and almonds. It was an explosion of flavors and textures, a true culinary masterpiece.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the medina, soaking in the magical atmosphere of Chefchaouen at night. The blue-washed buildings were bathed in soft light, creating a dreamlike effect. The sounds of music and laughter filled the air, adding to the festive mood. I felt a sense of contentment, knowing that I was experiencing something truly special.

Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by the way Chefchaouen seamlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a city that invites you to slow down, explore, and connect with the world around you. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with Olivia and our friends, and I look forward to discovering what tomorrow brings.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Boulevard Mohamed V and admire the colorful tiles at Tuiles colorées. We'll start our day with breakfast at Sofia, followed by lunch at Restaurant Hajji, and end with dinner at MIDO'S. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop and trying some fresh orange juice. It promises to be another day filled with new adventures and unforgettable memories.

As I sit here writing, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Chefchaouen has captured my heart, and I know that I'll carry these memories with me long after I've left. It's a reminder that the world is full of wonders, waiting to be discovered, and that the greatest adventures are often found in the most unexpected places.

I am also very happy that I did not forget my camera this time, and the photos from Khandak Semmar are amazing. I will need to remember to buy a travel adapter before my next trip!
