A Day of Legends and Landscapes

Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Isafjordur. I set out to explore the legendary Troll Seat and the serene Valagil Waterfall, eager to soak in the local culture and stunning vistas. It was a day of moderate hiking, delicious food, and a touch of Icelandic charm.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kaffihús Bakarans. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee was the perfect start to a day of exploration. I savored a traditional Icelandic pastry, eager to fuel up for the adventures ahead. The cafe was cozy, filled with locals chatting and enjoying their morning routines. It felt like a warm welcome into the heart of Isafjordur.

First on the agenda was Naustahvilft, also known as the Troll Seat. The drive there was breathtaking, with the fjord stretching out beside me, framed by towering mountains. I parked near the airport and began the ascent. The hike was short but steep, definitely a leg-burner, but the views kept me motivated. As I climbed, I couldn't help but imagine the troll of local legend, pausing here on the mountainside.

Reaching the top, I was rewarded with a panoramic view of Isafjordur. The town looked like a miniature village nestled in the fjord, and the surrounding mountains painted a dramatic backdrop. I took some time to simply sit and absorb the scenery, feeling a sense of accomplishment and awe. The wind was bracing, a reminder of Iceland's wild spirit.

Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are the ones that challenge you physically, only to gift you with unparalleled beauty and a deeper connection to the land.

The legend of the Troll Seat says that a troll, hurrying to avoid the sunlight, rested here, leaving an imprint on the mountain. Whether it's folklore or a geological formation from the last Ice Age, the Troll Seat is a sight to behold. I signed the guest book at the top, a small act of connection with the many travelers who had come before me.

After descending from the Troll Seat, I drove towards Álftafjörður to find Valagil Waterfall. The drive itself was a treat, winding through the rugged landscape of the Westfjords. Arriving at the trailhead, I parked and began the hike.

The trail to Valagil was mostly flat, making for a pleasant walk through meadows and along the river Seljalandsa. The air was crisp and clean, and the only sounds were the rushing water and the occasional bird call. It was a peaceful escape, a chance to clear my head and connect with nature. I remembered I had forgotten my binoculars, something I had written down as an essential for the trip. Note to self: make better use of the travel journal!

As I approached the waterfall, the sound of the cascading water grew louder. The Valagil Waterfall is hidden in a gorge, adding to its mystique. The water tumbled down the rocks in multiple tiers, creating a stunning display of natural beauty. I crossed a small wooden bridge for a better view, marveling at the power and grace of the falls.

The origin of the name Valagil is debated; some say it comes from the Icelandic word for falcon, as they nest in the area, while others believe it is named after a woman who fell into the gorge. Regardless of its origin, the waterfall is a hidden gem worth the hike.

For lunch, I stopped at Logn, restaurant & bar, located in Hótel Ísafjörður. I enjoyed a delicious meal, savoring local ingredients and the restaurant's cozy atmosphere. It was a welcome break after a day of hiking, and I appreciated the chance to relax and recharge.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore the town a bit more. I wandered along the harbor, watching the fishing boats come and go. The colorful buildings and the backdrop of the mountains created a picturesque scene. I felt a sense of tranquility and contentment, grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique corner of the world.

For dinner, I chose Húsið, a restaurant known for its fresh entrees and cozy atmosphere. I opted for the seafood soup, a local favorite, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. I learned that on weekends, Húsið turns into a nightclub, a testament to Isafjordur's vibrant culture.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Dokkan Brugghús, Isafjordur's first craft brewery. The brewery had a lively, cozy atmosphere. I sampled a few of their locally brewed beers, each with its own unique flavor profile. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Dokkan Brugghús is a family-run business that started in 2017, and their passion for craft beer is evident in every sip. I chatted with some locals and fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter. It was a reminder of the connections that travel can create.

I learned that Dokkan utilizes the pristine artesian spring water sourced from the remote mountains of the Westfjords, which is naturally filtered through a 14-million-year-old volcanic lava pile. No wonder the beer tasted so good!

As I walked back to Hótel Ísafjörður, the stars were beginning to emerge, twinkling in the clear Icelandic sky. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day, for the beauty of Isafjordur, and for the opportunity to explore this incredible place on my own. I thought about Olivia and how much she would have loved this adventure.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve [Day 3 Itinerary]. I've heard it's a place of unparalleled beauty and solitude, and I'm excited to see what it has in store. Before that, I'll enjoy breakfast at the hotel [Day 3 Itinerary]. I might also check out Geðræktarmiðstöðin Vesturafl - Nytjamarkaður, a local shop [Day 3 Itinerary]. For lunch, I'm thinking of trying Heimabyggð, and for dinner, Jötunn restaurant [Day 3 Itinerary]. It's going to be another exciting day!

Back at the hotel, I took advantage of the comfortable lounge area to charge my phone and jot down some notes about the day. I also took the time to plan out my itinerary for tomorrow, excited about the adventures that await me.

Before drifting off to sleep, I raised a glass to Isafjordur, to trolls and waterfalls, and to the magic of solo travel. What a day!
