A Fond Farewell to Nafplio

As our tranquil escape to Nafplio draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the past week with a sense of profound contentment. This journey with Elke has been more than just a vacation; it has been an immersion into the heart of Greek history, culture, and culinary artistry. Today, our final day, was a fitting culmination of all that we've experienced, filled with historical exploration and gastronomic pleasures.

Our day began, as many others had, with a delightful breakfast at To Omorfo Tavernaki. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of authentic Greek flavors made it the perfect spot to start our day. I savored the local delicacies, the taste of fresh ingredients a testament to the region's rich agricultural heritage. It's these simple, authentic experiences that I cherish most, a reminder of the beauty found in everyday moments. It reminded me of our favorite Gasthaus back home, where the food is simple, honest, and made with love.

After breakfast, we set off towards the Corinth Canal, a site I had long anticipated visiting. The drive itself was a scenic journey, with the Greek countryside unfolding before us in all its splendor. Olive groves, vineyards, and the distant shimmer of the sea created a tapestry of natural beauty. As we approached the canal, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer feat of engineering that stood before us.

The Isthmus of Corinth, a narrow waterway cutting through the Isthmus of Corinth, connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf. Its history stretches back to ancient times, with the initial concept proposed by Periander in the 7th century BC. Though his vision was never realized in his time, the idea persisted through the centuries, with various rulers and empires considering its construction. It was finally completed in 1893, a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. Standing at its edge, I imagined the countless ships that had traversed this passage, shortening their journey and avoiding the treacherous voyage around the Peloponnese peninsula.

To witness the Corinth Canal is to stand at the crossroads of history and engineering, marveling at the ambition and ingenuity of those who dared to connect two seas.

The Isthmus of Corinth itself is a place of immense historical and strategic importance. For centuries, it served as a vital link between the Peloponnese and mainland Greece, a hub of trade, and a site of military significance. Ancient Corinth, located nearby, was a powerful city-state, its prosperity fueled by its strategic location. The Isthmian Games, one of the major athletic festivals of ancient Greece, were held here, honoring the god Poseidon. As I stood there, I could almost hear the echoes of the past, the sounds of bustling markets, the cheers of athletic contests, and the clash of armies.

After exploring the Corinth Canal and the Isthmus, we drove back to Nafplio for lunch. We chose Wild Duck, a restaurant known for its innovative cuisine and elegant ambiance. The reviews I had read spoke highly of its unique outdoor patio and impeccable service, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. The meal was nothing short of exceptional. The chef's creative use of local ingredients, combined with international flavors, resulted in a culinary experience that was both sophisticated and comforting. Elke and I shared several dishes, each one a testament to the chef's skill and passion. It was a fitting celebration of our final day in Nafplio, a gastronomic delight that perfectly complemented the historical and cultural richness of our trip.

As the afternoon waned, we sought out a place to unwind and reflect on our journey. Blublanc, a bar recommended for its seaside relaxation and stunning views, beckoned us. Perched on Arvanitias Beach, it offered a vibrant yet laid-back atmosphere, the perfect setting to soak in the last rays of the Greek sun. We sipped on refreshing cocktails, the gentle sea breeze caressing our faces, and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant hues. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect encapsulation of the tranquility and beauty that Nafplio had offered us.

For dinner, we chose Taverna Vyzantio, enticed by its reputation for traditional Greek cuisine and charming atmosphere. The taverna's rustic ambiance, inspired by Byzantine decor, created a warm and inviting setting. The menu featured a variety of classic Greek dishes, prepared with locally sourced ingredients. We savored the flavors of moussaka, grilled meats, and fresh seafood, each bite a reminder of the culinary traditions that have shaped this region for centuries. The staff was warm and welcoming, adding to the overall charm of the experience. It felt like stepping back in time, a glimpse into the heart of Greek hospitality.

As we sat there, enjoying our meal, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared over the past week. Nafplio had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Elke and I had explored ancient ruins, strolled along picturesque streets, and savored the flavors of Greek cuisine. We had immersed ourselves in the local culture, connecting with the people and traditions that make this region so unique. It was a journey that had enriched our lives, creating memories that we would cherish for years to come.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home, carrying with us the spirit of Nafplio and the warmth of Greek hospitality. While I am eager to return to Heidelberg and resume my work restoring antique furniture, a part of me will forever remain in this enchanting corner of Greece. I look forward to sharing my experiences with my readers, hoping to inspire them to embark on their own tranquil escapes and discover the beauty that awaits in unexpected corners of the world.

As I played a few notes on my zither before bed, I thought about the places we visited and the people we met. It reminded me of a quote from Nikos Kazantzakis:

In order to see clearly, perhaps it is advisable to look at the heavens, which are reflected in the sea.

Goodnight, from Nafplio. It's been a pleasure.
