First Impressions of Cusco
After a long journey from Toronto, Olivia and I finally arrived in Cusco, ready to immerse ourselves in the heart of the Inca Empire. The altitude definitely hit us as we stepped off the plane, but the excitement of exploring this historic city quickly overshadowed any discomfort. Our hotel, Hotel Polo Corporativo, is conveniently located just a short distance from the city center, making it the perfect base for our adventures. We were both eager to dive into the local culture and cuisine.

Our first day was packed with exploration and culinary experiences, a perfect introduction to the wonders of Cusco. I was particularly excited, having read so much about the city's rich history and vibrant culture. Olivia, with her keen eye for design, was looking forward to soaking in the architectural marvels and colourful textiles.
Qorikancha: The Temple of the Sun
Our first stop was Qorikancha, also known as the Temple of the Sun.
As we approached, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The contrast between the Inca stonework and the Spanish colonial architecture of the Santo Domingo Convent built atop it was striking. The temple was once the most important religious site in the Inca Empire, dedicated to the worship of Inti, the Sun God.
Olivia and I learned that the walls were once covered in sheets of gold, and the courtyard was filled with golden statues. It must have been an incredible sight to behold!
I imagined the high priests residing in the temple, offering sacrifices and performing religious rites. The intricate stonework and the sheer scale of the structure were a testament to the engineering prowess of the Incas. It was fascinating to learn how the temple was also a focal point for astronomical observations, helping the Incas track the sun and the seasons. Walking through the temple, I could almost feel the echoes of the past, the weight of history pressing down on me.
Olivia was fascinated by the seamless integration of Inca and Spanish architecture. She pointed out the precision of the Inca stonework, the way the stones fit together perfectly without mortar, a technique that has allowed the structure to withstand centuries of earthquakes.
The Spanish influence was evident in the baroque architecture of the convent, a stark contrast to the simplicity and elegance of the Inca design. It was a powerful reminder of the clash of cultures that shaped modern-day Peru. I was particularly moved by the story of the children who were brought to Qorikancha as sacrifices, following sacred paths that connected the temple to other holy sites throughout the empire. It was a somber reminder of the sacrifices that were made in the name of faith and tradition.

The stones of Qorikancha whisper tales of a civilization that once revered the sun, their legacy etched in gold and stone.
Plaza Mayor de Cusco: Heart of the City
Next, we strolled towards the Plaza Mayor de Cusco, the main square of the city.
As we entered the plaza, we were immediately struck by its grandeur. The square is surrounded by stunning colonial buildings, including the Cusco Cathedral and the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús.
The Plaza Mayor has been the heart of Cusco since before the Spanish arrived in 1534. During the Inca Empire, it was known as Huacaypata, the site of important ceremonies and celebrations. The square was much larger back then, divided into two parts by the Saphy River. It was here that the Incas celebrated Inti Raymi, the festival of the sun, and honored their gods.
Olivia was captivated by the architectural details of the Cusco Cathedral. The intricate carvings, the towering spires, and the ornate facade were a testament to the skill and artistry of the Spanish colonial architects. We learned that the cathedral took nearly a century to build, its construction incorporating stones from Inca structures, a symbolic act of conquest and cultural transformation.
I was particularly interested in the history of the square as a place of rebellion and resistance. It was here that Túpac Amaru II, the leader of an indigenous uprising against Spanish rule, was executed in 1781. His defiance in the face of oppression continues to inspire Peruvians to this day. The Plaza Mayor is not just a beautiful square; it's a living testament to the complex and often turbulent history of Cusco. As we walked around, we noticed the mix of tourists and locals, all drawn to this central gathering place. Street vendors sold handicrafts and souvenirs, while families strolled leisurely, enjoying the atmosphere. It was a vibrant scene, a microcosm of the city itself.
Before the Spanish conquest, the Plaza was a swamp, which was later drained by the Incas and turned into the administrative, religious and cultural centre of the Inca capital. The victories of the Inca army were celebrated here.
Today, the Plaza is the central core of modern Cusco, surrounded by restaurants, jewelry stores and travel agencies.
As we stood in the Plaza Mayor, soaking in the atmosphere, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the past. This was a place where history had unfolded, where empires had risen and fallen, where cultures had clashed and merged. It was a place that embodied the spirit of Cusco, a city that continues to captivate and inspire all who visit. I made a mental note to find a quiet spot tomorrow to simply sit and sketch the Plaza Mayor, capturing its essence on paper.

As evening approached, we made our way to Chicha por Gaston Acurio for dinner, eager to experience the creations of Peru's most renowned chef. The restaurant had a modern and stylish decor, and the ambiance was both elegant and relaxed.
We started with the carpaccio of alpaca, a local delicacy that was surprisingly tender and flavorful. For our main courses, Olivia chose the grilled octopus, while I opted for the traditional chicharron – deep-fried belly pork. The pork was rich and succulent, although the crackling was a bit too hard for my taste. Overall, the meal was a memorable culinary experience, a testament to the creativity and skill of Gaston Acurio.
Olivia, ever the adventurous foodie, was thrilled with the alpaca carpaccio, while I appreciated the hearty flavors of the chicharron. It was a culinary adventure that perfectly complemented our historical explorations. We agreed that Peruvian cuisine was definitely something to write home about!
I was particularly impressed by the restaurant's commitment to using local ingredients, showcasing the diversity and richness of Peruvian agriculture. It was a culinary journey that not only satisfied our appetites but also deepened our appreciation for the culture and traditions of Cusco.

Textiles and Nightcaps
Before dinner, we took some time to shop for souvenirs at Centro Textil Acllas Cusco. I was looking for a traditional Peruvian hat, while Olivia wanted to find a unique piece of jewelry. The shop had a wide selection of high-quality textiles, including bags, scarves, and ponchos. We ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven blanket as a memento of our trip. Olivia found a beautiful silver bracelet with Inca designs, which she immediately wore. The colors and patterns of the textiles were mesmerizing, each piece telling a story of tradition and craftsmanship.

As we sipped our Pisco Sours, we watched the city lights twinkle below us. The atmosphere was lively, and the music was upbeat. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.
The service was great, and the staff was friendly and attentive.
I tried the Lumbus, a Pisco drink served in a bowl of ice, while Olivia had the traditional Chicha Morada.
The view from Limbus was breathtaking, offering a panoramic perspective of Cusco's cityscape. We lingered over our drinks, soaking in the atmosphere and reflecting on the day's adventures. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Saqsaywaman, the San Blas View Point and Ukukus Music Club - Bar. I am particularly interested in Saqsaywaman, the impressive Inca fortress that overlooks the city. Olivia is looking forward to exploring the San Blas neighborhood, known for its artisan workshops and bohemian vibe. We might even check out Ukukus Music Club - Bar for some live music.
For breakfast, we are going to try El Tupay Restaurant, then Pachapapa for lunch, and Nuna Raymi for dinner. We are both keen to sample more of the local cuisine and discover new flavors. I think I'll try to find a local market too, to see the fresh produce and get a sense of daily life in Cusco.
