Today, I embarked on a journey back in time, tracing the footsteps of emperors and scholars through the ancient Roman structures nestled in the heart of Athens. It's fascinating how the remnants of a bygone era can still resonate so powerfully, offering glimpses into a world where philosophy and power intertwined. As I wandered through these historical sites, I couldn't help but reflect on the enduring legacy of both the Roman and Greek civilizations, and how their stories continue to shape our understanding of the world.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Omorphi Polis. The reviews I'd read online spoke of its delicious pastries and strong coffee, a perfect way to fuel up before diving into a day of historical exploration. The convenient location made it easy to reach, and the homey atmosphere was just what I needed to start my day on a positive note. I savored a traditional Greek pastry, its flaky layers filled with a sweet cream, and sipped my coffee, feeling the energy slowly returning after another fulfilling day in Athens.

With renewed vigor, I set off to explore the Roman Forum of Athens (Roman Agora). Situated near the Ancient Agora, it was fascinating to compare the two, each representing a different era in Athens' rich history. The Roman Forum, built with funds from Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus, served as the city's commercial hub during the Roman period. As I walked through the partially excavated site, I tried to imagine the bustling marketplace it once was, filled with merchants, shoppers, and the vibrant energy of daily life.

The Tower of the Winds, a remarkably well-preserved octagonal monument, was a particular highlight. This ancient clock, weather vane, sundial, and compass all in one showcased the ingenuity of the ancient Greeks and Romans. I spent some time admiring the friezes depicting the eight winds of Greek mythology, each figure rendered with impressive detail and artistry. It's incredible to think that this structure has stood for over two thousand years, a silent witness to the ebb and flow of history.

Next on my itinerary was Hadrian's Library, a monumental building constructed by Roman Emperor Hadrian in 132 AD. Hadrian, a great admirer of Greek culture, sought to revitalize Athens and establish it as a cultural center of the Roman Empire. The library, once the largest in Athens, housed an extensive collection of scrolls and manuscripts, serving as a hub for scholars and intellectuals.

As I wandered through the ruins, I marveled at the grand scale of the complex. It was easy to see why Pausanias described it as a building with 100 columns of Phrygian marble, with halls with painted ceilings, alabaster walls, and niches with statues, in which books were kept.

It's fascinating to see how the Library suffered an eventful and chequered history. It was seriously damaged by the Herulian invasion of 267 and repaired by the prefect Herculius in 407–412. The library was later incorporated into the Roman city walls. During Byzantine times, three churches were built at the site, the remains of which are preserved: a tetraconch (5th century) a three-aisled basilica (7th century), and a simple cathedral (12th century), which was the first cathedral of the city, known as Megali Panagia.

I settled into a cozy corner, ordered a signature cocktail, and savored the moment. The ambiance was perfect – a blend of Western and Eastern aesthetics, with vintage elements and art deco lighting.

It was a bit more upscale than the other places I'd visited today, but I was in the mood for a special meal. Dopios exceeded my expectations. The menu was a delightful mix of traditional Greek flavors with a modern twist. I ordered a selection of small plates to share, each one a culinary masterpiece. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a perfect ending to a day of historical exploration.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the National Historical Museum - Old Parliament House and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, continuing my exploration of Athens' rich history and culture. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at the Nomad Concept Store, picking up a few souvenirs for Olivia and myself. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, the echoes of Rome resonating in my mind.

As I prepare for the next leg of my solo adventure, I carry with me the lessons and insights gained from today's journey, ready to embrace whatever new experiences await.

I am so glad I decided to take this trip, even though I miss Olivia dearly. I know she would have loved to experience these sites with me, but I also know that she is supporting me from afar.
