A Fond Farewell

As my final day in Seydisfjordur draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey this solo trip has been. It's amazing how a place so remote can leave such a lasting impression. This morning, the air was crisp, carrying the scent of the sea and the promise of a day filled with exploration. I decided to make the most of it, knowing that tomorrow I’d be heading back to Reykjavik, and then onwards to Edmonton, and my family.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Við Lónið guesthouse. Fuelled up with Icelandic skyr and freshly baked bread, I set out to explore more of Seyðisfjörður itself. The town, nestled at the innermost point of a fjord in East Iceland, is a vibrant fishing town with an extensive history. I wandered through the colorful streets, taking in the unique architecture and the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The iconic Rainbow Street leading up to the blue church was as picturesque as ever, and I couldn't resist taking a few more photos.

One of the highlights of my morning was visiting Markadur. This charming shop is a treasure trove of local crafts and souvenirs, offering a glimpse into Icelandic culture. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The shop features a selection of handmade crafts, from knitted garments to traditional pottery. I found a beautiful hand-knitted wool scarf, perfect for Edmonton's chilly winters, and couldn't resist buying it as a gift for Fatima. Each product has a tag with the price and the name of the Icelander who knitted it. It felt good to support the local artisans and take home a piece of Iceland with me.

After Markadur, I decided to immerse myself in the local history at the East Iceland Heritage Museum. The museum is relatively small, making it great for children as it is not so large as to lose their attention. It offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's past, with exhibits showcasing Icelandic culture and a separate section on reindeer, which are unique to East Iceland. I particularly enjoyed the collection of carved antler objects and learning about the natural history of reindeer and their role in the region. It’s incredible to see how the community has preserved its heritage, especially after the tragic landslides in 2020. The staff were accommodating when tourists stop in.

It is not down on any map; true places never are.

For lunch, I treated myself to a meal at Hótel Snæfell. The hotel offers cozy accommodations amidst stunning landscapes. The food was delicious, and the views were simply breathtaking. It was the perfect spot to relax and reflect on my journey.

In the afternoon, I decided to take a short hike to Tvísöngur, an art piece above the village. This sound sculpture consists of five interconnected concrete domes that resonate with harmonic tones when the wind blows through them. The hike was invigorating, and the views from the top were spectacular. It was a truly unique and peaceful experience.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Norð Austur - Sushi & Bar for a farewell dinner. This restaurant is renowned for its delicious sushi and has been named the best sushi restaurant in the country. The restaurant uses only the freshest ingredients available, with the fish being caught locally by fishermen in the fjords. With respect for the raw materials and Japanese traditions, Norð Austur serves modern sushi alongside tasty beverages. I savored every bite, knowing that it would be one of the last tastes of Iceland I would have for a while.

Walking back to my guesthouse after dinner, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Seydisfjordur had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and tranquil solitude. It's a place I know I'll never forget, and I hope to return someday with Fatima and the kids to share its magic with them.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to return home and share my stories with my family. I've already started planning a traditional Mozambican feast to celebrate my return, complete with piri-piri chicken and matapa. I know Nelson and Sheila will be thrilled to hear all about my adventures, and Fatima will be eager to see the photos and hear about the local crafts I discovered.

As I pack my bags tonight, I’m filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. This solo journey through Seydisfjordur has been more than just a vacation; it's been a transformative experience that has deepened my appreciation for the world and my place in it. Until next time, Iceland, takk fyrir!

Tomorrow marks the end of my trip, as I head back to Reykjavik and prepare for my flight home. While there aren't any specific itinerary items for tomorrow, I plan to savor my last moments in Iceland, perhaps with a final stroll through Reykjavik before heading to the airport.

Seydisfjordur, with its colorful houses, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural scene, has truly captured my heart. It's a place where you can disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature and yourself. As I prepare to leave this enchanting town, I know that I'll carry its memories with me always, inspiring me to seek out new adventures and embrace the beauty of the world around me.
