A Fond Farewell

As my solo adventure in Coimbra draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past nine days. This final day was a perfect blend of exploration, relaxation, and cultural immersion, solidifying Coimbra's place in my heart. It's funny how a place can feel so familiar in such a short amount of time.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurante Dona Taska. It was a cozy spot, filled with locals, which is always a good sign. I savored a traditional Portuguese pastry and strong coffee, the perfect fuel for my last day of exploration. It reminded me of the simple pleasures of enjoying a good meal, just like Fatima makes back home.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed to the UC Exploratório - Centro de Ciência Viva da Universidade de Coimbra. What a fascinating place! It was the first interactive science center in Portugal, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The exhibits were engaging and informative, making complex scientific concepts accessible to everyone. I particularly enjoyed the exhibit about viruses; it was both educational and timely, given current global events. I even sent Fatima a message about it, knowing her work as a nurse would make her appreciate it even more. It's amazing how science can be both enlightening and entertaining, and it reminded me of how much Nelson loves his science classes.

Next on my itinerary was Parque da Cidade Manuel Braga, a green oasis in the heart of Coimbra. The park was designed in 1920 by the landscape architect Jacinto de Matos. As I strolled through the park, I admired the meticulously maintained gardens and the serene atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on my trip. I found a bench overlooking the Mondego River and simply watched the world go by. The air was crisp, and the sun was warm – a perfect combination. The park is named after Dr. Manuel Braga, and it’s a very popular place to relax and enjoy nature [https://www.cm-coimbra.pt/]. There's also a monument to him in the park. I thought about Fatima and the kids, imagining them running around and enjoying the open space. It made me miss them terribly, but also reinforced my gratitude for the opportunity to experience this adventure on my own.

After my relaxing interlude in the park, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Boutique dos Relógios. I've always appreciated fine craftsmanship, and the intricate timepieces on display were truly works of art. I didn't buy anything, but it was a pleasure to admire the skill and precision that went into each watch. It reminded me of my own work as an electrician, the satisfaction of creating something functional and beautiful with my hands. I thought about getting Nelson a watch for his next birthday, something to mark his passage into being a little older.

As the afternoon wore on, I made my way to Mirante Emygdio da Silva ou Emídio da Silva. The views from the top were simply breathtaking. From that vantage point, one can admire the Mondego River, and the village of Penacova [https://www.monumentos.pt/]. The mirante was built in the early 20th century, and was designed by the Venetian architect Nicolau Bigaglia. I took some photos, trying to capture the beauty of the landscape, but no image could truly do it justice. It was a moment of pure serenity, a perfect way to say goodbye to Coimbra. It was like standing on top of the world, contemplating the journey I had undertaken and the memories I would carry with me.

For my final dinner, I chose Restaurante Tapas nas Costas, recommended to me by a local I met earlier in the week. The restaurant is known for Portuguese cuisine. It turned out to be an excellent choice. The tapas were delicious, a flavorful explosion of Portuguese cuisine. I savored each bite, washing it down with a glass of local wine. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, a fitting end to my solo adventure. I thought of inviting Fatima to a tapas place back home, something to remind us of this trip.

As I sit here now, writing this final entry, I am filled with a sense of contentment and gratitude. Coimbra has been more than just a destination; it has been an experience that has enriched my soul. I've learned so much about Portuguese history and culture, and I've also learned a lot about myself. Traveling solo has pushed me out of my comfort zone, forcing me to rely on my own instincts and resourcefulness. It's been challenging at times, but also incredibly rewarding.

I'm looking forward to returning home to Fatima, Nelson, and Sheila. I have so many stories to share with them, so many memories to relive. I know they'll be eager to hear all about my adventures, and I can't wait to see their faces light up as I recount my experiences. I might even cook them a traditional Portuguese meal, sharing a taste of Coimbra with my family.

This trip has reminded me of the importance of taking time for myself, of stepping outside of my daily routine and embracing new experiences. It's also reinforced my appreciation for my family and the life we've built together. As much as I've enjoyed traveling solo, I know that my greatest adventures are yet to come, shared with the people I love most.

Tomorrow, I'll be heading back to Lisbon to catch my flight home to Edmonton. It's going to be a long journey, but I'm already looking forward to it. I'll have plenty of time to reflect on my trip and to plan my next adventure. Who knows where I'll go next? Maybe I'll bring Fatima and the kids along for the ride. Until then, Adeus, Coimbra. Thank you for the memories.

This solo trip to Coimbra has been an unforgettable experience, filled with history, culture, and personal growth. From exploring ancient universities to relaxing in serene parks, every moment has been a treasure. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have immersed myself in the beauty and charm of Portugal, and I look forward to sharing my stories with my family back home in Edmonton.
