Journey back in time as we explore the majestic Acrocorinth and delve into the treasures of the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth.
A Day Immersed in History
Today, Elke and I embarked on a journey back in time, exploring the ancient wonders just a short drive from our delightful stay in Amfitriti Palazzo. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and a deep appreciation for the layers of history that have shaped this region of Greece. We set out with a sense of anticipation, eager to uncover the stories etched into the stones of Acrocorinth and the artifacts housed in the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Zournal. The reviews I had read online were spot on; the atmosphere was calm and inviting. I savored a perfectly prepared Greek salad and fried cheese while Elke enjoyed her falafel wrap. Fuelled and ready, we set off towards Acrocorinth.

Ascending to Acrocorinth
The drive to Acrocorinth was scenic, with glimpses of the surrounding countryside. As we approached, the monolithic rock loomed large, a testament to its strategic importance throughout history. I could only imagine how many feet have walked the same path we were about to take. The climb was invigorating, and the panoramic views from the top were nothing short of breathtaking. From this vantage point, it's easy to see why Acrocorinth was known as the All-seeing and Keeper of Keys of Peloponnese.
The fortress itself is a fascinating blend of architectural styles, reflecting the various civilizations that have occupied it over the centuries. We explored the remains of temples, churches, and mosques, each layer telling a different chapter of Acrocorinth's story. I was particularly struck by the sheer scale of the fortifications and the ingenuity of the ancient engineers who designed them. The Venetians certainly left their mark, and it was interesting to learn about the various sieges and battles that this fortress had withstood. Elke was especially fascinated by the Temple of Aphrodite, imagining the rituals that once took place there.
To truly appreciate the present, one must understand the echoes of the past that resonate within it.
It was fascinating to imagine the lives of those who once walked these grounds, from the ancient Greeks to the Romans, Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans. Each civilization left its mark on this imposing rock, creating a rich tapestry of history and culture. I made sure to capture as many photographs as possible, hoping to convey the grandeur and historical significance of this incredible site.
Delving into the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth
After descending from Acrocorinth, we drove to the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth. I was eager to see the artifacts unearthed from the surrounding area and to learn more about the daily lives of the people who once inhabited this ancient city. The museum is well-organized, with exhibits spanning from the prehistoric period to the Byzantine era. Elke, with her librarian's eye, appreciated the meticulous curation of the displays.

The museum houses an impressive collection of sculptures, ceramics, and mosaics, each telling a story of Corinth's rich past. I was particularly drawn to the Roman-era exhibits, with their intricate mosaics and well-preserved statues. Elke was fascinated by the Byzantine glazed plates, imagining the vibrant colors and scenes they once depicted. The twin Kouroi statues, recently added to the museum's collection, were also a highlight, their archaic smiles hinting at the artistic achievements of ancient Greece.
One of the most striking exhibits was the collection of artifacts from the Asklepieion, the healing sanctuary. The clay offerings shaped as human body parts offered a poignant glimpse into the hopes and fears of those seeking healing in ancient times. I found myself reflecting on the enduring human desire for health and well-being, a desire that transcends time and culture.
A Culinary Pause
For lunch, we decided to try Number One: All Day Food. I opted for a traditional moussaka. Elke enjoyed a club sandwich. It was a delightful interlude, and we felt refreshed and ready for more exploration.

A Soapy Interlude
In the afternoon, we sought out the Naias Soap Workshop, a small shop I had read about that produces handmade soaps using natural ingredients. We found the shop tucked away on a quiet street, its entrance filled with the fragrant aromas of olive oil, herbs, and essential oils. The owner greeted us warmly, explaining the soap-making process and the benefits of using natural ingredients. Elke, always conscious of using environmentally friendly products, was particularly interested in the workshop's commitment to sustainability. We purchased a few bars of soap, each infused with local herbs and scents, as souvenirs for our friends back home.

We arrived just in time to watch the sunset, the sky ablaze with vibrant colors. The setting was romantic and serene, the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Alaloum is known for its traditional Greek cuisine with a modern twist, and we were not disappointed. I savored the grilled seafood, while Elke enjoyed a vegetarian dish made with local vegetables. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, the ingredients sourced from nearby farms and fishermen. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable. As we dined, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the rich history and culture of this beautiful region.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Corinth Canal and the Isthmus of Corinth, further exploring the engineering marvels and strategic importance of this region. We'll have breakfast at To Omorfo Tavernaki, lunch at Wild Duck, and dinner at Taverna Vyzantio. I am also looking forward to visiting Blublanc.
