Seas the Day in Vilanculos
Today was a day of embracing the Mozambican coastal life, a blend of relaxation, adventure, and culinary delights. From setting sail on a traditional dhow to savoring fresh seafood by the beach, every moment was a vibrant celebration of this beautiful corner of the world. It's days like these that make me so grateful to share my heritage with my family.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Leopoldina's. It's a cozy spot, and the kids were excited to try some local pastries. Sheila, of course, went straight for the sweetest thing she could find, while Nelson, ever the curious one, wanted to know all about the different spices used in the dishes. It reminded me of my own childhood, exploring the flavors of Mozambique with my grandmother. After breakfast, we headed to Vilanculos Beach Lodge, where we had arranged to meet Sailaway Dhow Safaris.

The dhow was a sight to behold, its white sail billowing in the wind, promising a day of adventure. The family was buzzing with excitement as we climbed aboard. Fatima, ever cautious, made sure everyone had their sunscreen on, while I double-checked that we had all our essentials – camera, snorkeling gear, and of course, the Mozambican phrasebook. I didn't want to miss an opportunity to practice my Changana! The crew welcomed us warmly, and soon we were gliding across the turquoise waters towards the Bazaruto Archipelago.
As we sailed, the views were simply breathtaking. The islands rose majestically from the sea, their sandy beaches gleaming in the sunlight. Nelson was captivated by the dolphins playing in the waves, while Sheila was content to sit with Fatima, pointing out the different seabirds soaring overhead. I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride, sharing this stunning landscape with my family. It felt like coming home, even though I've built a life so far away in Edmonton.
Our first stop was Magaruque Island. The island is small enough to walk around in a couple of hours. We spent the afternoon snorkeling in the shallow reefs, marveling at the colorful fish and intricate coral formations. Nelson was particularly thrilled to spot an octopus, while Sheila was fascinated by the tiny clownfish darting in and out of their anemones. Even Fatima, who's usually a bit hesitant about getting in the water, couldn't resist the allure of the crystal-clear sea. I was so happy to see her relax and enjoy herself, away from the stresses of her work back in Canada.
The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
After our snorkeling adventure, the crew prepared a delicious lunch for us on board. Freshly grilled seafood, salads, and tropical fruits – it was a feast for the senses. We ate under the shade of the dhow's sail, the gentle sea breeze keeping us cool. It was the perfect moment, surrounded by family, good food, and the stunning beauty of Mozambique. I made sure to teach the kids a few words in Portuguese, pointing out the names of the different fish we were eating. They giggled at my accent, but I could see they were absorbing the culture, bit by bit.
As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we sailed back towards Vilanculos, the sky ablaze with color. The kids were tired but content, their faces flushed with sun and sea air. Fatima and I sat in comfortable silence, watching the coastline approach. It was a day of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys in life – family, nature, and good food.
Back on shore, we freshened up before heading out for dinner at Telvina Beach Lodge Restaurante e Acomodação. This spot came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is right on the beach, offering stunning views of the ocean. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, perfect for a family dinner. We started with some local appetizers, like rissóis and samosas, while we perused the menu. For mains, we opted for a seafood platter, a mix of grilled prawns, calamari, and fish. It was all incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the bounty of the Mozambican coast.

After dinner, Fatima and the kids headed back to our relatives' house to rest, while I decided to explore Vilanculos's nightlife a bit. I ventured to Insomnia, a local bar known for its vibrant atmosphere. The music was pumping, a mix of local beats and international hits. I sipped on a local beer, chatting with some fellow travelers and locals. It was a fun, lively scene, a great way to unwind after a long day. I even managed to pick up a few new Changana phrases from some of the locals, much to my amusement.

As I walked back to the house under the starlit sky, I reflected on the day. It was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. I felt a deep sense of connection to my homeland, a renewed appreciation for its beauty and its people. And I was filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Chibuene and Vila do Paraiso [If statement missing end bracket]. I'm excited to delve deeper into the history and culture of this region, and to continue making memories with my loved ones. Tonight, though, I'll sleep soundly, dreaming of dhows, dolphins, and the warm embrace of Mozambique.
Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Chibuene, known for its historical significance, and Vila do Paraiso, where we hope to relax and enjoy the scenery [Day 7 Itinerary]. I'm particularly excited about visiting Vila Art - Sergio, where I hope to find some unique souvenirs to take back to Edmonton [Day 7 Itinerary]. It's important to me that the kids have something tangible to remember this trip by, something that will remind them of their Mozambican heritage.
The FACIM Maputo International Trade Fair is set to take place later this month in Maputo. While we won't be able to attend this year, I'm hoping to bring the family next time we visit Mozambique. It would be a great opportunity for Nelson and Sheila to learn more about Mozambican businesses and industries.
As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today was a reminder of why I wanted to bring my family back to Mozambique in the first place - to reconnect with our roots, to experience the beauty of this land, and to create lasting memories together. And as I drift off to sleep, I know that tomorrow will bring even more adventures and discoveries.
