A Day of Ducal Grandeur
Today, Elke and I plunged headfirst into the heart of Parma's rich history and vibrant culture. As a restorer of antique furniture, I'm always eager to explore the craftsmanship and artistry of bygone eras, and Parma certainly didn't disappoint. With the warm June sun shining, we set out to discover the treasures this city holds, and to enjoy the local cuisine.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Osteria dei Servi. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, and we enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of local pastries and cappuccino. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

Exploring Palazzo della Pilotta
Our first stop was the magnificent Palazzo della Pilotta. This immense complex, conceived as a center for the court's services, is a testament to the power and vision of the Farnese family. Construction began in the late 16th century, but it was never fully completed, resulting in a fascinating mix of architectural styles and unfinished spaces. As we wandered through the courtyards, I couldn't help but imagine the bustling life of the court centuries ago. The sheer scale of the building is impressive, and I was particularly struck by the monumental scissor staircase, a masterpiece of engineering. Elke, with her librarian's eye for detail, was captivated by the Palatine Library, housed within the Palazzo. Though we didn't have time to explore it fully today, it's definitely on our list for a future visit.

A Stroll Through Parco Ducale
Next, we sought respite in the Parco Ducale. This historic park, originally established in the 16th century, offered a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The lush greenery, shaded pathways, and elegant fountains created a serene atmosphere. We strolled hand-in-hand, admiring the statues and the meticulously manicured gardens. The Palazzo del Giardino, located within the park, was a sight to behold, its Baroque architecture a reminder of Parma's rich heritage. I paused to sketch some of the architectural details in my notebook, while Elke enjoyed watching children play near the pond. It was a perfect interlude, allowing us to recharge before our next adventure. I made a mental note to bring a book and relax here a bit longer during our stay.

Art at the Galleria Nazionale
Our afternoon was dedicated to art at the Galleria Nazionale di Parma. Housed within the Palazzo della Pilotta, this gallery boasts an impressive collection of works from the Ducale Accademia di Belle Arti. As a furniture restorer, I am always drawn to the details in paintings, the way the artists captured light and texture. We were particularly impressed by the works of Correggio and Parmigianino, local artists who truly mastered their craft. Leonardo da Vinci's *La Scapigliata* was another highlight, its delicate beauty leaving us in awe. The gallery itself is a work of art, with its elegant halls and thoughtfully curated displays. Elke was thrilled to see the *Madonna and Child* by Fra Angelico, one of her favorite artists. We spent hours wandering through the gallery, immersing ourselves in the world of art and history.

Lunch at Antica Osteria della Ghiaia
By now, our stomachs were rumbling, so we made our way to Antica Osteria della Ghiaia for lunch. This charming osteria is known for its traditional Parmigiano cuisine, and it did not disappoint. We shared a plate of *anolini in brodo*, a local pasta dish, and savored every bite. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff made us feel right at home. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after a busy morning of sightseeing.

Dinner at Parizzi
As evening approached, we prepared for a special culinary experience at Parizzi. This Michelin-starred restaurant promised a sophisticated take on traditional Italian cuisine. Marco Parizzi, the chef, is known for his dedication to local ingredients and innovative techniques. The restaurant itself was elegant and refined, creating a perfect ambiance for a memorable meal. We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a variety of dishes showcasing the best of Parma's culinary offerings. From the delicate pasta to the perfectly cooked meat, each course was a masterpiece. Elke particularly enjoyed the wine pairings, expertly selected to complement each dish. It was an unforgettable dining experience, a true celebration of Italian gastronomy.

A Nightcap at J. Roger Speakeasy
To conclude our day, we ventured to J. Roger Speakeasy. This hidden bar, reminiscent of the Prohibition era, offered a unique and atmospheric setting for a nightcap. The dim lighting, jazz music, and vintage décor transported us back in time. We ordered handcrafted cocktails, expertly prepared by the bartenders. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our day of exploration. As we sipped our drinks, we chatted about our favorite moments and planned our adventures for tomorrow. It's always a joy to discover hidden gems like this, and J. Roger Speakeasy definitely left a lasting impression.
