Echoes of the Inca Empire

Today, Olivia and I delved deeper into the heart of Cusco, seeking to understand the layers of history and culture that permeate this captivating city. From the imposing ruins that whisper tales of a glorious past to the vibrant streets buzzing with modern life, Cusco continues to surprise and enchant us at every turn.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at El Tupay Restaurant. Located in Hotel Monasterio, the atmosphere was elegant, with vaults and original paintings lending an old-fashioned feel to the room. I enjoyed the Sacred Valley sauteed mushrooms to start, served with fresh, porcini and Paris mushrooms mixed with crunchy asparagus, fava beans and sun dried tomato. Olivia enjoyed the traditional Peruvian shrimp chowder. The service was excellent, as one would expect. Fully energized, we set off to explore the wonders that awaited us.

Our first stop was Saqsaywaman, a massive Inca fortress perched high above Cusco. The sheer scale of the stonework is breathtaking. Each stone, some weighing hundreds of tons, fits together with astonishing precision. As I walked along the zigzagging walls, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the Inca civilization. Olivia, ever the artist, was captivated by the textures and patterns of the stones, snapping photos from every angle.

We learned that Sacsayhuaman was built in the 15th century during the reign of Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. If Cuzco was laid out by the Inca in the shape of a puma, Sacsayhuaman represents the puma's head. It also served as a site of fierce battle between the invading Spanish and the ruling Inca in 1536. Walking through the grounds, it’s easy to imagine the echoes of that conflict, the clash of cultures, and the resilience of the Inca people.

The stones of Saqsaywaman are not just rocks; they are the keepers of stories, testaments to a civilization that defied limitations and reached for the sky.

After immersing ourselves in the grandeur of Saqsaywaman, we decided to wander through the San Blas neighborhood, known as the artisan district of Cusco. The narrow, cobblestone streets wind their way up the hillside, lined with charming shops, galleries, and cafes. It’s a steep climb, but the views are well worth the effort. As we ascended, we paused to admire the colorful buildings, each one seemingly vying for attention with its unique architecture and vibrant hues. Olivia was in her element here, drawn to the bohemian vibe and the creative energy that permeated the air.

We eventually reached the San Blas View Point, which offered a panoramic vista of Cusco spread out below us. The city seemed to pulse with life, a tapestry of red-tiled roofs, bustling plazas, and verdant hills. From this vantage point, we could appreciate the city's layout and its seamless integration with the surrounding landscape. We took some time to simply soak in the view, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty together. We chatted with a local vendor selling handmade jewelry, admiring her intricate designs and learning about the symbolism behind each piece. These encounters, these small connections with the people of Cusco, are what make our travels so enriching.

Lunch was at Pachapapa, a restaurant nestled in the heart of San Blas. This place is known for its traditional Cusquenian cuisine, and the atmosphere is as authentic as the food. We sat in the outdoor courtyard, surrounded by colorful decor and the aroma of wood-fired ovens. Olivia, ever adventurous, ordered the guinea pig, a local delicacy. I opted for the lamb shoulder, roasted to perfection in the traditional oven. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, a testament to the fresh, local ingredients and the culinary expertise of the chefs. We also tried the homemade lemonade, which was refreshing and the perfect accompaniment to our meal.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to explore the nightlife Cusco had to offer. We ventured into Ukukus Music Club - Bar. The place was buzzing with energy, a mix of locals and tourists all drawn by the promise of live music and good company. We found a cozy spot near the stage and ordered a couple of Pisco Sours, the national drink of Peru. The band started playing a mix of traditional Peruvian tunes and contemporary rock, and soon the dance floor was packed. Olivia, never one to shy away from a dance, pulled me onto the floor, and we spent the next hour twirling and laughing, lost in the rhythm of the music.

“Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” – Miriam Beard

The atmosphere at Ukukus was electric. The walls were adorned with colorful local art, adding to the vibrant ambiance. As we walked back to Hotel Polo Corporativo, the city was quiet. The stars twinkled above us, casting a soft glow on the cobblestone streets. We reflected on the day, on the ancient stones of Saqsaywaman, the bohemian vibes of San Blas, the delicious food, and the infectious music. Cusco had once again exceeded our expectations, revealing new layers of its rich tapestry.
