Urbino's Friday Charm

Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Urbino's cultural and historical tapestry. From the architectural marvels to the vibrant local life, every moment was a discovery. Join me as I recount the day's adventures, filled with artistic wonders, spiritual reflections, and culinary delights.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Raffaello. I ordered a cappuccino and a *cornetto*, the Italian version of a croissant. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. Sipping my coffee, I watched as locals greeted each other, their animated conversations filling the air. It reminded me of the bustling mornings back in Chibuto, where the market was always a hive of activity. Fatima would have loved this place; she always appreciates a good coffee and a pastry. After breakfast, we set out to explore the Teatro Comunale D. Bramante.

The Teatro Comunale D. Bramante, a gem in Urbania, is not actually in Urbino, as I initially thought, but the thought of a 19th-century Neoclassical theater with a reddish exterior was intriguing. Designed by Ercole Salmi, it was inaugurated in 1864 with Verdi's *Il Trovatore*. I made a note to perhaps visit Urbania another time to fully appreciate this architectural beauty. It reminded me of the community theater back in Edmonton, where Nelson once played a small role in a school production. He was so nervous, but Fatima and I were bursting with pride. It's these small moments that make life so rich and memorable. While I didn't get to see it today, I've added it to my list for future explorations in the region. The idea of a horseshoe-shaped interior with 44 stages is quite impressive.

Next on our itinerary was the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. As we approached, the sheer scale of the cathedral was breathtaking. Originally built in 1021, it has undergone several reconstructions, most notably after the devastating earthquake of 1789. The Neoclassical style, a result of the rebuilding efforts, is imposing and beautiful. Inside, the cathedral was a sanctuary of art and history. The dome, adorned with roundels depicting the Four Evangelists, was particularly striking. The main altarpiece, created by Christopher Unterberger, depicts the Madonna between the city's patron saints. I lit a candle for my family, a silent prayer for their health and happiness. The cathedral's history, from its early medieval origins to its 15th-century reconstruction under Duke Federico da Montefeltro, is a testament to Urbino's enduring cultural significance.

Urbino’s charm lies not just in its historical monuments, but in the vibrant life that pulses through its piazzas and streets.

Leaving the serene atmosphere of the cathedral, we headed to Piazza Mercatale. This square is the vibrant heart of Urbino, a place where locals and tourists mingle, and the essence of Italian culture is palpable. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, their Renaissance architecture providing a stunning backdrop. There was no specific event taking place today, but the atmosphere was lively. Local artisans displayed their crafts, adding to the square's unique charm. I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic tile as a souvenir for Fatima. She loves collecting unique pieces for our home. The air was filled with the aroma of local delicacies, and the numerous cafes and eateries were bustling with activity. I imagined what it must have been like centuries ago, with merchants hawking their wares and townsfolk exchanging news. The square truly felt like a living, breathing testament to Urbino's rich history.

For lunch, we stopped at La Trattoria del Leone' di Lucarini Mauro. The *trattoria* was cozy and inviting, with a menu featuring traditional dishes from the Marche region. I decided to try the *vincisgrassi*, a local version of lasagna, and it was absolutely divine. The rich, savory flavors were a delight to my taste buds. We shared stories and laughter, making the meal even more enjoyable. It was a perfect example of how food can bring people together, a lesson I often try to replicate when cooking Mozambican cuisine for my family back in Edmonton. I made a mental note to try and recreate the *vincisgrassi* when I got home, though I doubted I could match the authenticity of the *trattoria*'s version.

After lunch, we took some time to explore Emporio Gamba, a local shop known for its stylish clothing. While I'm not much of a fashion enthusiast, I appreciated the blend of contemporary and classic Italian styles. Fatima, with her keen eye for fashion, would have loved browsing through the racks. I considered buying her a scarf or a small accessory, but decided to wait until tomorrow when we visit Liliana Martinez - Artigianato Artistico. I'm sure I'll find something unique and special there. The shop was a reflection of Urbino itself – timeless and elegant.

As the afternoon waned, we sought refuge at Art Cafè Urbino. This *café* is known for its unique blend of quality cocktails, entertainment, contemporary art, and photography. It's a LocArt, a fusion of aesthetic taste and relaxation. The interior design, with its exposed brick walls, comfortable leather sofas, and soft lighting, was both intimate and inviting. I ordered a *caffè* and relaxed, soaking in the atmosphere. The music was a mix of genres, creating a vibrant yet laid-back vibe. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. I could easily imagine spending hours here, sipping coffee, reading a book, and watching the world go by. We stayed there for a couple of hours, chatting and enjoying the ambiance. It reminded me of the *cafés* in Maputo, where people gather to discuss politics, art, and life in general.

For dinner, we chose Ristorante Taverna La Fornarina. The *taverna* had a rustic charm, with exposed wooden beams and walls adorned with local art. The menu featured traditional dishes, and I opted for the *crescia*, a flatbread typical of the region. It was served with a variety of toppings, including *prosciutto*, cheese, and vegetables. The flavors were simple yet satisfying, a true taste of the Marche region. The atmosphere was cozy and convivial, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. It was a perfect way to end our day in Urbino, a celebration of food, culture, and friendship. As we ate, we discussed our plans for tomorrow, which include visiting Republic Square, the Monument to Raphael, and the Cattedrale dei Santi Mariano e Giacomo. I'm particularly excited about seeing the Monument to Raphael, as I've always admired his work. We also plan to visit Liliana Martinez - Artigianato Artistico, a shop I'm sure Fatima would adore, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Underground PUB.
