Discover Parma's architectural wonders and culinary delights on a captivating Sunday journey with Johann and Elke Gruber.
A Day of Ducal Grandeur and Culinary Charms
Today, Elke and I immersed ourselves in the heart of Parma, exploring its magnificent palaces and savoring its renowned cuisine. It was a day filled with historical discoveries and delightful gastronomic experiences, painting a vivid picture of Parma's rich cultural tapestry.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Porta Santa Croce. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. The restaurant exuded a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the service was impeccable. We enjoyed a selection of local cheeses, cured meats, and crusty bread, fueling up for our adventures ahead. It's always a pleasure to start the day with a taste of the local flavors, and Porta Santa Croce certainly delivered.

With renewed energy, we set out to explore the Palazzo Ducale di Parma. As a restorer of antique furniture, I was particularly eager to examine the palace's architecture and design. The Palazzo Ducale, also known as the Garden Palace, has a rich history, dating back to 1561 when Duke Ottavio Farnese commissioned its construction. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous renovations and expansions, reflecting the changing tastes and ambitions of its occupants. The palace now serves as the headquarters of the Italian Carabinieri. Unfortunately, we could not view the inside as it is a Carabinieri base, but we admired the external architecture and gardens.
Exploring Parma is like stepping back in time, each building and cobblestone whispering stories of centuries past.

Next on our itinerary was the Palazzo del Grano. This historic building, located in Piazza Garibaldi, has served various purposes throughout its existence. Originally constructed in 1627, it was designed by Giovanni Battista Magnani in the late Renaissance style. The Palazzo del Grano, also known as the Palazzo del Comune, stands on the southeast corner of Piazza Garibaldi. Its porticos, called the Voltoni del Grano, once housed the city's grain market until 1908. Today, the Palazzo del Grano serves as the seat of the Municipality. As we admired the architecture, we observed locals going about their day, a vivid reminder that history is not just about the past but also about the present.

Our historical journey continued as we sought out the Rovine della Chiesa di San Pietro trasformata in fontana. This unique site, the ruins of the Church of San Pietro, transformed into a fountain, offered a poignant reminder of Parma's layered past. The church, dating back to the 13th century, was demolished in 1813, but its remains were repurposed into a fountain, creating a serene and contemplative space. As I stood there, I reflected on the passage of time and the enduring power of art and architecture to transcend generations.

For lunch, we chose Il Trovatore Ristorante, a charming eatery known for its seafood. Elke and I shared a plate of freshly made pasta with seafood, savoring the flavors of the sea. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance, with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to recharge before continuing our exploration of Parma.

In the late afternoon, we decided to indulge in a pre-dinner drink at Piano A Drink & Kitchen. This stylish bar offered an extensive selection of cocktails and wines, as well as a menu of light bites. We sat at the bar, sipping on Aperol spritzes and watching the world go by. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, and the bartenders were skilled and engaging. It was a delightful way to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

As evening approached, we made our way to Osteria La Gatta Matta for dinner. This traditional osteria is known for its authentic Parmesan cuisine and warm, welcoming atmosphere. We started with a selection of local cured meats and cheeses, followed by handmade pasta dishes. For our main courses, Elke chose the veal cheek, while I opted for the roasted rabbit. The food was hearty and flavorful, and the service was attentive and friendly. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Parma. I was tempted by the Fois gras with pan brioche, gelato with spices, peaches in orange sauce and fresh blueberries.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Parma has to offer. From its magnificent palaces to its hidden gems and culinary delights, the city is a feast for the senses. Elke and I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience its rich history and culture firsthand. As we strolled back to our hotel, hand in hand, we already began planning our adventures for tomorrow. We are planning to visit Camera di San Paolo e Cella di Santa Caterina, San Giovanni Evangelista and Museo del Culatello.
Tomorrow promises more exploration, with visits to the Camera di San Paolo, San Giovanni Evangelista, and the Museo del Culatello. I am particularly excited about the Museo del Culatello, as I am eager to learn more about this prized local delicacy. Elke, with her librarian's curiosity, is looking forward to delving into the art and history of the Camera di San Paolo and San Giovanni Evangelista.
The air in Parma is so fresh, a welcome change from Heidelberg. I must remember to buy some postcards for Maximilian. He would have loved the architecture, I am sure. He always had an eye for detail, much like myself. Perhaps one day he will join us on our travels. Until then, Elke and I will continue to explore and share our experiences with you all.
