Exploring the Enchanting Landscapes of Goreme, Turkey
Day 7: Delving into Goreme's Ancient Churches: A Day of Art and History
Explore Goreme's historic churches, from St. Jean to the Dark Church, and discover handmade treasures at local shops with the family.
Echoes of the Past in Goreme's Churches
Today, Elke, Maximilian and I immersed ourselves in the rich history and artistry of Goreme's cave churches. It was a day of exploration, contemplation, and appreciation for the enduring legacy of Byzantine art. The intricate frescoes and unique architecture transported us back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of those who once inhabited this remarkable landscape.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Soffy's Kitchen. The charming cave-like setting and the aroma of Turkish coffee set the perfect tone for the day. I opted for a traditional Turkish breakfast, while Elke enjoyed a vegetarian casserole. Maximilian, ever the adventurous one, tried the *menemen*, a delicious tomato and pepper scramble. It was a delightful start, fueling us for the day's explorations. I made a mental note to try and recreate the casserole back in Heidelberg, perhaps with some fresh Odenwald mushrooms.

Our first stop was St. Jean Church. This two-story church, dating back to the 13th century, is located at the entrance of Gülşehir district. The lower floor, once used as a wine cellar and burial chamber, gave us a glimpse into the practical aspects of monastic life. Ascending to the upper floor, we were immediately struck by the vibrant frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible. The Last Judgment scene, a rarity in Cappadocia, was particularly impressive, with its detailed depiction of the righteous and the sinners. The artistry and symbolism were truly captivating. I found myself pondering the lives of the artists who painstakingly created these masterpieces centuries ago.

To walk through these ancient spaces is to feel the weight of history and the enduring power of human creativity.
Next on our itinerary was the Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise), located within the Goreme Open Air Museum. The name comes from the fact that very little light enters the interior through a small skylight. This lack of light, however, has helped preserve the vibrant colors of the frescoes, making it one of the best-preserved Byzantine monuments in Cappadocia. Built in the 11th century, this cross-in-square monastic church features a stunning array of frescoes depicting scenes from the New Testament. We gazed in awe at the depictions of Christ Pantocrator, the Nativity, the Crucifixion, and the Last Supper. The level of detail and the vividness of the colors were simply breathtaking. It was remarkable to think that these artworks had survived for nearly a thousand years, hidden away in the darkness. I tried to imagine what it must have been like for the Christians who sought refuge here, their faith illuminated by these very images.

After immersing ourselves in the spiritual and artistic wonders of the Dark Church, our appetites called, and we made our way to Viewpoint Cafe and Restaurant for lunch. As the name suggests, the restaurant boasts extraordinary views of the Cappadocian landscape. While some reviews mention mixed experiences with the food, we found our lunch to be quite enjoyable. Elke and I shared a traditional Turkish *manti* (dumplings), while Maximilian opted for a *pide* (Turkish pizza). The stunning scenery certainly enhanced the dining experience. As we ate, we discussed the history we had absorbed that morning, the rise and fall of empires, and the enduring power of faith and art.

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge in some local shopping. We stumbled upon YASTIKS - Handmade Cushions & Authentic Souvenir. The shop was a treasure trove of unique, handcrafted items, from colorful cushions to intricate carpets. The owner, Faruk, was incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about the origins of his materials and the craftsmanship behind each piece. Elke, with her keen eye for design, was particularly drawn to the vibrant cushions made from vintage *kilims*. We ended up purchasing a few small souvenirs, including a beautifully embroidered cushion cover for our living room in Heidelberg. It will serve as a reminder of our time in Cappadocia.

As evening approached, we found ourselves at Namaste India for dinner. It might seem odd to have Indian food in Turkey, but we had heard good things about this restaurant, and Maximilian was particularly keen for something different. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with Bollywood posters adorning the walls. We ordered a variety of dishes, including butter chicken, *dal makhani*, and *biryani*. The food was flavorful and satisfying, a welcome change from the traditional Turkish cuisine we had been enjoying. It was a delightful end to a day filled with history, art, and cultural immersion.

Tomorrow, we have an early start planned for a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia. I'm particularly excited about this, as I have heard it's an unforgettable experience. Later in the day, we plan to visit Ortahisar Castle, another of Cappadocia's iconic landmarks. And in the evening, we will treat ourselves to drinks at the Kaira Rooftop Bar & Restaurant. I am eager to see Cappadocia from above and below, and to soak in the atmosphere of this magical place.
As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a unique and fascinating place. Goreme's cave churches are a testament to the enduring power of faith, art, and human ingenuity. And I am so glad to be sharing this journey with my family. It is experiences like these that make travel so enriching and rewarding. I am already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.
