Day 4: A Day of Art and Serenity in Urbino: Discovering Hidden Gems
Explore Urbino's Casa dei Barocci, Chiesa di San Bernardino, and Museo Lapidario for a day of art, history, and tranquil beauty.
Unveiling Urbino's Artistic Soul
Today was a day of quiet exploration, a chance to peel back another layer of Urbino's rich artistic heritage. Away from the bustling Piazza della Repubblica, I sought out some of the city's lesser-known treasures, places where the spirit of the Renaissance still whispers in the stones. It was a day for reflection, for savoring the details, and for letting the art speak for itself.
Our day began, as most do here, with a delightful breakfast at Caffè del Teatro. The cafe's lively atmosphere and tasty piadinas were the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a strong espresso while Fatima opted for a cappuccino. We shared a flaky pastry, still warm from the oven, as we discussed our plans. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day, and Caffè del Teatro never disappoints.
First on our list was the Casa dei Barocci. It's always fascinating to peek into the lives of artists, to see where they lived and created. Although, to be honest, I was hoping to see more of the artist's work on display. I was hoping to learn more about his life, his techniques, and his artistic journey. I guess I'll need to do some more research on my own. I did enjoy seeing the architecture of the building itself. The building had a certain charm to it that made me feel like I was stepping back in time.

From there, we ventured to the Chiesa di San Bernardino, a Franciscan church located on a hill outside the town. The walk itself was a treat, offering panoramic views of Urbino and the surrounding countryside. The church was built by Federico da Montefeltro, intended as a Ducal Mausoleum. The church’s exterior, made of brick, is simple yet elegant, reflecting the clarity of Renaissance architecture. Inside, the cenotaphs of Dukes Federico and Guidobaldo da Montefeltro stood as solemn reminders of the city's history. The church was damaged by an earthquake in 1741, which truncated the bell tower. Despite the damage, the church’s architectural clarity, typical of the Urbino Renaissance, remained striking.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next, we immersed ourselves in history at the Museo Lapidario. This hidden gem houses a rich epigraphic collection, featuring ancient stone artifacts and inscriptions. Originally founded by Cardinal Giovan Francesco Stoppani, the museum showcases a diverse array of sculptures and relics dating back to Roman times. The collection includes inscriptions from Rome, burial markers, statues, and bas-reliefs. The museum's layout, with the stones displayed on mirrors, added a unique dimension to the experience.

By lunchtime, we were ready for a good meal. We chose Portanova Ristorante in Urbino. The restaurant is known for its Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. Fatima and I shared a plate of the seafood risotto, and it was absolutely delicious. The restaurant has a Michelin selection recognition. The ambiance was cozy, and the service was excellent.

With the afternoon sun mellowing, we indulged in a bit of shopping at Maroccini - Articoli da Regalo & Liste Nozze. It’s a charming little shop filled with unique gifts and wedding favors. I picked up a few small souvenirs for the kids—a hand-painted ceramic ornament for Sheila and a miniature wooden car for Nelson. It’s always nice to bring back something that captures the essence of a place.

As evening approached, we found ourselves drawn to the Urbino Jazz Club. Although there weren't any scheduled events for the night, we decided to stop by for a drink and soak in the atmosphere. The club is known for its vibrant music scene and attracts both local and international talent. Sipping on a glass of local wine, I imagined the club filled with the sounds of smooth saxophone solos and energetic ensemble pieces. It’s definitely a place I’d like to visit again during a live performance. The Urbino Jazz Club is a cultural gem in Urbino, celebrating jazz traditions and bringing people together.

For dinner, we chose Il Cortegiano Ristorante. The restaurant is known for its traditional Italian cuisine and elegant setting. I opted for the pappardelle, while Fatima enjoyed the cacio e pepe. The prices were reasonable, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxing evening. The restaurant is located in the historic center, offering beautiful views. As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Urbino's artistic soul. Each location offered a unique perspective, a different way to connect with the city's history and culture. It’s these quieter moments, away from the main tourist trails, that often leave the most lasting impressions.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit the Teatro Comunale D. Bramante, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, and Piazza Mercatale. I’m particularly excited to see the cathedral and learn more about its history. We'll also explore some local shops, including Emporio Gamba, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Art Cafè Urbino.
Until tomorrow, *adeus* from Urbino!
