Valley Views and Culinary Caves

Today was a day of exploration and sensory delights here in Göreme. After several days of settling in, I felt a strong urge to really immerse myself in the natural beauty of Cappadocia, and Elke was just as eager. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, was keen to ensure we also experienced the local culture, so we struck a balance between nature and commerce.

Our day began, as many do here, with a hearty breakfast at Old Cappadocia. The charming cafe, with its rustic decor, was just the place to fuel up for a day of hiking. I savored a traditional Turkish breakfast platter, complete with fresh bread, olives, cheeses, and a strong cup of Turkish coffee. Elke enjoyed a lighter meal of yogurt and fruit, while Maximilian opted for a hearty lamb kebab. It’s fascinating how each meal here feels like a small celebration of local flavors. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes back in Heidelberg; Elke, ever the librarian, was already thinking about sourcing a good Turkish cookbook.

With our appetites sated, we set off for the Rose Valley, a location I had been particularly eager to visit. The morning air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wild herbs and distant earth. The sun was already beginning its ascent, casting a warm, golden glow on the unique rock formations that define this region. I made sure to pack my camera, of course, as I knew the views would be nothing short of spectacular. I also secretly packed the binoculars I had forgotten from my list of essentials, knowing that the views would be even better with them.

The hike through Rose Valley was nothing short of breathtaking. The landscape unfolded before us in a panorama of pink-hued cliffs and fairy chimneys, sculpted by centuries of wind and water. The trails were well-worn but uneven, a testament to the countless travelers who have come to witness this natural wonder. As we walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale and beauty of the place. Elke, always the thoughtful one, pointed out various rock formations that resembled animals or familiar objects, turning the hike into a delightful game of observation. Maximilian, meanwhile, was busy capturing the scenery with his modern camera, his youthful energy a stark contrast to the ancient landscape.

The beauty of Cappadocia lies not just in its landscapes, but in the way it connects you to centuries of history and culture.

We spent several hours exploring the valley, stopping frequently to take photographs and simply soak in the atmosphere. The silence was broken only by the occasional chirping of birds and the soft rustling of leaves. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, a chance to reconnect with nature and appreciate the simple things. I felt a sense of peace wash over me, a feeling I hadn't experienced in quite some time. I think the family felt it too, and it was in that moment that I truly understood why I had been drawn to Turkey in the first place.

By midday, our stomachs were beginning to rumble again, so we made our way to Fat Boys for lunch. This cozy restaurant, known for its hearty portions and rustic charm, was the perfect place to refuel after our hike. I opted for a lentil burger, while Elke chose a traditional Turkish pide, a sort of pizza. Maximilian, predictably, went for a lamb kebab, declaring it the best he had tasted so far. The food was delicious and satisfying, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It felt like we were dining in someone's home, surrounded by friends and family.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. Maximilian had expressed an interest in purchasing a Turkish rug, a souvenir that would not only remind him of our trip but also serve as a unique addition to his new apartment. So, we headed to Cappadocia Rug Collection, a local shop known for its exquisite selection of handmade rugs.

The shop was a treasure trove of colors and patterns, each rug telling a story of the region's rich history and artistry. We spent hours browsing the collection, admiring the intricate designs and learning about the different weaving techniques. The shop owner, a kind and knowledgeable man, shared stories about the origins of each rug, explaining the symbolism behind the various motifs. Maximilian was particularly drawn to a rug with a geometric pattern, its earthy tones reflecting the colors of the Cappadocian landscape. After much deliberation, he made his purchase, beaming with pride at his newfound treasure. I must admit, I was tempted to buy one myself, but I resisted, knowing that our Heidelberg home was already filled with enough antique furniture. However, I did purchase a small kilim as a memento of our time here.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to Red Valley Park, determined to witness the sunset from this vantage point. The park was already bustling with activity, as other travelers gathered to watch the spectacle unfold. We found a spot overlooking the valley and settled in to wait. The sun began its descent, casting a warm, golden glow on the landscape. The rock formations seemed to ignite with color, their pink and orange hues deepening as the sun dipped lower in the sky. It was a breathtaking sight, a moment of pure magic that I will never forget.

As darkness fell, we made our way to the Wooden Spoon Cave Restaurant for dinner. This unique dining establishment, set within a cave, offered an unforgettable culinary experience. The ambiance was warm and inviting, the soft lighting casting a romantic glow on the ancient rock walls. The menu featured traditional Turkish dishes, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. I ordered a pottery kebab, a local specialty, while Elke opted for a vegetarian mezze platter. Maximilian, ever adventurous, chose a chicken shish kebab, declaring it the best he had ever tasted. The food was delicious, the service impeccable, and the atmosphere simply magical.

The Wooden Spoon Cave Restaurant certainly lived up to its reputation. The meal was a delightful symphony of flavors, each dish a testament to the region's rich culinary heritage. The cave setting added an element of mystique, transporting us back in time to a simpler, more authentic way of life. It was the perfect end to a perfect day, a celebration of the senses that left us feeling content and fulfilled.

As we walked back to our Kookaburra Pension, the stars twinkled above us, their light illuminating the surreal landscape. I reflected on the day's events, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique corner of the world with my family. Cappadocia had exceeded all my expectations, captivating me with its natural beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. I knew that this was a place I would never forget, a place that would forever hold a special place in my heart. And I know that Elke and Maximilian feel the same.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, a journey into the depths of Cappadocia's fascinating past. I am eager to uncover the secrets of these ancient civilizations, to learn more about the people who carved these subterranean dwellings out of the rock. I am also looking forward to unwinding at the Henna Hotel Rooftop Bar, a place I hear offers stunning views of the Göreme. It promises to be another day of adventure and discovery, a chance to delve deeper into the heart of this enchanting region. And hopefully I can try the local Cappadocian wine.
