A Day of Discovery in Vilanculos
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Vilanculos, a place that holds so much of my heritage. I wanted to share this connection with Fatima and the kids, showing them the layers of history, art, and flavors that make this coastal town so special. From exploring ancient trading routes to savoring local cuisine, it was a day filled with learning, laughter, and a deeper understanding of where I come from.
Our morning started with a delightful breakfast at the Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel. The hotel is known for including a brilliant breakfast during your stay. Chef Ildo and the kitchen team serve local options and fresh fruit smoothies. The views were stunning, overlooking the Bazaruto Archipelago, and the fresh fruit smoothies were a hit with Nelson and Sheila. It's these simple moments, sharing good food and beautiful scenery with my family, that make these trips so memorable.

After breakfast, we set off to Chibuene, an archaeological site just a short drive south of Vilanculos. This site is incredibly significant as it was once a major trading port, linking the interior of southern Africa with the Indian Ocean trade network. As we walked around, I tried to imagine what it must have been like centuries ago, with merchants from different lands exchanging goods.

Chibuene's history is fascinating. It was occupied in two phases, the first around the late first millennium AD and the second around 1450, contemporaneous with the Great Zimbabwe civilization. During both periods, it thrived as a trading settlement, with goods like glass beads, ceramics, and bottle fragments passing through its port. The kids were intrigued by the stories of ancient structures and metallurgy, trying to picture the gold being melted in crucibles for trade with Great Zimbabwe. I explained how the village thrived due to its coastal location, providing access to seafood and fresh water, which allowed the villagers to gather in larger numbers. It’s amazing to think that Chibuene was the most southern trading port to have participated in the Indian Ocean Trade network.
I remember reading about how the trade networks shifted, causing a decline in Chibuene's significance, and how the site transitioned to an agricultural and herding economy. It's a powerful reminder of how economies and societies evolve over time. The kids were excited to see the layers of shells and sand covering beads and pot shards.
Sometimes, the most profound connections are found in the quiet whispers of the past.
Next on our itinerary was a visit to Vila do Paraiso. This place is stunning, nestled along the coastline with clear blue waters. Although we didn't stay there, we explored the grounds and learned about its unique offerings. Vila do Paraiso offers self-catering options, with house butlers who can cook and do laundry. The villas are well-equipped with cutlery, crockery, and linen. Nelson was particularly thrilled to hear about the Supercat boats available for hire, perfect for snorkeling and island hopping. Fatima was impressed with the private splash pools in each villa, imagining relaxing afternoons overlooking the Indian Ocean.

For lunch, we decided to try Fazila Take Away, a local spot known for its authentic Mozambican cuisine. This place is located right on the beach. We ordered grilled chicken, kebabs, and grilled fish. The relaxed atmosphere was perfect for a quick and tasty meal. The food was flavorful, and it gave us a real taste of the local culinary scene.

After lunch, we headed to Vila Art - Sergio, a gift shop in the heart of Vilanculos. This shop showcases the artistic heritage and craftsmanship of Mozambique. It was filled with handmade crafts, jewelry, and artworks reflecting the local culture. Sheila was fascinated by the woven textiles, while Nelson admired the sculptures made from local materials. I picked up a few unique souvenirs, knowing that each item tells a story of the region's artistry. The vibrant colors and creative displays made it a feast for the senses.

The open-air seating allowed us to soak in the sun and sea breeze, creating a relaxing environment. We savored grilled fish, shrimp curry, and tropical fruit desserts. The kids enjoyed the signature seafood platter. Fatima and I appreciated the blend of rustic charm and modern touches in the decor. The location was perfect, just steps away from the shoreline, allowing us to take a short stroll along the beach after our meal.
As we sat there, watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean, I felt a deep sense of contentment. Sharing these experiences with my family, connecting them to my roots, is something I will always cherish. It's days like these that remind me why I wanted to come back to Mozambique in the first place.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Wild africa Mozambique and the Archipelago Resort. We'll also try out Dio's burger for lunch and Bazaruto Brewing Co for dinner. And maybe, just maybe, I'll sneak away for a quick drink at Mirador.
Today was a reminder of the simple joys of family, culture, and connection. I am grateful for every moment.
P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to find a travel adapter at Vila Art. It’s a small victory, but a necessary one!
