Immerse yourself in Coimbra's cultural heart, exploring museums and savoring local flavors, a perfect blend of history and gastronomy.
Museums and Memories in Coimbra
Today was a day dedicated to delving deeper into Coimbra’s rich cultural tapestry. I set out with a plan to explore some of the city’s renowned museums and, of course, to indulge in the local cuisine. It’s fascinating how each city has its own rhythm, and I was eager to sync with Coimbra’s.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Notes Bar & Kitchen. I had read some great reviews online, and it was close to my accommodation. The place had a cozy ambiance. I opted for a traditional Portuguese pastry and a strong coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. It reminded me of the breakfasts Fatima makes back home, though hers always have a touch of Mozambican spice that I miss. The staff were friendly, and the service was quick, setting a positive tone for the day.

First on my museum itinerary was the National Museum Machado de Castro. Named after the famous Portuguese sculptor, Joaquim Machado de Castro, the museum itself is housed in the former Bishop's Palace, a building that has seen centuries of history. As I wandered through the various exhibits, I was struck by the extensive collection of religious art and sculptures. The museum is built on the site of the ancient Roman forum of Aeminium, and you can even explore the Roman cryptoporticus beneath the palace. It’s a bit eerie but incredibly fascinating to walk through these ancient passageways and imagine what life was like here centuries ago. The sheer scale of the place was impressive, and I easily spent a few hours lost in the art and history.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
After immersing myself in history at the National Museum Machado de Castro, I decided to visit the Casa-Museu Miguel Torga. Miguel Torga is one of Portugal's most celebrated writers, and this house museum offers a glimpse into his life and work. The museum is located in a quiet residential area and is filled with Torga's personal belongings, manuscripts, and books. It felt like stepping into the personal space of a literary giant. As someone who appreciates literature and the power of words, I found it incredibly inspiring to see the environment where Torga created his masterpieces. It reminded me a little of my own small library back in Edmonton, filled with books from all over the world, including a special section dedicated to Mozambican writers.

My final museum visit of the day was to the Casa-Museu Bissaya Barreto. This museum is dedicated to the life and work of Fernando Bissaya Barreto, a physician and social reformer who made significant contributions to public health and social welfare in Portugal. The house itself is a beautiful example of early 20th-century architecture, and the exhibits showcase Barreto's work and achievements. It was interesting to learn about his innovative social programs and his dedication to improving the lives of the less fortunate. It made me think about Fatima's work as a registered nurse and the impact she has on her patients every day. It's inspiring to see people dedicating their lives to helping others.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurante Tasquinha da Saudade, a spot recommended by several locals. The restaurant had a cozy, traditional feel, and the menu featured classic Portuguese dishes. I opted for the bacalhau à brás, a codfish dish with scrambled eggs and potatoes. It was delicious and comforting, a perfect midday meal. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Dux Taberna Urbana. This restaurant had a more modern and sophisticated vibe, and the menu featured creative takes on traditional Portuguese cuisine. I started with the fried prawns in garlic, which were incredibly flavorful, and for my main course, I chose the pork tenderloin. The food was excellent, and the service was attentive. It was a great way to end a day of exploring Coimbra’s cultural and culinary offerings. I made sure to try some of the local wine, which was a delightful accompaniment to my meal. The atmosphere was lively, and it was clear that this place was popular with both locals and tourists.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I stopped by Noster Taberna & Wine Bar for a nightcap. This cozy wine bar had a great selection of Portuguese wines, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. I enjoyed a glass of red wine while chatting with some of the locals, learning more about the city and its history. It was the perfect way to wind down after a busy day.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Coimbra’s natural beauty, including the Ponte Pedonal Pedro e Inês and the Choupal National Forest. I’m looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this charming city. I am also keen to visit Miradouro do Penedo da Saudade to enjoy the views. Perhaps I'll even pick up a souvenir at Forum Coimbra. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel solo, the freedom to explore at my own pace and immerse myself in the local culture.
