Exploring the Renaissance Charm of Urbino with Friends

Farewell, Urbino!

As my time in Urbino draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had over the past week. Today was all about soaking in the natural beauty and historical wonders that surround this Renaissance gem. It’s amazing how a place can capture your heart, and Urbino has certainly done that for me.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Raffaello. I savored a cappuccino and a pastry, enjoying the cafe's cozy atmosphere. It’s a great spot to start the day, and the staff were so friendly, making us feel right at home. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore the Parco Naturale Monte San Bartolo.

The drive to Parco Naturale Monte San Bartolo was stunning. The rolling hills and picturesque landscapes reminded me of the beauty of Mozambique, although the vegetation was quite different. I shared stories with my friends about the landscapes of my homeland, and they were captivated. As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The park itself is a gem, offering panoramic vistas of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding countryside. We hiked along one of the trails, breathing in the fresh air and marveling at the diverse flora and fauna. The September weather was perfect – sunny and mild, ideal for a leisurely walk. I made sure to capture plenty of photos, wanting to preserve these views forever. It was a refreshing escape, a chance to connect with nature before heading back to the city.

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.

After our nature excursion, we drove to Gradara to visit the Castello di Gradara.

This medieval castle is steeped in history and legend, and I was eager to explore its ancient walls. As we approached, the castle loomed majestically on the hilltop, a testament to its strategic importance throughout the centuries. We took a guided tour, learning about the castle's fascinating past and the famous figures who had once walked its halls. The story of Paolo and Francesca, immortalized by Dante, added a romantic yet tragic layer to the experience. Walking through the castle, I could almost feel the echoes of the past, imagining the knights, nobles, and battles that had shaped its destiny. The views from the ramparts were incredible, stretching across the rolling hills and towards the Adriatic coast. The craftsmanship of the castle was impressive, and I was particularly struck by the intricate details of the stonework. I thought about my son, Nelson, and how he would have loved exploring such a place, lost in a world of knights and dragons.

For lunch, we stopped at Ristorante Pizzeria Ragno d'oro Urbino.

This place came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. We sat outside, enjoying the pleasant September weather and the lively atmosphere of the town. I ordered a pizza, eager to taste the local flavors. The pizza was delicious, with a crispy crust and fresh toppings. My friends tried different pasta dishes, and everyone was happy with their choices. The service was friendly and efficient, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge after a morning of exploration. I even managed to practice my Italian with the waiter, a small victory that made me feel more connected to the local culture.

In the afternoon, we strolled through the streets of Urbino, soaking in the city's unique charm. We visited Star Shop Urbino, a comic book store that caught my eye.

It was a fun place to browse, filled with colorful comics and memorabilia. Although I am not a huge comic book fan, I found myself intrigued by the artistry and creativity on display. It was a reminder that art comes in many forms, and there is something for everyone to appreciate. I picked up a small souvenir for my daughter, Sheila, knowing she would love the colorful characters. We also spent some time wandering through the local shops, admiring the handcrafted goods and local products. I bought a few small gifts for Fatima and the kids, wanting to bring back a piece of Urbino for them.

As the day wound down, we gathered for a final dinner at Osteria Gula - Urbino (pu).

This cozy osteria offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for a farewell meal. I ordered a traditional dish, eager to savor the authentic flavors of the region. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. We shared stories and memories from our trip, laughing and reminiscing about our adventures. It was a bittersweet moment, knowing that our time in Urbino was coming to an end. As we savored our meal, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared and the friendships we had strengthened.

After dinner, we decided to check out ENJOY Disco Urbino.

The music was great, and the atmosphere was electric. I even tried my hand at some dance moves, much to the amusement of my friends. It was a fun and lighthearted way to end our trip, a final celebration of our time in Urbino. As the night wore on, we said our goodbyes and headed back to our guesthouse, tired but happy.

Reflecting on this trip, I realize how much Urbino has touched me. The Renaissance architecture, the vibrant culture, and the stunning landscapes have left an indelible mark on my soul. I came here seeking history and beauty, and I found so much more. I discovered a sense of connection to the past, a deeper appreciation for art and culture, and a renewed sense of wonder for the world around me. I leave Urbino with a heart full of memories and a longing to return someday.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home, filled with stories to tell and memories to cherish. Urbino, you have been a wonderful host. Thank you for the memories!

I can’t wait to share all these experiences with Fatima and the kids. Maybe one day, we’ll all come back here together and explore this amazing place as a family. Until then, Urbino will always hold a special place in my heart. I am also excited to get back to Edmonton and share some of the dishes I have tasted here with friends and family. I am particularly excited to try and replicate the pizza from Ristorante Pizzeria Ragno d'oro Urbino. I am sure Nelson will be very happy.

This trip has also reinforced the importance of taking time for myself, for exploring new places, and for connecting with different cultures. It’s a reminder that life is about more than just work and responsibilities; it’s about experiencing the world and creating memories that will last a lifetime. I am grateful for the opportunity to have embarked on this adventure, and I look forward to many more journeys in the future.

As I pack my bags and prepare to leave, I carry with me the spirit of Urbino, a spirit of creativity, beauty, and resilience. It’s a spirit that I hope to carry with me always, inspiring me to live each day to the fullest and to embrace the wonders of the world.
