A Day Amongst the Ancients

Today was a day of wandering, a day of getting lost and found in the ancient heart of Athens. It’s amazing how a city can hold so much history within a few square kilometers, and how each neighborhood can tell a different story. I set out this morning with a simple plan: to explore Plaka, Anafiotika, and the Monastiraki Flea Market. What I discovered was more than just sights; it was a feeling, a sense of connection to the past that resonated deep within me.



My day began with breakfast at Restaurant Scholarhio in Plaka. The morning air was still crisp, carrying the scent of bougainvillea and freshly baked bread. I opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, a simple yet satisfying start to the day. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and the staff was very friendly. I read some online reviews that mentioned the gracious staff and reasonable prices, and I can attest to that. It was the perfect spot to fuel up before diving into the labyrinthine streets of Plaka.

Plaka itself is a maze of narrow streets, lined with shops selling everything from souvenirs to handmade crafts. It’s touristy, yes, but it’s also undeniably charming. As I wandered, I stumbled upon ancient ruins tucked between modern buildings, a testament to the city's layered history. There was a buzz about the place with tourists and locals alike going about their day. I even saw flyers advertising a serenade in the streets of Plaka, but unfortunately, it was scheduled for a later date. Still, it added to the romantic atmosphere of the neighborhood.

In the heart of Athens, history isn't just something you read about; it's something you live and breathe with every step you take.

From Plaka, I ventured towards Anafiotika, a hidden gem tucked away on the slopes of the Acropolis. This tiny neighborhood feels like a Cycladic island village transported to the heart of Athens. The whitewashed houses, narrow alleyways, and bougainvillea-filled courtyards create a tranquil escape from the bustling city below. I learned that Anafiotika was built in the 19th century by craftsmen from the island of Anafi, who came to Athens to work on the refurbishment of King Othon's Palace. They built their homes in the style of their island, and the result is a unique and picturesque neighborhood that feels worlds away from the city.

As I climbed the steps of Anafiotika, I was struck by the silence. It was a stark contrast to the noise of Plaka, and it felt like I had stepped back in time. I passed two old Byzantine churches, Agios Georgios tou Vrachou and Agios Symeon, each a testament to the neighborhood's rich history. From the higher points of Anafiotika, I could see the city stretching out before me, a sprawling metropolis that seemed both ancient and modern at the same time.



After exploring Anafiotika, I made my way to the Monastiraki Flea Market. This bustling marketplace is a sensory overload, a chaotic mix of sights, sounds, and smells. Stalls overflowed with everything imaginable, from antiques and vintage clothing to leather goods and souvenirs. It was a treasure trove for bargain hunters and anyone looking for something unique. The market is open every day, but I had read that Sunday is the best day to visit, when more stalls are set up and the atmosphere is even more vibrant. However, today being Thursday, it was still quite lively.

I wandered through the market, taking in the sights and sounds. Vendors called out to me, trying to entice me to buy their wares. I saw old books, vintage records, and antique furniture. I even saw a stall selling traditional Greek musical instruments. I resisted the urge to buy anything, but I couldn't help but admire the variety and the energy of the place. The Monastiraki Flea Market is more than just a place to shop; it's a cultural experience, a glimpse into the heart and soul of Athens.



For lunch, I stopped at Arcadia Restaurant near the Acropolis Museum. I had read online that it was an authentic Greek restaurant with recipes from the Arcadia region. I decided to try the moussaka, a classic Greek dish of eggplant, potatoes, and meat sauce topped with béchamel. It was delicious, hearty, and flavorful. The restaurant was decorated in a traditional style, and the staff was friendly and attentive. As I enjoyed my meal, I watched the world go by, soaking in the atmosphere of this historic city.

After lunch, I did a little shopping at Forget Me Not, a store I found that sells unique Greek products. I picked up a few small gifts for Olivia and some local honey for myself. It’s always nice to bring a little piece of the place back home with me. Although Olivia couldn't join me on this trip, I always make sure to find something special for her.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Hytra Restaurant & Bar for dinner. This Michelin-starred restaurant is located on the rooftop of the Onassis Cultural Centre, offering stunning views of the city. I had made a reservation in advance, and I was looking forward to experiencing their modern take on Greek cuisine. I was also excited because I had read about their extensive wine list, which features a selection of Greek and international wines.

The service was attentive and knowledgeable, and the sommelier helped me choose the perfect wine to complement each course.



Hytra certainly lived up to its reputation. The standout dishes for me were the seafood courses, particularly the grilled octopus with fava beans and the sea bass with lemon and herbs. The restaurant has earned its Michelin star, offering a creative and refined interpretation of Greek flavors. It was a fitting end to a day of exploring the ancient heart of Athens.



Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Roman Forum of Athens and Hadrian's Library, continuing my exploration of the city's rich history. I might also check out Drunk Sinatra, a bar that came recommended for a nightcap. I’m looking forward to another day of discovery, another day of getting lost and found in this amazing city.



As I walked back to The Editor Hotel, I reflected on the day. I had wandered through ancient neighborhoods, explored bustling markets, and dined on exquisite cuisine. I had connected with the past and experienced the present. Athens had captured my heart, and I knew that I would never forget this solo adventure. I even managed to avoid getting sunburned, despite forgetting my sunscreen and hat. I’ll be sure to pack those tomorrow!
