Day 3: A Day of Culture and Culinary Delights in Parma
Discover Parma's soul through violins, botanical wonders, and Toscanini's legacy, complemented by exquisite local cuisine. A cultural journey.
Harmonies in Parma: Violins, Gardens, and Maestros
Today was a day dedicated to immersing ourselves in the cultural heart of Parma. We started with the delicate craftsmanship of violins, wandered through a tranquil botanical garden, and paid homage to a musical genius. It’s days like these that remind me why Elke and I cherish these journeys, allowing us to connect with the soul of a city.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Officina Alimentare Dedicata Parma. It’s a cozy spot, run by women, known for its dedication to local produce and traditional Emilian flavors. We savored some strong Italian coffee and a selection of regional cheeses and salumi, the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and it was clear that this place is a favorite among locals.
From there, we ventured to the Museo del Violino. Though technically located in Cremona, the heart of violin making, the museum's exhibits resonated deeply with my appreciation for craftsmanship. As a restorer of antique furniture, I am always in awe of the skill and artistry that goes into creating objects of beauty, and the violins on display were no exception. The museum houses an impressive collection of instruments, including several Stradivarius violins, and the exhibits detail the history and techniques of violin making. The acoustics of the auditorium were wonderful, making the experience even more captivating.

The Museo del Violino is not just a display of instruments; it is a celebration of human ingenuity and artistic expression.
After the Museo del Violino, we sought a change of pace at the Orto Botanico. This botanical garden, maintained by the University of Parma, offered a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. We strolled through the well-maintained gardens, admiring the diverse collection of plant species from around the world. The air was filled with the scent of flowers, and the serene pathways invited leisurely reflection. It was a perfect spot to unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature, a welcome contrast to the city's architectural grandeur. I made sure to take some photographs, capturing the vibrant colors and unique textures of the flora. Elke, ever the librarian, was particularly interested in the medicinal and aromatic plants, noting their historical uses and properties.

Our cultural journey continued with a visit to the Birthplace of Arturo Toscanini Museum. As a lover of classical music, I have long admired Toscanini's genius, and it was a privilege to stand in the house where he was born. The museum offered a glimpse into his life and career, showcasing relics and records from his travels and collaborations. It was fascinating to learn about his early years in Parma and his rise to international fame. The museum is located in the Oltretorrente district, in the house where the maestro was born in 1867.

After a morning filled with cultural enrichment, our appetites were calling, leading us to Risotteria dai C'andema PARMA for lunch. This restaurant specializes in risotto, and we were eager to sample their creations. We shared a couple of different risottos, each bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The service was fast and friendly, and the prices were reasonable. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Parma.

In the afternoon, Elke expressed a desire to do some shopping, so we headed to La Voglio Cosi - Borse e Vintage di Lusso. This vintage shop specializes in luxury handbags and accessories. While I am not particularly interested in fashion, I appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship of these items, and it was fun to browse the selection with Elke. She ended up purchasing a beautiful vintage handbag, a testament to her impeccable taste. The shop assistant, Sole, was very helpful and knowledgeable, making the experience even more enjoyable.

As evening approached, we made our way to Trattoria Del Tribunale for dinner. This traditional trattoria is located in the heart of Parma's historic center, and it is known for its classic pasta dishes and charcuterie. We started with a selection of local salumi, including the famous Parma ham, and then indulged in some homemade pasta dishes. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural and culinary exploration.

Tonight, as I reflect on our day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Parma. It is a city that truly nourishes the soul, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings.
Tomorrow, we plan to venture outside Parma to explore the Castello di Torrechiara, the Labirinto della Masone, and the Rocca Sanvitale. We’ll also be dining at Ristorante Angiol d'Or for breakfast, Ristorante Meltemi for lunch, and Osteria del Teatro for dinner, and perhaps enjoy a glass of wine at Peter Pan wine bar. I am particularly excited to visit the Labirinto della Masone, the world's largest maze, a testament to human creativity and ingenuity. Until then, buona notte from Parma!
It seems Simona Molinari is playing at Casa della Musica tonight, but I think I'll pass and just enjoy the quiet of the hotel.
