A Day of Discovery in Urbino

Today, on the seventh day of our Italian adventure, I felt a deep connection to Urbino. It wasn't just about seeing the sights; it was about feeling the pulse of this Renaissance city, about uncovering the stories etched into its stones. I was excited to see what hidden corners Urbino had in store for me and my friends today.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Il Grottino. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the cozy space. I ordered a simple cornetto and cappuccino, savoring each bite and sip as I watched the town slowly awaken outside the window. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day. Feeling energized, we set off to meet our guide from Guide Turistiche Urbino. Enrica, our guide, was a font of knowledge, her passion for Urbino infectious. She led us through the intricate streets, sharing stories that brought the city's history to life. I was particularly captivated by her tales of the powerful Montefeltro family and their influence on Urbino's artistic and cultural development.

Our first stop was the Oratorio della Grotta, a hidden gem beneath the Duomo. Descending into the dimly lit chambers, I felt as though I was stepping back in time. The Oratorio is comprised of four chapels, each adorned with unique artwork and steeped in history. Enrica explained that the Oratorio was once used as a crypt and a place of devotion, its walls echoing with centuries of prayers and contemplation. The chapels, each dedicated to a different stage of Christ's life, were mesmerizing. The Chapel of the Nativity, with Emilio Taruffi's painting of the Adoration of the Shepherds, was particularly striking. The atmosphere was heavy with history, a palpable sense of the past lingering in the cool, stone chambers.

Urbino is not just a city to be seen, but a story to be lived.

Emerging from the Oratorio, blinking in the sunlight, we made our way to Palazzo Albani. This Renaissance palace, now part of the University of Urbino, boasts a fascinating history. Built in the 15th century and later renovated by Luigi Vanvitelli, the palace showcases a blend of architectural styles. We explored the courtyards and admired the stucco work and frescoes, imagining the palace in its heyday, filled with nobles and artists. It was amazing to think that this palace was once home to the Albani family and later served as a pin factory. Today, it houses university offices and restoration laboratories, a testament to Urbino's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.

For lunch, we indulged in a delicious meal at Ristorante Il Castello. The restaurant's warm ambiance and traditional dishes were a welcome treat after a morning of exploring. I opted for the passatelli, a local pasta specialty, while my friends tried the spaghetti alla carbonara. Each dish was a burst of flavor, a true celebration of Italian cuisine. The tiramisu was the perfect ending to a satisfying meal.

After lunch, we decided to explore Urbino's modern side. We stopped by Tempio Verde Cannabis Store, a local shop selling cannabis light products. It was interesting to see how this modern business fit into the historical context of Urbino. We chatted with the owner, who explained the benefits of cannabis light and the misconceptions surrounding it. It was an eye-opening experience, a reminder that Urbino is a city that embraces both its past and its present.

As evening approached, we found ourselves drawn to Caffè del Teatro, a charming bar with a lively atmosphere. We sipped on Aperol spritzes, enjoying the stunning views of the city as the sun began to set. The Caffè del Teatro has a long history, dating back to 1841, and is known for its traditional Marchigiani dishes and its location. The Caffè is near the Rampa Elicoidale. Laughter and conversation filled the air as we shared stories and reflected on our day's adventures. It was the perfect way to end our day of discovery.

For our final dinner in Urbino, we chose Ristorante San Giovanni Urbino. Housed in a 16th-century palace, the restaurant exudes old-world charm. The menu featured traditional dishes from the region, and I decided to try the coniglio in porchetta, a local rabbit specialty. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to authentic cuisine. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

As I walked back to our guesthouse, the sounds of Urbino slowly fading into the night, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude. This city had welcomed me with open arms, revealing its hidden gems and sharing its stories. I was also grateful for the time spent with my friends. This trip has brought us closer together, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Tomorrow, we leave Urbino to visit Parco Naturale Monte San Bartolo and Castello di Gradara. I'm excited to see what adventures await us on the final day of our Italian journey. It's hard to believe our trip is almost over. I am already looking forward to planning my next trip, maybe back to Mozambique, to show Fatima and the kids where I grew up. I want them to experience the vibrant culture, the delicious food, and the warm hospitality of my homeland. Perhaps we'll even visit Chibuto, my birth city. It would be an incredible experience to share my roots with my family.

I am so grateful for this journey and the opportunity to experience the magic of Urbino. It's a city that will forever hold a special place in my heart.
